Blake H Posted July 5, 2008 Posted July 5, 2008 Following a conversation with a mate last week I'm intrested to know if anyone shares my penchant for underground venues. I think it stems from my days at Leeds Central, queuing on the stairs waiting to go in, but subteranean venues always seem to have more atmosphere IMO. Firstly, which venues were/are located underground? Secondly, anyone else agree or not, (claustrophob's exepted ) Blake

Secondly, anyone else agree or not, (claustrophob's exepted ) Blake I personally think you can't beat an underground venue The Twisted Wheel was on the groundfloor and underground but all the atmosphere was generated underground. All the best 60's clubs were underground, the hip Manchester kids wouldn't have gone to big dance halls such as the Ritz or Belve vue they were the cheesy bright lights old hat places. I know Northern Soul graduated to The Mecca and Casino but IMHO it could never have started there it would never have got of the ground(no pun intended)with them venues the Mods wouldn't have gone to them places. The reason not many cool young kids go to NS venues now is because their not cool ,big dance halls, civic centres and worst of all social clubs with bright lights. The young kids will be seen more at Mod venues or in the main modern clubs/bars where they play a more ecclectric mix including northern, funk,R&B,.They don't seem to like smooth 70's they want music to energise them not to send them asleep which goes back to how it all kicked off. ChrisOD1964 Posted July 5, 2008 Posted July 5, 2008 A few years ago they had soul nights in a pub in newcastle called the bridge. it was in the cellar and it was like a sweat box. how hot did it get? dripping off the ceiling onto, you running down the walls. it was a great venue but sadly no doos have been on there for a few years maybe it was the smell of sweaty bods after soul doos put them off letting more be put on. chris

Mach Posted July 5, 2008 Posted July 5, 2008 always liked subterrian venues,a youthie club in bradford st marys thornbury had a great cellar that attracted teenage soulies yrs back, slidy concrete floor only 6 ft high, pich black and the only way you found your way round was by the flickering coloured lights from the dj rostrum in the corner, absolutly staggering atmosphere oh and no windows the sound used to bounce around the place trying to escape to no avail, so us soulies just soaked it up..only downside was same as leeds central...watch out for the pillars when your dancing.

It used to be Irish run and we used to be taken there for Irish dancing in the early 60's, but me and my older brother Sean got thrown out for acting the goat and spoiling it for the other kids. The first pub I ever got barred out of but sadly not the last It was also known as a political pub with lots of different groups meeting in the rooms. So you might have the Revolutionary Geordie Peoples Front meeting in one room and the Peoples Geordie Revolutionary Front meeting in another. Ah tell yer the broon ale bottles used to fly. but only after the liquid had been removed. It had a wonderful old Victorian bar that I hear was gutted out to make more room A Newcastle landmark it was with the local folk group the High Level Ranters playing there almost every week. Also a very shady feeling to the place, when you 1st went down the stairs. There was a do in the early 70,s in Blackburn on a Monday night run by Steve Ellison. Simply called the Underground, it was underneath a pub. I can,t remember the name, long since pulled down.
Jez Jones Posted July 17, 2008 Posted July 17, 2008 Ambassadeur in Bradford, the cellar in that house had atmosphere alright----fooking awesome and scary. Anyone remember it

Just a few locals with not much energy left after the usual heavy weekend. Shame really it had potential. Edited July 31, 2008 by Koolkat
Guest topcatnumpty1 Posted July 22, 2008 Posted July 22, 2008 Ambassadeur in Bradford, the cellar in that house had atmosphere alright----fooking awesome and scary. Anyone remember it Walked past it last night ---been closed as a club for years --but still with the sign"Champagne" which was it,s last incarnation--you can still tell it was the back of some bugger,s gaff. Ste Henderson Posted July 22, 2008 Posted July 22, 2008 "Chambers" Rochdale Town Hall as it says it was the chambers underneath the town hall. It ran from early to mid seventies playing soul and ska, it closed down for health and safety reasons only one entrance/exit, it was my introduction to soul music, fantastic venue but would only serve soft drinks. I am sure somebody on here can give more detail I only went about 3 occasions ( i was only 13 at the time and you had to be 16 to get in, i just hung on to my older sisters coat tails! ) . this area in the town hall from what i can gather is now just used for storage, but it was the most perfect umderground venue. Steve
Mach Posted July 24, 2008 Posted July 24, 2008 Ambassadeur in Bradford, the cellar in that house had atmosphere alright----fooking awesome and scary. Anyone remember it scary alrite, could do a thread all about bfd venues, there were that many..bensons,annabellas,zodiac,r.o.a.b,etc etc not all underground granted, but plenty of atmosphere,oh the beehive was another cellar venue, though more dingy than atmospheric and damp and i did,nt dig the uneven paving stone floor, spilt too much beer tripping up on way back from the bar,..

Everyone seems to be overlooking the Greatstone which is held in rooms beneath the Greatstone Hotel. Had difficulty actually findingour way in to the place on our first visit! Great music policy and guests, great bar prices and a free buffet. Must admit I'd been 2 or 3 times before I realised there weren't dodgy dealings going on in the back room but people ploughing in to the sarnies and decorative tomatoes cut in to the shape of a flower like yer mum used to do to be posh.
