Guest in town Mikey Posted January 10, 2006 Posted January 10, 2006 Oh yeah! Forgot to mention, Mark Riley, alias Matt Bianco. He was more into your jazz funk than Northern. Hitched back from Yate to High Wycombe one Sunday morning with him. Prior to Matt Bianco, he was in Blue Rondo A La Turk with Tony Gordon - well known character on the scene and superb dancer (is he still around?). I met him at Hinkley, at one of the live shows in the Leisure Centre. He said he was inone of those bands, and was ever so slightly miffed I hadnt heard of them. But he understood that I only listened to Northern Soul and laughed it off.
Guest Polyvelts Posted January 10, 2006 Posted January 10, 2006 Every second girl at Notts Palais with a blonde wedge looked like Jane Torville and I'm not sure if TV Executives count as celebrities - even if they are The Man who fell to Perth ! Someone told me that Kenny 'Settle down now' Goodwin used to go to the Wheel. I'm not sure if I imagined it but I'm sure I once saw Duncan 'Chase Me' Norvell at the Brit once - he was there with Sue Pollard who did some incredible spins if I remember right.

Was that Mark or Tony you met there?

Markw Posted January 10, 2006 Posted January 10, 2006 I cant remember. The one who's band did a funky song called something like Glakto vee sisteen? (At least Thats the words i heard) That was Blue Rondo. Both Mark Riley and Tony Gordon were in them. Just Googled the band and they came up on some mp3 download site (none of their tracks available though). I'd forgotten that Tony Gordon performed under the stage name Moses Mount Bassie! Also forgot they did a cover of I Spy For The FBI which I'm sure I saw them do on telly, the Tube I think. Anyroad, you can find Tony Gordon's comments about the Northern scene in the back of Russ Winstanley and Dave Nowell's Soul Survivors book about the Casino.
leev Posted January 10, 2006 Posted January 10, 2006 Nice one Mike! Was that Mark or Tony you met there? " i stop and wonder what it means, clacto ve sistein, ooh ooh ah mmmm ooh ah" great bit of mid 80s u.k. pop dance....i'll get me coat

Soulsmith Posted January 10, 2006 Posted January 10, 2006 "Soulfulsaint" is Mr. Cosgrove i believe! Derek My understanding too.
Guest uroffal Posted January 10, 2006 Posted January 10, 2006 Obviously the Modfather, Viscount Woking needs a mention. Believed to have been seen at the 100 Club in the early 80s (post-Jam). I certainly saw his Style Council sidekick and still a collaborator with the Weller collective, Mick Talbot - the original Merton Parka. Also used to see the chap from Jo Boxers stomping the floor down there at that time too. What about Dexy's frontman, Kevin Rowlands. West Midlander, said to have gone to Wigan. "Back in 68 in a sweaty club......O Geno!" Number of them here in sunny South Wales remember Steve Harrington, alias Steve Strange of Visage fame. Yes, Mick Talbot was at 100 club (early '80s) - only the once though I think - his brother was more of regular (at the time). Seem to recall Mick Hucknell talking about the Casino on TV once. Met Kevin Rowland once when working for a high st record shop, he was being dragged around by a record company rep to Gallup shops to promote his awful solo album - I was playing the Charley re-issue of the Randy Brown album which he took a like to and I tried chatting to him about 'northern' but he wasn't too interested - he was quite a misery actually! Then this bloody rep insisted on getting the Randy Brown album in exchange for about 10 copies of his sorry solo LP!
Guest Soultown andy Posted January 10, 2006 Posted January 10, 2006 Lee Oakes janines m8 came to my soultown nites at sheridans quite regularly with paul sadot, and the guy who plays the drug dealer in johhny vegas comedy,[think its called ideal, but cant remember the guys name]now comes to soultown middleton nites .
lisahurley Posted January 10, 2006 Posted January 10, 2006 As for Soft Cell, I thought it was Dave Ball who was the more active Soulie, though I'm willing to be corrected. I'll get me coat. Nick Gareth ha a great story about when he found out Ball was into the soul, hope he graces us with it. He has other funny stories about antics with him....
Simon T Posted January 10, 2006 Posted January 10, 2006 Many years ago I was sitting on the stage at the 100 Club moaning to Ian Clarke who told me to look on the bright side, there was great music, dancing plus some celebrities pop stars in the building; looking across the dance floor, I spotted Banarama leaning up the wall!
jonbuck Posted January 10, 2006 Posted January 10, 2006 I spotted Banarama leaning up the wall! What All Three of Them ???? JB
ockers Posted January 10, 2006 Posted January 10, 2006 Why don't you ask him, think you will find he is on here under a football related user ID Cheers Jock i would if i knew his id i shall have a look!!! cheers jocko!!! stuart you out there????

