As no one ever mentioned that the 'youngsters' or 'kids' are probably 5 to 10 years older than most of the people at a nighter were when they started going to the Torch/Wigan Stafford etc?

It's all a bit patronising.

certain parts of the scene are already commercial.....have a look at the brit photos and some of the cream cracker club a while ago.....both local soul nights.........with market stalls selling err! tat, shirts ect ect. Now tell me i'm wrong. These are the places to avoid imo.

That's complete and utter bollocks. I drink quite happily all night. I don't cause fights, I don't spill beer on the dancefloor, and I'm not rude to people. (Apart from Johnny Weston, but that's allowed :D )

You're trying to take the same fascist approach that the Government took to smoking. You don't like the effect it has on people so ban it. Prohibition re-visited

Alcohol doesn't cause any problems at niters. None whatsoever. People do.

I don't dispute that some people cause problems after drinking alcohol, but there again, some people drive home after taking amphet. Which is more likely to kill someone. A pissed up bloke at a niter, or someone on drugs in a car ? If we apply your logic to that, let's ban cars because cars kill people.

How do you solve the problem though. There's the difficult bit because I have no idea, but just banning it isn't the answer.

I like a drink with the best of 'em Dave but IMHO nighters were a better place before all night drinking at them came into being. It was better with the drugs and soft drinks than it is now with alcohol. Most of the problem has been from locals after a late drink causing friction with soulies but there's also been more incidents amongst soulies in recent years than in previous years. Not saying they weren't there before but problems were probably kept away from venues but alcohol brings out the worst in people.

It's ridiculous trying compare the affects of amphet after a nighter and alcohol during a nighter, what about all those over the limit on alcohol after a nighter driving home, alcohol is far worse than the amphet. Why not compare the effects of amphet during a nighter against the effects of alcohol during a nighter, I know which would come out worse....(not condoning drugs btw  )

If you want all-night drinking then enforce a membership and keep out the local idiots looking for a late drink with no interest in the music, that would be a start.....or are all-night promoters more interested in making money? Most would sooner pocket say £70 from seven local idiots and sort any trouble after it's happened rather than keep them out and have a trouble free night for the people that really matter.

Well put Brian...Some of the oldies...(and I say some because its not all...some are very friendly and actively encourage)...just dont like the younger generation poking their noses in...in the early days it was worse...used to get some VERY frossty receptions in Manc...especially the Wheel whenever me and my girlfriend at the time would show up...if it wasnt for the fact im loud and generally dont care what people think about me then to be honest id have been scared off along time ago...fair play to your son Brian...he's doing a grand job...

I have to agree about the frosty reception, its getting less as Im getting older, but I still get called a kid aged 30!! It really used to put me off. Recently I've also started going out on my own as well as it just gets embarrasing to have to explain to friends (into soul, funk and dub but not northern) that there is a code, a set of rules that you must never break! and that you enjoy dancing in rooms packed with folk who will constantly question your motives. Its as if the older soulies cant believe that they have something I would be interested in!!

That said, im a soul junkie and Ill do whatever it takes to get my fix!

Recent venues have been much better -The Attic in Mansfield is a very special place

I've an idea. Lets put as many obstacles as we can in front of young soulies. Also ignore them, don't go to their do's, frown on everything they do and wear, and then the scene will be dead in 5 to 10 years, or it will be so laughable that no one will ever want to go.

What a result eh?

When Beeks said "borrowing from older DJS " I assumed he meant borrowing as in being influenced by or playing tunes they did - not actually physically borrowing their records. Did you think that or was it just me? I've got this vision now of your Paul going round to Butch's house saying "Please Mr Butch can I borrow that cover up you played at the 100?"...:shhh:

Terry

Well at least you've called it the Cream Cracker Club this time and not your customary "Local soul shite" so i suppose communication is a wonderful thing. I dont think im going to do any flyers in the future for the Cream Cracker Terry, your rants and put downs are pure brilliance promoting in its self. Cheques in the post  .

Regarding Keith selling his badges etc.. or Mark selling his shirts, what does it matter? It doesn't in any way detract from the dancing. I mean i can see the issue if they set up in the middle of the dance floor or i was getting a 10% cut on their takings, or the tunes stop spinning for 30 minutes and the lights come on so that certain(hand picked) attendee's of the Cream Cracker can model his latest items. But these things dont happen so once again, whose it hurting for christs sake, certainly not "the scene". If people want to make and buy "Northern Soul" merchandise then fine as with the venues that are attended and tastes in music, THAT IS THEIR WANT. I have in the past raised my hat to some of the commentsd you have made on here in the past, but IMO i believe you do more harm than good in what you are passionate about on the scene and unfortunately you cant see it.

Kev

P.S.

In light of the constant advertising that you do for the Cream Cracker Soul (shite) Night please accept my grateful thanks and should you ever be at a loose end and attend the Cream Cracker i can guarantee that in payment you can have a lifetimes free admission.

merely answering a point about the commercial side of the soul scene,as your club has nothing to do with the soul scene and you ,yourself have nothing to do with the scene....even locally....well unless your djing for one of your pals (and I use the term djing loosely) I apologise unreservedly.....would say see you out and about.......but as you can't be bothered to go anywhere, then I won't see you out and about....unless I'm shopping in rothwell CO.OP

Maybe if the less than grown ups (and thats in mentality rather than age) didn't keep coming up with the same old ideas that have been around for the last 25 years and were as irrelevant then as they are now, there woudn't be the need to keep bickering.

I love the way many people on this site has turned it around now and any attempt at quality control is now shouted down as just those old geezers, soul police etc. etc.

If you want a watered down version of the real thing, good, on you go, nothin wrong with that per se, but be clear about your motives for wanting it easy and accessible. I know where to avoid then, having done both over the year. Mike's question about dumbing it down was so pertinent, but obviously sailed over the head of many on here.

The reason its been repeated is a large number of people have seen and heard it all before, and interestingly the bickering masses are still here. Maybe that tells you something.

That happened (probably still does) at Deep funk except they were breakers who'd dance for a about 30 seconds each in the centre of a circle which took up most of the top floor. Bloody annoying it was - the tourists loved it, though. ph34r.gif

Never mind what people say this scene has done fine for the best part of40 yrs and will go on for a long time yet , most members on here have a long pedigree in the music they love and , I am sure carry it on for a long time yet. Some might say like you that the scene needs the cobweb dusting off but what it don't need is someone with no or little pedigree trying to tell us what or music scene needs. You harp on about you pomoted various events or styles of music around Manchester . That begs the question .Why jump on the soul bandwagon and try to change it. Sorry Beeks but you seem to be doing more harm than good IMHO . WE DON'T WANT A NEW WAVE
