Bitchdj Posted July 7, 2008 Posted July 7, 2008 theres been a lot of talk about new blood on the scene lately and i was wondering if for instance a young chap/chapess wandered onto our little scene today what they would make of the music??? could todays current biggies seem like old hat to them within a few months?and subsequently real old oldies seem like newies to them because nobody plays them anymore??? my son is 15 and has had no choice but to listen to soul music really and hes been exposed to a lot of obscure sounds everything from unknowns to current spins ...funk.....jazz....modern...x-over blah blah blah ....and we are both into a lot of forms of music...ive taken him to quite a few soul nites and dayers over the years and he loves to dance.... he has a small record collection and tonite he decided to dust them off and play them on my decks (although he has his own record player )....now.....i really enjoyed what he played ...sang along tapped my foot etc....i then stopped..... and thought ..(ouch that hurt)....these are really naff....but are they???? are we so snobbish ( first to admit to that one)....that we poo poo classics we were raised on...is it beneath us to listen and appreciate right back where we came from musically speaking......?...and do you think the youth we are trying to attract to the scene need a sort of baptism of fire by having to go through from the beginning of our soul roots to present day sounds?....anyway while you think on here are a selection of sounds my son played earlier...... jnr walker -tune up marvin gaye-little darling four tops-7 rooms of gloom four tops-turn to stone showstoppers-what can a man do roosevelt grier-in my tenement edwin starr-time spinners-shes gonna love me at sundown tempests-someday (ok that one is on stardust lol) boots in my house joe stampley & uniques-not too long ago edwin starr-s.o.s cajun heart-gotta find a way laverne baker-wrapped tied and tangled oh and please dont laugh at this one...david & the giants-superlove nothing spectacular there but he ( and I ) really enjoyed them..... cookie

When i first met all the Irish lads about 10 maybe 12 years back when they where all young kids ( still are ) they didnt know oldies as such. They knew and owned a lot of the stuff that was getting played on the scene back then but where gobsmacked at oldies like what you listed. They took it all in there stride, embraced it and loved them for what they are "class soul records" They now have most of the stuff in there own collections. Unless they,ve moved them on for some of there rare stuff. The point to all this is they had and still have a willingness to accept the whole package of northern soul without sticking it in to different rooms. Modern, R&B etc etc. Its all part and parcel of what makes it what it is. If your gonna go out and moan about the music.Think first Dont forget you may have heard a certain record last time you went anywhere but i bet there,s loads saying i aint heard that record for years. Spacehopper Posted July 8, 2008 Posted July 8, 2008 i think youre spot on..a lot of the classics from early wigan,torch etc were great tunes most of which you only had to hear the first few bars and you instantly liked....so if youre new to the scene just like generations before these are the tunes youre gonna want to hear....maybe some of the tunes being played now are not 'new' discoveries at all but were overlooked by djs back then cos they were 'growers' ... to them ....remember back then the djs who went looking in the states had warehouses full of quality vinyl to look through....not like today where you may have to look through piles of shit, a lot of which isnt really soul or even good dancers at all ,just to find a couple of gems...whether it be in one of the few shops left or e-bay i suppose its much the same in reggae....tunes like double barrell ,54-46 or bob marleys could you be loved are all wicked tunes which is why they were so big...every new generation is gonna love them but most serious reggae djs/collecters are bored with playing them and are also a bit 'snobbish' towards people who request them whats the saying...familiarity breeds contempt ? or something like that
