A Question Of Earnings

Just a Question on something thats been puzzling me for awhile...

As a record collector the most ive ever paid for a record is £150...and I baulked at that to be honest...but in the Northern Soul scene thats an average price...

So my question is...how the hell do you all afford to spend between £100-5000 on a record?!?

You are mostly older and therefore must have families to support so I just dont get where the income comes from...

Are you all Drug Dealers?

Im on a very decent wage in my job and have no debt or baggage but I would still find it impossible to come up with that kind of cash on a regular basis...

So unless you are premiership footballers and noone told me...how do you raise the cash?

Do you all buy and sell the records? Did you have some gems bought cheap from back in the day and just trade them to buy others?

Id be very interested to know

Do you work for the tax office you cheeky sod?

Paul

haha nah...just find it mind boggling the amount of disposable cash everyone on here has...I worked it out that after my outgoings every month...it would take ridiculous amounts of saving for a few months to buy anything I want huh.gif

PS. Im not asking for a breakdown of your earnings!! Im just astounded you have so much disposable income!

Think it's a bit of each to be honest Beeks, must admit i used to think a tenner for a record was outrageous.

I think to be honest it doesn't really matter how much money you've got, if you don't spend it on records you'll find something else to spend it on.

I personally don't spend anything like as much as i did say 7 or 8 years ago, used to regularly spend £300-£400 a month, which isn't much compared to some but a tidy sum all the same.

Nowadays i would say that has halfed or even less, i still love the music as much if not more but don't have the compulsion to want to spend that sort of bread, think it's personally more interesting to buy cheapies/bargains, makes collecting much more interesting imho.

I think its a very personal question and not one to warrant an answer, we don't ask you what you spend your money on.

I was in no way meaning to get your backs up Proph...and it was not a personal question...was just curiosity on the vasts amount of money changing hands on this site...so im sorry if I offended you

See I used to do this too Simon...but id get a shed load of records for that amount of cash...id be lucky to get two decent 7s for that here haha biggrin.gif

I think it probably helped that some of these guys (and girls!) started collecting when we were no more than twinkles in our daddys eyes! Imagine you bought a record in '68 for 2, 6d or whatever ( :D ) then in '98 sold it for £700, thats a tidy profit to spend on some fab new gems! IMO of course!

Interesting question. I've often wondered how my butler and under footman manage to buy vinyl on the pittance I pay them. unsure.gif

,IF YOU CONSIDER THAT A GOOD NITE ON THE PISS COULD COST ABOUT 100QUID ,TAXIS,CURRY ETC EVEN MORE WITH THE OTHER HALF IN TOW,AND NOT USUALLY ARE SOULIES PISSHEADS,SO TO GO A NITER AND SPEND IT ON SOMETHING YOU WANT AND WILL ENJOY LONG TERM MAYBE 100-150 ISNT THAT BAD ,BUT LETS FACE IT ONCE IN A WHILE WE ALL GO OVER BUDGET,BY THE WAY CHRIS WADDLE IS A FANATICAL SOULIE/COLLECTOR AND NOT FORGETTING WES BROWN

Not to mention 'The Nugget' himself Steve Davis.Likes his tunes does our Steve

I think you've hit the nail on the head there...

Beeks - when you're out and about, look out for a guy called Mick Howard. Great DJ who has a very cool record collection. He is also one of the luckiest guys I know when it comes to buying records. Many times he's played a great record and when I've gone and asked him about it, he tells me he paid like £2.50 back in 1825... (Sorry Mick - :D ok it wasn't 1825!).. but you get what I mean.. He also has a good story about a Natural Four record (Hangin on to a lie) that he picked up not too long ago.. shades.gif

Until 2006, I'd spent more in my life on vinyl than I had on property!.. :D I'm sure I can't be normal.. lol Spending a few hundred quid or more on a record was nothing a few years ago.. though generally for folks like Sean and I who weren't here to buy records 30+ years ago, it is a case of buying and selling your vinyl and getting a second job.

I've heard that Andy from Vox Pops Records in town (Manchester) funded his entire business on the discovery of a rare 45 in America...whether thats urban myth ive no idea...never got round to asking him

good thread.

from a purely financial point of view...

If you knew for a fact you can sell a 45 for a grand then would you bat an eyelid a spending 600 or so on it ?

its just being confident you can make the sale or having to money to go for it.

I personally don't have that kind of money to tie up and apart from the odd exception just look to build my colection as cheap as possible. Spares have to be realy cheap to get me interested.

My spending has gone down dramitically but there have been times in the past where all my dispoable income has gone on 45s for a good few months.

I can't believe you suggested there are drug dealers on the northern soul scene its the cleanest living bunch of people i've ever met.

you wont get many spots on this scene if you start DJ'ing with re-issue's y'know... :D

seriously though, Sean Livesey has built up a very good collection of OVO from being 14 /15, it isn't that difficult, Its' time you need to invest rather than money, always watching out for a bargain, learning and researching prices, labels, etc going through sales boxes and listening to stuff you dont recognise. You can build up a good northern soul collection in no time doing that because there are record dealers at most soul nights and alniters.

:( .

If this is your way Beeks of trying to get records on the cheap think again wink.gif .

I earned my fortune from hard work( whistling.gif ),and graft.

Up at the crack of dawn,(no..Not that Dawn :D ), licking yard owt wi' tongue, before off to a 16 hour shift down t'pit.

After that i started my own "business" - car booting.

I was only saying the other day to Theo Paphitis," You know mush,i've made that much money,i'm gonna invest it all....................in Northern Soul records and pay a fortune for 'em along the way".

Drug dealing, gambling, holding up banks.........steer clear of them.

Paying up yer mortgage, inheriting money, pulling scams,...its the future.

credit cards are a god send to this scene thumbsup.gif and in some cases money that's not your own :D

too true.. I remember turning 21, got a credit card and subscribed to Tim Brown's list... it's been a disaster ever since!..

I feel your pain.... my queen collection (that I worked hard to get) is worth f'k all.

Maybe your dance records will have their day in ten years or so.. if they're rare enough and enough people try to re-ignite the scene...

And chatting about them. Taking advantage of the knowledge of some of the 'more experienced' collectors is invaluable.

I bet most people on here now who buy records have at some point been sat up at all hours of the night watching and waiting for an auction to end because they're buying records or travelled miles to a do because they're picking up a certain record. I've seen people logging on, watching records at weekenders too. Far more committed that I ever have been..

You know what they say, there's money in muck!!!

I had a big collection of deep house and garage, i've had no problems selling, giving away and donating these, there's still a big market. The funds i made went towards buying more soul records. Happy days!!
