Guest Matt Male Posted July 4, 2008 Posted July 4, 2008 I've got this (see below) Patti Austin on Columbia, same song as the Yvonne Baker. It's only got a label on one side, the other side is an uptempo version of 'Day By Day' the song from Godspell. Also sung by Patti i think. Anyone know anything about it? I don't think it's a boot as i saw one for sale at a nighter a few years back, i just wonder why it doesn't have a flip side label. Maybe it's come off or never had one?
Pete S Posted July 4, 2008 Posted July 4, 2008 It's just been printed without a label Matt. I'm sure I used to have this on a different design label, orange and black.

Compared to the other Label Colours for Columbia, The Grey had a comparatively short run if I remember correctly. Just wondering if this would help to Approximate Year for this release. Thinking THE LORELEI - STOP & GEORGE CARROW - ANGEL BABY re-issue.
Sjclement Posted July 4, 2008 Posted July 4, 2008 Cheaper alternative to Yvonne's version, back in the day, Now I thinks its better in its own right. Came out the same time as The Loreli Stop that was on two different cooured labels too

Soul Shrews Posted July 4, 2008 Posted July 4, 2008 I've got this on the red/orange label Matt Male, all the details are exactly the same at first glance to your scan, except for the labels colours of course. Its Patti singing the flip Cheers Paul PS Styrene too
Pete S Posted July 4, 2008 Posted July 4, 2008 Not fit to tie Yvonne Baker's bootlaces - if she wore boots of course

Guest mel brat Posted July 4, 2008 Posted July 4, 2008 (edited) Agree Pete, it's not a patch on Yvonne Baker. So why the hell does it always have to be "either-or"? Why not enjoy both versions for God's sake? As it happens both versions of the song - produced by Billy Jackson - are great in their different ways. Patti's version however had the misfortune to be released in 1972, and was a Blackpool Mecca spin of course (so I guess that would explain any irrational animosity towards it, huh?) Who said anything about either/or and who is being irrational? I just expressed a preference. How can i enjoy a version i don't like? You like both, i don't. I had no idea Patti's version was Mecca spin either and it would make no difference to me if i had. People can enjoy whichever they wish, or both. I prefer Yvonne Baker. Irrational response Mel. There's me doing my Columbo detective bit and the date is on the label, Doh! Still 1972 would make the Grey 1st Issue, Multicoloured probably has 1972 on credit, but would be a later press. It's just not a very good version, it's got nothing to do with year of release or where and when it was played!
Guest mangas soul bhoy Posted May 20, 2009 Posted May 20, 2009 (edited) really after a copy of the patti austin version.. can any one help me out? Edited May 20, 2009 by mangas soul bhoy
Derek Pearson Posted December 28, 2017 Posted December 28, 2017 (edited) Just acquired a large collection of mixed 45's and stumbled upon this record tucked away amongst a load of cheaper end stuff. Didn't know it and it wasn't until I started to investigate it that I discovered it was the classic northern song first cut by Yvonne Baker in 1967. This thread was started in 2008 and in the intervening 10 years the internet and the knowledge contained within it has expanded as far as your imagination will allow. So from what I can gather here's the said 45 in all its various forms: **Grey Columbia issue copy. * Orange Columbia issue copy **'Day By Day' double sided Columbia promo (mono/stereo) copy. Red label Columbia West Coast styrene copy (stamped ZSS 156400-1C / ZSS 156401-1B) I wouldn't be surprised to find out there's a West Coast promo copy out there somewhere to complete the line up? Derek * label scan lifted from Popsike ** label scans lifted from Discogs. Edited December 29, 2017 by Derek Pearson 1
