Pete S Posted July 6, 2008 Posted July 6, 2008 Had the Jonathan Ross show in the car yesterday morning and he played this record called, I think, "Ten Guitars" and although the vocal was a bit cabaret, the backing track was great and Davina says something like "Is this one of your records" meaning is it a record played on the Northern scene, and I said I don't think so, I've never heard it before...anyway it finished and I said that wasn't bad was it, wonder who it was, and Ross introduced it as being by........ Englebert Humperdinck, I kid you not I'VE HEARD WORSE!!!!

Yeah I can imagine old Tom doing it. So if they had a more authentic soul voice on it, it could well qualify!

And apparently, Engelbert's version was Number 1 for something like 6 months in New Zealand, with "Release Me" not getting a look in (this from Kiwi girfriend of a good mate, haven't checked it for factual accuracy but she was there and I wasn't, so who am I to argue?) I've got a nice Decca demo of "Release Me"/"Ten Guitars", I'm not in the least bit embarrassed to admit. Picked it up on the same day and in the same shop as my Columbia demo of Frank Ifield's "She Taught Me How To Yodel". Not embarrassed to admit I have that, either...