Judging by the flotsam and jetsam gracing our TV screens in efforts such as the current Celebrity Big Brother or I'm a Non-Entity Get Me Out of Here, I'd say the term is incredibly elastic these days. If Jodie Marsh can be considered a celebrity, theoretically anyone can!
ockers Posted January 10, 2006 Posted January 10, 2006 Corinne Drewery from 80's pop band Swing Out Sister. Pictured below with Sir Richard Searling and someone we know. and was at a recent scooter niter in italy not long after the last togetherness at fleetwood

Guest stevemcmahon Posted January 11, 2006 Posted January 11, 2006 ..Seem to recall Mick Hucknell talking about the Casino on TV once.. Sorry to be bursting bubbles again, but.. Mick Hucknell [deserves this] originally knew jack sh*te about Northern. I remember him coming into the PS shop in London circa '85 armed with a tape which he demanded we put on while he shopped! It was all charbusters Motown. I wouldn't had minded normally, but they took off my Pheonix modern tape to play his rubbish !! Maybe someone later told him about the Casino..
Guest in town Mikey Posted January 11, 2006 Posted January 11, 2006 I think the interview with mick Hucknall was shown on the word. He immediately changed the slant of the conversation to Punks in Manchester in 1976, and made a comparison to Northern Soul, and Wigan Casino. I assumed he had heard the words, but was totally clueless to what they meant. Which is obvioulsy fine. Apart from doing a cover of money's too tight to mention, why would he need to know anything. Its the producer and researchers job to find someone to interview who does know what they are talking about.

Guest Posted January 11, 2006 Posted January 11, 2006 Dale Winton was at quite a few of the Rocket niters. Good dancer too. And the lad (sorry mate useless with names) who is in the orange adverts with the wise Oriental man. The Northern boy is the one who 'translates' the old boys words. He can be seen dancing near and sitting on the 100 club stage regularly. I think he is in some comedy prog, but if its on after 9pm, I am generally asleep. Opps is that the time. Night all Hi Mikey, Tracy Bennett (was in Corrie years ago) also went to Rocket (same nite as Dale)
Guest Posted January 11, 2006 Posted January 11, 2006 right here we go again, celeb corner the rocket circa 2002 Hi Lee, hope you remember me off ANS & KTF, long time no speak! Doesn't Dale look so much better without all that fake tan / make up!

The guy looked like a berk, sounded like a berk and contributed jackshit to the debate.
Guest Stuart T Posted January 11, 2006 Posted January 11, 2006 Wasn't Kathy Burke a modette in the early '80s, or a soulie? In one of her early films (Scrubbers?) I think she had a denim jacket with a Wigan Casino badge on the back. Not sure whether there was any personal connection, probably just the wardrobe department's idea. I thought mods of the female variety hated being called "modettes"? They were some US all girl punk band weren't they?

soulfulsaint Posted January 11, 2006 Posted January 11, 2006 welcome stuart! can you add anymore to the list of celebs? Shane channel 4 just signed Paul O Grady he's into soul and so to is the former head of Coronation Street David Liddiment. He's originally from Huddersfield and as a young guy used to dance to Frank and Twink at the West Indian Club in Hudd.

Stuart Bower Posted January 11, 2006 Posted January 11, 2006 Paul Smith.. designer... Paul O'Grady too... Mark Almond was before he dissed the scene and had an emergency stomach pump at A and E.... Jules Holland too has professed a liking for northern Is the same PAUL SMITH who did "I`ll Run"?

Steve G Posted January 12, 2006 Posted January 12, 2006 Guilty as charged - Good to hear from you man!
Paul R Posted January 12, 2006 Posted January 12, 2006 Don't think you could categorise that fantastic man as a soulie, a rockie, a punkie or indeed anything! He loved it all. I do believe he did a radio show in the 70s from Wigan. Who can confirm? Any details on the show - format, tunes, stuff like that? John Peel fronted a Series on Radio1 in about 1973 about underground or "cult" music scenes, or something. One was about Northern and a certain Mr Levine was interviewed as the expert, and some tracks were played. The only two I remember were "Love On A Mountain Top", which became a hit soon after, and the sublime "I Just Can't Live My Life". Peely later declared the Northern scene the only true underground, and he became a momentary Northern, and Linda Jones fan, playing tracks by her quite often until he discovered something else. Paul
Guest Posted January 12, 2006 Posted January 12, 2006 Seen that Blonde female singer from Moloko down the 100 a couple of times.... dunno her name. Roisin Murphy, she is great fun, went with Elaine, Marco, Ady and Randy to a club she was at (cant remember name) after TOS, Randy didnt enough it much but I think the rest of us had a good time, even if the club wasnt to all our 'tastes'!
Guest Posted January 12, 2006 Posted January 12, 2006 Gareth ha a great story about when he found out Ball was into the soul, hope he graces us with it. He has other funny stories about antics with him.... Dont know if true, but years and years ago! was at La Beat Route and someone said that he was there but I was too busy chatting to notice!
Guest Posted January 12, 2006 Posted January 12, 2006 Corinne Drewery from 80's pop band Swing Out Sister. Saw her at Jazz Cafe and was chatting to her about places been to. Also saw her again at Walthamstow where she guest djed. She lives in the next road to my cousin and he says he sees her and never says hi, but will when sees her next. Thought they would have lot in common as both in a band!
