Guest Beeks
Just a Question on something thats been puzzling me for awhile... As a record collector the most ive ever paid for a record is £150...and I baulked at that to be honest...but in the Northern Soul scene thats an average price... So my question is...how the hell do you all afford to spend between £100-5000 on a record?!? You are mostly older and therefore must have families to support so I just dont get where the income comes from... Are you all Drug Dealers? Im on a very decent wage in my job and have no debt or baggage but I would still find it impossible to come up with that kind of cash on a regular basis... So unless you are premiership footballers and noone told me...how do you raise the cash? Do you all buy and sell the records? Did you have some gems bought cheap from back in the day and just trade them to buy others? Id be very interested to know Link to comment Social source share

Guest Simon
Do you all buy and sell the records? Did you have some gems bought cheap from back in the day and just trade them to buy others? Id be very interested to know Think it's a bit of each to be honest Beeks, must admit i used to think a tenner for a record was outrageous. I think to be honest it doesn't really matter how much money you've got, if you don't spend it on records you'll find something else to spend it on. I personally don't spend anything like as much as i did say 7 or 8 years ago, used to regularly spend £300-£400 a month, which isn't much compared to some but a tidy sum all the same. Nowadays i would say that has halfed or even less, i still love the music as much if not more but don't have the compulsion to want to spend that sort of bread, think it's personally more interesting to buy cheapies/bargains, makes collecting much more interesting imho. I think you've hit the nail on the head there... Beeks - when you're out and about, look out for a guy called Mick Howard. Great DJ who has a very cool record collection. He is also one of the luckiest guys I know when it comes to buying records. Many times he's played a great record and when I've gone and asked him about it, he tells me he paid like £2.50 back in 1825... (Sorry Mick - ok it wasn't 1825!).. but you get what I mean.. He also has a good story about a Natural Four record (Hangin on to a lie) that he picked up not too long ago.. Until 2006, I'd spent more in my life on vinyl than I had on property!.. I'm sure I can't be normal.. lol Spending a few hundred quid or more on a record was nothing a few years ago.. though generally for folks like Sean and I who weren't here to buy records 30+ years ago, it is a case of buying and selling your vinyl and getting a second job. Dylan
good thread. from a purely financial point of view... If you knew for a fact you can sell a 45 for a grand then would you bat an eyelid a spending 600 or so on it ? its just being confident you can make the sale or having to money to go for it. I personally don't have that kind of money to tie up and apart from the odd exception just look to build my colection as cheap as possible. Spares have to be realy cheap to get me interested. My spending has gone down dramitically but there have been times in the past where all my dispoable income has gone on 45s for a good few months. I can't believe you suggested there are drug dealers on the northern soul scene its the cleanest living bunch of people i've ever met. Link to comment Social source share

You can build up a good northern soul collection in no time doing that because there are record dealers at most soul nights and alniters. Jayne.x. I bet most people on here now who buy records have at some point been sat up at all hours of the night watching and waiting for an auction to end because they're buying records or travelled miles to a do because they're picking up a certain record.
