DJ's, where and when did you make your debut and how did it go?
Pirate radio. Surrounded by so much water I haven't needed a bath since...

Come to think of it, aside from half an hour helping some guy out while he took a break I haven't DJed since either.

My first DJ experience was at the city club in Peterborough when Stef and Mick Cooper were promoters. I have the poster on wall it was July 27th 2007 which seems like it will be an anniversary soon lol.

I wasn't so much nervous but i was first on and as that was when all the newer rookie DJ's got a spot i didn't have many come in to see my set but the ones who did enjoyed it. i still have my setlist somewhere and Stef enjoyed hearing as he called it nice youth club sounds of Jimmy James - Help Yourself (one of my favs).

Stef was hoping i would do more but it never came about and then it went to new owners and that is that.

Should i DJ again i will even keep my setlists it would make great readings down the line to when we look back and see what we had been playing

cant remember much about my first time....djing that is !..probably more sucsessful than the other tho !

was at a scooter do in norwich sometime in the late 80s was just helping out the dj with a little box of reggae

a year or so later got paired up with a friend of a friend who was biulding a reggae sound system and needed someone with a good reggae collection..first couple of times was just passing him the tunes after that i took over and he hardly got a go on the dex again !!

cant really remember being nervous back then...sometimes a bit paro but that was probably the copius ammounts of hash we were smoking in the van before hand !!

never use to use the mike back then as with reggae normally some mc types wanting to "chat"..i was a "selecter"...first time on the mic at a northern do was a bit nervous...and more recently supporting "from the jam" at bristol academy was a bit nervous...big stage with decks right in the middle at the front !!...after a few tunes was well away even with 1000 faces looking at me still jigged about a bit and was gutted id forgot to ask for a mic !...sometimes now i think when djing maybe i talk too much, which is odd cos in a crowded room i hardly say a word

My first DJ spot was in 1979 at Newcastle - under - Lyme all dayer. I went on after GARY RUSHBROOKE and after me came RICHARD SEARLING. I thought I was thrown in the deep end, I was crapping myself (nearly). At the end of my spot

RICHARD did'nt know I was even on before him. (THAT WAS A LONG TIME AGO)

I have posted the where / what / when of my DJ debut , when the topic has been previously broached , but here are the details again ......

I was a collector and club goer , with no intentions of / aspirations to DJing , and was happy to continue with my activities , leaving the "Jimmy Savilling " as I called it , to others .......

It was at The Central in Leeds in 1968, on what is now called ( possibly was called the same then ) Spring Banlk Holiday Sunday ........

I was / had been a attendee ( when I could ) of the club on its' Tuesday , Friday and Sunday sessions since the previous year ( sometimes working behind the bar on a Tuesday night ) , and was always one of the first down the stairs .......

8 PM came , and there was no sign of the regular DJ , and the assembled masses were becoming restless : Joan ( The owner of The Central with her husband , Len ) had received a telephone call from said platter spinner , to say he had gone to Scarborough , and was stopping there until Monday ......

Joan saw me , and press ganged me into standing in for the absent DJ , telling me to use their collection of records ( which contained a wide and good selection of records , which had rhythm and blues , ska , soul orientated discs , plus quite a lot of Motown , Atlantic , Sue and Stax ) , telling me that I knew what to do , and that I would be alright , " swaying " me with the promise of as many pints of Watney's Red Barrell I wanted in return for doing so .......

I " battled " through , doing the best I could , and went home , thinking no more about it , simply planning for a return on the Tuesday as a punter .......

I turned up on the Tuesday , and was greeted by Joan , telling me that I had done her proud on the Sunday , and would I like to DJ on a regular basis : I agreed , and spent the next couple of years ( until moving from Leeds in 1971 ) as a member of Joan and Len's " Central Family " ........

The rest , as they say , is history ; and from then on , it was all downhill  ........

After a year or so of polishing the act in my record room, I was both thrilled and petrified to be asked by Carl Willingham to play a short set at his and Maria's Wedding Anniversary party, back in 2007. Being asked to put your records along with your musical taste, where your mouth is, really is a leveller!!!

The fact that it coincided with my own birthday made it extra special.

After the most horrendous journey up from London (9 hours!! I kid you not) and beginning to think we'd never make it, we arrived with 30 minutes to spare. Any nerves were soon dissolved by Nick Hackett's pep talk and by the encouragement I got from seeing people actually dancing to my choice of records. So much so that I would have happily spent the rest of the evening behind the decks.

A real baptism by fire to play my debut in front of such a knowlegable crowd but an experience I'll never forget and one I will always be grateful to Carl for giving me the chance.

Incidentally, my 2nd set was in the Carl Willingham Suite at Middleton early this year. Having spent 8 hours working on the door that night and having almost no chance of getting into the room to get a feel of the room and atmosphere beforehand, this really was a scary prospect! At one point that evening, I had the task of turning away 5 or 6 non-soulies who liked the idea of an all-night bar. Believe me, that was easier than stepping behind those decks.

Again, Seeing people dancing and the words of encouragement I recieved made it a far less frightening hour than I ever thought it would be. In fact, Maria had to almost physically drag me away after my hour was up!!!! LOL
