Deffinition Of A "modern" Tune

I think that the open mindedness from such DJ's as Ian Levine, Colin Curtis, Richard Searling, Sam, Arthur, Poke etc who introduced a more 'Modern' style of music to the 'Northern scene' (because up until then it hadn't been available) did more good than harm at the end of the day and helped introduce more people still to the scene and to Soul music per se.

Sean

Fully agree with you on the above, Sean with the emphasis on "more good than harm". And your spot on with the introduction of a "newer style", that was not available at that time.

:unsure:Ahh, thank's for your concern Nick, at the moment my big toe is tapping to a deep soul tune. , circa 1968.

quote: oxford dictionary, Soul: a kind of music using elements of gospel and rhythm and blues wink.gif .

You've taken the 1964 tune off the turntable then ?

And drive an equal amount of people off the scene. And it's not openmindedness, it's selfishness, it's forcing their own agenda on people who don't want to know about it. Either listen to our music or go somewhere else.

Agree with ya Pete wink.gif if that's what they wanna listen to, then they should go to a specific venue, that will cater for them. Such as a two roomed event, with a modern room  and a northern room

Why do you think people are forcing you to listen to it, driving people off the scene......we do listen to your music. But do you own this music, is it yours!!!!!! This is a soul forum. I for one, was reared on Northern and always will be greatfully for my soul roots.

Pete, I have been somewhere else EMS and found that the only good folk on there are also on here A handfull of true soul folks. Who do seriously appreciate the whole 60's to current day release's. I have been red carded from EMS but leave you and many other with this statement:

"My arse shows no blisters from the EMS slide. I am here to enjoy a more soulfull ride."

Ah! but it's 'our music' too Pete.

That is if it's Soul music we're talking about here.

If, on the other hand, you're talking about that which masquerades in some quarters as 'Soul' then I think you'll find that Soul fans often do go elsewhere.

Then again, most Soul nights (even the 'Northern' variety) have long since stopped playing the really embarrassing stuff that was deemed acceptable 30 odd years ago.

I suppose it all hinges on whether one believes that the appreciation of Soul Music should be one of continuous revelation... or that it's to remain as a single tablet of stone based on the mid 70's chapter of the last four or five decades.

If it's only that period which pleases you then good luck to you (as I said earlier).

 .. crickey Pete!... how do you ever hear anything new?.. I guess you mean you've no objection to new stuff, if it's 6T's ? (if that makes sense)

My recollection, and indeed others on here is that it wasn't called "modern soul" in 75/76 (although Ian Dewhirst disagrees , but he's wrong  ).

No I'm not LOL. Modern was used to describe the newer releases from the early 70's by most sellers at the time i.e. guy pulls out a copy of Anderson Brothers/Marvin Holmes/The Temprees etc, etc and asks "what's this like mate" and seller says "it's a modern stormer".

So there nyaaaaaah!

Well I think the differance between a 60s tune and a 70's plus tune is obvious, the Raw warts an all sound of the 60s compared to the multi track, over produced, too smooth and perfect sound of the 70s, for me its the 60s sound, no contest

I think you'll find there'd be lots of Soul fans (including those who like 'Modern') who'd agree with you Bazza.

I love 60's Soul.

The GOLDEN period.

Just nothing like it (IMO).

Doesn't stop me liking, loving, or appreciating the newer stuff too though.

Didn't realise that you had to come down on the side of one thing or the other, to be a Soul fan.

Deffinition of a "Modern" Tune

Now I of course realize that any thing made after 1972 at 11:59pm on the 31st of December, is a (spit) Modern tune, but for some reason some folks dissagree with me  no idea why

but I am right arnt I ????

 Bazza

Please dont let,s go round this bloody circle again .Calling stuff which is (IN SOME CASES) 30,odd years old modern is patently ridiculous. If you dont like 70,s and later soul music ,fine, just get on with it :lol:

Yeh, and you lot get yours at Cleethorpes, Whitby & Brid!

Any road up...

... what do we all think of this?

Is it Northern?

Is it Modern?

Is it just a nice bit of uptempo Soul?

Or what?

Sean

Southern Soul ?

ps. Whitley Bay for me

Ditto Pete!

No but seriously - it does get my back up a bit because it's being told I must like something or I can't like soul music. I do detest modern soul but it's easy to avoid hearing it. To the chap who said 30 year old records aren't modern soul, yes they are, it's a LABEL/DESCRIPTION for the style of music, not the age of the record. And also to reiterate, I love those early to mid 70's dancers like East Coast Connection, Norma Jenkins, Life, Gentlemen & Their Lady, Marvin Holmes, The Nights, Skullsnaps etc etc, love 'em. Just hate plinky plonky syndrum disco shite

Trying to wind you up Sean

never had you down as an 'elitest' Peter  During the late days of the Torch some new releases started to do the biz, First Choice--this is the house, Tower of Power ---This time its real, Denise Laselle--Do Me Right..and many many more...

They started me on on a quest to discover soul, and although the first 18months at Wigan were without doubt the best I'll ever remember the blinkers that those who DID the casino dj rosta with regard to new releases (modern) was scandalous imo so much so that the dross come 1975 that was coming out of Station Rd forced me out of the GREAT venue to find solitude in my own all nighter THE WIRRINA Peterborough....60's Nothern in 1975 pushed me away from soul

People say Wigan never played the new releases but the audio evidence says that's not correct...I know I've got tapes with Jodi Mathis, I'm Shaft, Disco Connection etc
