Some might say like you that the scene needs the cobweb dusting off but what it don't need is someone with no or little pedigree trying to tell us what or music scene needs. You harp on about you pomoted various events or styles of music around Manchester . That begs the question .Why jump on the soul bandwagon and try to change it. Sorry Beeks but you seem to be doing more harm than good IMHO . Some things just don't add up with you and thats what's making some of us sit back and wonder, some out loud. There's too many people read this forum and either never post, or just tow the line, for fear of getting a mauling. Since I have arrived all I have seen is bickering between various promoters about venues...underhand tactics...over promotion...saturation of nights etc etc... The solution to this is simple...though the old brigade might find it hard to swallow... You need new blood on the scene...you need to promote not just the nights but the music and atmosphere you create... You only have to look at nights like Beat Boutique in Manchester and the relatively new Shake N Fingerpop in Wigan to know that the younger generation are becoming more and more aware of the music all of us love... In contrast...I went to Prestwich last Friday...fantastic night thoroughly enjoyed...great music...friendly atmosphere...but absolutely no sign of young faces...perhaps a smattering here and there...but nothing significant... Now I know all you promoters out there are great at what you do...so are the younger promoters...can there not be a happy medium between the two where you can attract both young and old to your nights? My night used to be busy every week,...and yes I ran it every week...with ages from 18 up to 60+ coming to enjoy good soul music... What im trying to say...and yes im a little long winded...is that you need to actively promote to the younger crowd if this scene has any chance of surviving another 10-20 years...because by then the original soulies...will be too old to go out dancing...then what? Yes I know you can be notoriously snobby when it comes to safeguarding your music...I have had a love affair with it for many years now too...but its sad to say im in the minority...and im in the minority because it is little publicised....hammer the youth of today with enough flyers...actively take an interest in them...and they will come to the nights...im not saying it will be everyones cup of tea...but dont underestimate the youth...they are very clued up these days...and want something to throw themselves into...find a balance and there will be no bickering amongst promoters...because the scene will flourish... Ill give you a parallel...ive been playing holdem poker for 10 years in the casinos...when I started you would find it hard to find a game anywhere...then the internet took off...now you can play it anywhere... THIS SCENE WILL NEVER BE COMMERCIAL!! So you can cut that crap straight away...it will never be mainstream again...so abit of good promotion to the younger generation will NOT damage the integrity of the scene...it will just help keep what we all love alive... Rant over. Intersting idea that's very hard to pull off. It's easy to promote this music anywhere in the world, it's great music, it will always have a place in clubs. But it's the promotion of the 'x factor' that's hard to achieve. I assume after picking up flyers for the events at either of the clubs or from internet search engines. The seeds are sown and that's the sign of it working. I've not been to Beat Boutique in Manchester, but am due to be up there soon, I would like to think that the veteran soulies would support what they are doing there, and help promote the atmosphere. This sort of thing doesn't bother me in the slightest, in fact I've bought things a few times, especially when I lived in Hastings, there were very few soulies so I often used to wear an N.Soul t shirt and people would stop and talk now and again. I also used a Wigan Casino mug as a begging bowl on occasions.

Tried it mate, not enough female soulies were willing to do pole dancing in the intermission between DJ spots, plenty of the blokes were though and old Pete wasnt impressed, bloody prude. . We had 3 lads at the last Cracker that Bob Pollard told about the do, they are regulars at the Market harborough do, and they were 19 to 20 years old. They were dancing all night and went home well sweaty. I think (not 100%) that one of them was sick in urinal. But hey we were all young once.
