Guest fuzzyfabs Posted July 2, 2008 Posted July 2, 2008 I bought this modern soul 45 from a guy in Japan: Gregory MaGee: Sunshine, Moonshine / Just might be (Virginia Records Productions) It seems quite obscure. Anyone know the story of this 45 and label? Do you know how much it could be worth? Grazie a tutti!
boba Posted July 2, 2008 Posted July 2, 2008 (edited) I bought this modern soul 45 from a guy in Japan: Gregory MaGee: Sunshine, Moonshine / Just might be (Virginia Records Productions) It seems quite obscure. Anyone know the story of this 45 and label? Do you know how much it could be worth? Grazie a tutti! Gregory Magee was a member of the Mystiques on Twinight and Raw Umber. His father Bobby Magee ran the label. Gregory died suddenly of cancer a few months ago, it was very sad, I was only able to interview Kevin Rowan of the Mystiques in my interview. https://www.sittinginthepark.com/interviews.html There is a good (earlier) northern 45 on the label by a singer named Tony Romance, it's called "Going to the River", it's actually very good but not known. The Raw Umber 45 on the label is okay but the remake of "love one another" by Greg Magee on the label is better than the Raw Umber version. I paid $150 for the specific record you have but it's probably not worth that much as I've seen it sell for less and I needed it for the label number. It is very rare though. Almost everything else on the label is sort of pop-ish and not good in my opinion. The label is from Chicago. Edited July 2, 2008 by boba

Do you know if it's a version of the Bill & Will tune (written by Riley/Sasser/Willis) on Checker?
boba Posted July 3, 2008 Posted July 3, 2008 Do you know if it's a version of the Bill & Will tune (written by Riley/Sasser/Willis) on Checker? I don't think so because tony romance has writing credits on the cut I'm talking about. I tihnk I have the bill and will (just because I collect chess / checker), I will pull it out when I get a chance.

Both tracks are similar themed though (about drowning in the river) and both are r&b-ish. The bill and will is more rock sounding than this cut. Gerald Sims band plays on the tony romance cut. Apparently tony romance has other records on the label but they are crooner-ish.

Thanks for the info. That Bill & Will tune is an alltime (non-soul) fave of mine, it was issued on the ATHENS label prior to getting picked up by Checker.
