No but seriously - it does get my back up a bit because it's being told I must like something or I can't like soul music. I do detest modern soul but it's easy to avoid hearing it. To the chap who said 30 year old records aren't modern soul, yes they are, it's a LABEL/DESCRIPTION for the style of music, not the age of the record. And also to reiterate, I love those early to mid 70's dancers like East Coast Connection, Norma Jenkins, Life, Gentlemen & Their Lady, Marvin Holmes, The Nights, Skullsnaps etc etc, love 'em. Just hate plinky plonky syndrum disco shite

I agree with you Pete, and I've often sided with you on this, on this very forum.

I also hate 'plinky plonky' disco shite. It's not real SOUL and that (your) description is cock on!

But... I reckon there MUST be tunes that are every bit as good as the Marvin Holmes, Life, Skullsnaps etc that weren't discovered during the 'Northern' heyday and that, if you (and others) were to hear them you'd love 'em just as much!

Why do you think people are forcing you to listen to it, driving people off the scene......we do listen to your music. But do you own this music, is it yours!!!!!! This is a soul forum. I for one, was reared on Northern and always will be greatfully for my soul roots.

Pete, I have been somewhere else EMS and found that the only good folk on there are also on here A handfull of true soul folks. Who do seriously appreciate the whole 60's to current day release's. I have been red carded from EMS but leave you and many other with this statement:

"My arse shows no blisters from the EMS slide. I am here to enjoy a more soulfull ride."

I know we say tongue in cheek, 1969 midnight, was the day it all changed , the change was from the raw sound of the 60s to the mushy " Modern " sound of the 70s , and it was around the late 60s to the early 70s ,if you cant tell the differerance from a 60s to a 70s tune .....get your lugholes washed out .... :g:

Was this the crossover(not in that sense :g: ) Not a definitive date more a sound change which wasn't analysed at the time. Just a continuing trend of 'stompers'. Who were the dj's that broke these did they think at the time they were not traditional northern fayre Us punters weren't that bothered :lol: . At that time everyone was like a sponge for more of the like and dj's had to satisfy that craving. If you go into things to deeply(you go up your own arse :P but seriously) These type of northern /new northern/ classic stompers what ever you want to call them were lapped up and not judged. People had no time /inclination to judge----just got on with it :P

This tune is a typical example of when the scene went off the rails a bit,now although its a nice tune,its got no soul at all ,its a modern pop tune, just my opinion of it :)

Bazz that is one of the most ridiculous comments on here yet (and that is saying something). Denise LaSalle has no soul!!!, And you are judging it on its a 70's backing against a 60's forget the f**ck*g voice behind it.

That just shows a gross misunderstanding of soul music (and we are not talking Northern here, you said soul) and to quote your phrase you obviously just don't get it.

I have no issue with people just liking Northern on a 60's basis, but why people with this taste only then preach on what is soul and what is not is just ridiculous. Go and listen to a Denise LaSalle ballad or a Soul Children 70's LP and tell me they are not soul

I am glad I read this backwards or would have had a go at you for earlier statements :)

I don't think many people now have a problem with this Pete, you have argued this view well, I particularly agree with the preaching bit, although like most people when I hear a record I love for the first time, I can be a bit over the top in sharing. I think the view on what is "Northern" also depends on when you came along, I started big time in 79, so 70's records were the norm to me, but not to a lot of the busload going home who would throw things at me for dancing to "newies" (I also dont remember the term Modern Soul from then), not really sure they differentiated about 70's etc.

As to what is a Modern Soul record, its different things to different people, and really if you do know about post 60's stuff, you will expect different kinds of modern depending on DJ/Venue. I do agree with Steve G (again) it seems daft calling 70's records etc Modern, but no dafter in reality than calling the wide selection of music we call Northern.

Each to their own, I just expect a majority of Soul music whereever I go and I will choose the venue depending on what era I want to hear, arguably a good position.

Only last comment is all the "born again" Northerners, many who ironically are now discovering 70's, are now doing to these what they did to 60's oldies and turning them into the records that make you wake up in a cold sweat at the thought of hearing it again.............maybe that will stop them being called Modern!!

Motown 68/69 sounds a whole lot different to the 65/66 stuff Bazza. Funkier. Harder edged to some extent. The broad spectrum changed before 31/12/69 as has been said. Its an arbitary date used solely to present an argument. Why start the thread in the first place btw ?

Also how would you classify N.F. Porters "Keep On Keeping On" and the Fuller Brother's "Time's A Wasting"? I seem to remember buying both of 'em as new releases from Record Corner in the 70's along with First Choice......

I agree with Epic, they were all modern once upon a time & some of the stuff people class as modern now is a least 30+ years old & how modern is that??? My feeling is modern is of today/of the moment & some of it I like but the 8 minute two step repetative stuff I cannot bide but each to their own.

Well thats a bit unfair, I said I disliked "plinky plonky syndrum disco shite" and house music, correct me if I'm wrong, uses synthesised or programmed drums i.e. played by a machine, so it does fall under my category. :lol:

I realised his natural genius when he played a live mix of Serious Intention's "You Don't Know - Remix" and mixed "Chitty Chitty Bang Bang" all the way throughout the long intro and came in beat perfect @ the sweet spot! His gig's were always rockin'!

Where did you catch him Jocko? Were you living down South in the mid-late 80's?

Oh, yeah, I'm digging out those 10 Northern/Modern tracks to post, so that'll be tomorrow 'cos I'm prepping the Sunday's radio show, OK?

But I'm also having to go through the DJ International catalogue for a 3CD 'best-of' so I'm immersed in House this week LOL...

So any hidden killers on DJ International folks? I've found a few already...........

And 'Trouble's' great! He did Classic House Mastercuts 2 which I'm now gonna play for inspiration!
