What about when you have sold most of those top records, lost most of the knowledge built up over the first 20 years, coz youve been away the last 10 years, cant dance as good or for as long as once could, dont look as good as one once thought, and dont even know half the records getting played????

Hard one there miss joan of the turntable.When l went to bletsoe the one and only time it was with older lads who in turn knew the RIGHT people who were older than them.Didn't really think about being accepted,just kept my head down,glad to be part of this seceret thing (in those days anyway).Same thing when my mate said he'd got us a lift to the torch,say nowt and hope the fella didn't change his mind.Should we accept younger people?,don't give much thought to it either way.If younger soul fans are keen and more importantly genuine.....and thats the hard bit genuine,then they'll get to know who they want to and go where they want ,why the heck should they pay any attention to the older crowd if they don't want to.One thing is for sure they don't have to dodge the right orrible bastards that were about in the 70's thats for sure.The folk today are generally more friendly.My last thought and it always amazes me us 40/50 somethings who get to the nighters seem to have far more go in em and look like they're enjoying themselves far more than most 20/30 somethings,l know for sure the friends l park up at allnighters with and have the crac with do atb tezza

I was 15 when I first went to Wigan in 78, immature and gullible, but it only took two or so weeks there to reach adulthood. You had to grow up fast in those days to be able to survive. Everyone knew then and knows now who the good ones and the bad ones were/are and who to avoid, unless they were/are lacking a bit of the old grey matter upstairs!!

It's the music that counts and I've loved and lived it for 34 years now. Why cant people keep their soul-destroying opinions to themselves as I for one am sick to the back teeth of hearing them on this site!!!!! Constructive criticism yes. Bullshiting and backstabbing please keep to yourselves. I normally bite my tongue to stop myself posting on here to some of the absolute garbage that some people post, but things are getting well out of hand so decided to put in my two peneth. No one need answer to this, as I don't really give a shite if you do or don't agree and I certainly won't be posting or reading anything else on here again!!!!!!!!

Interesting thread Joan - I've been surprised by quite a few things I've read today. In all the stories I've heard. I've never heard anyone talk of trouble at or around Wigan.. or any big soul venue really.

There was trouble at most of them, but it didn't affect the average punter , i dont think. Ive seen people being battered in the toilets at Wigan...at Loughborough you had to run a gauntlet of locals to make it to the door....Parr hall had soulies posing as DS and robbing people! It always went on, but if you were with the right crowd, you remained untouched. Also, as people on here have said, I was SO awe inspired by the music and dancing when I started (76) that I just watched and listened (like I do now! ) and treated everyone with the respect that they gave me. Never had a problem as a result.

If talking about all-nighters, I remember going to my first very well. It was St Ives in 1975, before that it was an all-dayer at Kettering Central Hall ......Any road up, gotta tell you it was a life changing experience, yeah! it was that good. (Good = f**king brilliant)

Of course I was a 'div' or 'sap' I was wet behind the ears and had no clue about this strange underground world. You've got to remember that pubs even shut at 10:30 back then and here we were just out of school not even old enough to drink beer, going great distances to these strange places that started at midnight. Fu*ck me it was exciting.

We would live just for the weekends and do anything just to get there. We loved it. Of course there were always dodgy people about (some even weird but that's another tale) as in all walks of life and you had to become savvy pretty quick unless you wanted to be ripped off one way or another. On the other hand let's not forget the friends met along the way who cared and looked after you, friends still with us, still 'soulin' still travelling to get their fix of this great music we call 'Soul'. Also let's remember quite a few friends lost along the way, some who in honesty were only in it for the social aspect and some who are no longer with us. You sort of hooked up with some people and tended to go most places with them, and the more you went the more you got to know more and more people and the more respect you got I guess. Anyway what struck me looking back was that nearly everyone back then was young. When I say young I mean maybe only 10 years difference between us. I even remember remarking on some looking old because he had a tash.

I think it's a different situation now, where there are the 'true' soul lovers who if you like have stood the test of time and still go out of their way for their love of the music. I'm not too sure why there aren't more youngsters into it in this country, maybe it is the thought of being out with a load of 'old' people. After all it is a social thing as well.

But if we're talking about the music it's far deeper than that. I think it's either something you 'get' or you don't and I don't think that age should be a factor.

I've written all this and I'm not too sure why.....the mutterings of an old fu*cker who has maybe earned his stripes

Nice post Val, i'm the same as when I started in 1967, in this scene for the duration because of my love of black soul music, and I welcome the younger one's, and i'm very happy to pass on any info that i've aquired over the year's to them

I am constantly impressed with the flow of knowledge coming from young and older on this site, thats what drew me to it in the first place....

One fact remains, the younger ones are digging up a lot of interesting tunes and facts the older folks have ignored or were too distracted to notice..(count me as an example)..save a few more progressive types.

I really slowed down my Djing 3 years ago (after 15+ years) because of the ego horsesh*it that was taking hold all over...and IPODS/carvers..

There is no REAL scene in Los Angeles because of this.

I remember Ady Potts having a Gloria Gaynor carver that many didnt know and some were offering big $$ for.

The b/side of "never can say goodbye" a $2 record. One of my favorite examples of ego before logic..

What makes me laugh is the desire to only have RARE records has made these "deep" djs look like fools..

Many folk who were throwing money at big buck tunes are now on the hunt for cheaper underplayed/semi knowns etc.. I have always done that because i aint got a choice, don't have the big bucks but a decent size pencil..

So many folk have gone on a mad blitz of cash to catch up and have the so called big tunes, many of them are really washed out as well... I like djs to find there own sound and not be some northern soul jukebox..

At my first nighter at Kelmarsh in Northants (was it 1969 anyone?) I found myself surrounded by 100 skinheads while i had hair down my back (none on my head). Everyone totally accepted me, Mad George from Bedford sold me some gear and a skinhead girl said "it's nice to see some weirdos round here!" she actually meant it in a nice way. The scene was so small in those days that fellow soulies were glad of anyone showing an interest. Later on I found some of the Wheel lot who used to come down a bit superior, but they did dress well. I never had any problems as a punter from that day on: as a promoter that's another story-but still not much in thirty years.
