I'm sure that most of you on here know that this is NOT Motown & NOT the Originals that recorded for Motown. It's a boot on a fake label. The Originals on Suspension Records and with Della Renee are another group altogether!

What is it a boot of? It's sure fire winner in our house. One of my favourite Norman Whitfield collaborations. It's a great version. Who is it and how did it get a release on a boot label? Any other releases by the group any good? Or have I not understood dexters post?

It's a fantastic record. Also done by the Dynamics on Cotillion of course. That version is equally excellent, albeit faster and more urgent.

Who else recorded this one? :(

Anyone scan up the labels please - both the black one and a better copy of the gold issue if possible? :) Label address details etc. would be appreciated too please?

I only have the rubbish scan of the gold one below.

Cheers

Richard

Personally, i think The Temptations version is simply the dogs dangly bits and my favourite version :)

Still not clear about the term 'boot' in relation to this disc. I'm presuming the fact that the Originals or Motown didn't receive dues is maybe where the term is leading to confusion. What's a fake label? Kitch played an alternate version by The Tempts at Burnley last month. It's a great song that is good to see being played regularly.

Sorry, I didn't mean the Tempts - who else apart from them, the Originals and the Dynamics did it? :(

Here's the truth regarding the Originals record under discussion here.

The Originals were a group from the Cleveland suburbs. They probably formed in 1965 and had no idea, or interest, that there was a group on Motown using the same name. They were a 'greaser' band, which in Cleveland means white guys playing soul, or more accurately - NOT British Invasion or 'Mod' style. These bands usually tell me they played 'Motown' instead of 'soul'!

They released only the one 45 on Suspension. The first pressings were the gold/copper label, which was pressed at Pama in Cleveland. To people in the know, Pama produced a legendary run of very limited pressing 45s and LPs, many of 100 or less. The Originals is one of three (that I can think of) soul-oriented records (the others are rock, garage, psych) done there. The black label copies were pressed (in Chicago) after the record became a hit, and are much more common in the Cleveland area. I'm not going to dump on the seller and call out value, though. Pretty sure the record came out in 1967 (no later that early '68).

The most 'famous' member of the Originals was Tom Baker. He's the same guy that's credited on some of the Way Out and other Cleveland area records. He moved to Michigan (still lives there) and is a Christian. Very talented multi-instrumentalist and arranger. Other members of the band played in popular Cleveland rock bands of the early 1970s.

I WISH I HAD THIS MUCH INTEREST BACK IN JULY WHEN I HAD IT FOR SALE.I EVENTUALLY SOLD IT FOR A FAIR PRICE(CHEAP).I THINK OUT OF ALL THE DIFFERENT VERSIONS THIS IS THE ONE I LIKED THE MOST,BUT NOT ENOUGH TO KEEP.

THANKS FOR THE HISTORY ON THE RECORD ALSO,BECAUSE I PRESUME LIKE MANY THOUGHT IT WAS THE SAME ACT WHO RECORDED FOR MOTOWN.

NEIL.

i think my favorite may be the profonix on davey-paul, and it's cheap, too! shouldn't cost more than about a tenner.

That's the one I was thinking of Matt thumbsup.gif I have the 45 too no.gif - light blue label.

Spotted that the Profonix version credits the writers as Holland-Dozier-Holland.

However, the Orignals credits S.Moy-N.Whitfield-C.Grant, as does the Dynamics version on Cotillion.
