I was just so Gobsmacked it being on the Main BBC1 news!! :shades:

and after the fantastic job he did with the original play, my money is on Paul Sadot.... :D:wicked:

Phil.

Yes i too agree with Phil K , as i said in my original post Paul did us all proud with the play surley he is a natural choiceif he was willing to do it!!

Is there anyone on here connected with the film world that could point them in the right direction!!

As for the music what the F++k has Amy Shitehouse got to do with Wigan in the 70s and Modfather Weller as far i know didnt go to the place!!

Surely theres millions of tracks to use as the soundtrack/incidental music to choose from the era!! Even Kent had a CD out at the time of Paul S 's Play!!

I agree if Paul S got involved and he had some editorial clout, then it could be quite good.

Big if there.. If as the thread title suggests the film makers are American? No chance, it'll be guy meets girl and the happiest of happy endings and all done in the best possible taste.post-2216-1213721636.gif

Saturday Night Fever was supposed to have been inspired by a trip to Wigan after it was on the front of Billboard (?) mag as the best disco in the world. So SNF comes to Stoke 2008 remake type deal?

From Mod Culture ...

A film about the Wigan Casino is about to start filming...in Stoke. In fairness, the (as yet unnamed) film is about a teenager from Stoke, with the city's Kings Hall will be used to re-create the Wigan Casino.

The film is set in 1974 and stars Martin Compston (who played Liam in Ken Loach's Sweet Sixteen) as Joe McCain, a bored and restless 17-year-old who has never left the confines of Stoke-on-Trent. He meets Jane, who introduces him to Northern Soul and 'a whole world of exciting music and dance he never knew existed'.

No original soundtrack though - it's set to be new versions of northern classics from the likes of Mark Ronson, Paul Weller, and The Dap-Kings. Filming starts in August, with the movie due to premier in Edinburgh, followed by an appearance at Cannes.

Wigan Casino. Why.

Surely they could name another famous respected venue from the past in the Stoke area. Suggestions anybody.

I agree with a few of the comments that as a commercial venture to put bums on seats at the Odeon (or le Odeourn in Cannes) the truth about the rare soul scene will have to be stretched and pop records will have to used and pop Djs will have to be included, and................ OMG thats why its using Wigan Casino to make it as authentic as possible.

Think it's already been said but how the hell can you not use an original sound track? if the film is to be set in 1974, based on the northern scene and use cover versions no matter how good they might be they are not autentic, Quadrophinia had The Who and 60's tracks as a back drop to the Mod culture, a film based on Northern Soul without the very foundation of the cult it's music is a little like celebrating Christmas without the full Christmas Dinner, I had the original treatment of this project a couple of years ago from the production company and it read that original tracks would be used so why the change of heart? I would have thought that an authentic sound track would be paramount?

Original Wigan sounds that could be used.................................

No, Im not going to bite, but:

Superlove, Footsee, My hearts symphony, Nine times out of Ten, Colourman, .....the choice of rare soul is endless. Come on lets not dress it up, WC were the right initials for one of the 'best discos in the world' Not sure if it was ever a Soul Club.

Paul Weller anyday.

IMO the only way this could work with artists like Duffy, Whinehouse etc would be a mix of their songs and the original artists in the correct diegetic context :wicked: . What I mean is that the Diagetic music i.e. that background music that comes out the scene of the story needs to be, without any shred of doubt the original artist. Non diegetic music i.e that doesn't come out of the scene but is edited for narrative effect; external to what is happening in the scene could be provided by Whinehouse and her trendy mob. This approach worked for Quadrophenia with 6ts tracks like Louie Louie playing in the club, as opposed to a 70s Who track when Jimmy's riding his scooter.

If it's just Duffy, Ronson et al then it will be a shambles

I read the script to this film about 3 years ago and it was so bad that i wrote to their funders to complain about its inaccuracies! :D:wicked: . It was a part of the trend aimed at cashing in on the scene. basically a normal boy meets girl sh--te script, pushed into the format of Northern and the Casino. Square peg being hammered into a round hole! Maybe they have made the script better, but it was one of the worst that I have ever read...cringeworthy! Its obviously timed for now, as there is a sort of 60's revival..Winehouse, Duffy, Ronson etc. Unfortunately they seem to have no idea or indeed, dont really care, that its nothing to do with Wigan, the scene or the music. Once again, I would be suprised if PUSS TINSTANLEY isn't in there somewhere, printing shirts and telling the story about the time....blah, blah, blah! . He really couldn't care less how the Casino is portrayed as long as he can keep stringing out a career on it. :P

I hope they don't get that stupid druggie to star in it ..that would be me not even bothering to go see it.

I went to see Once upon a time in wigan and altho I didnt attend wigan it still represented the n/s scene as I knew it.

And gave me a great buzz

I'd want the film to be in the same ilk maybe even following a soulguy/girl around the numerous clubs in the 70's/80's

Did you see the previous offering?

I think Shane Meadows should do an n's story along with Paul S

I think they'd get it right

its all been tried before and nothings ever come close to replicating the casino, wish they,d let sleeping dogs lie before they scramble the memories, with there inevitable own interpretation of events..that are nearly always irrelevent to what it was truly like.

Plenty of people on the scene scramble the memories as well.

I watched "dreamgirls" the other day for the first time

I enjoyed the start of the movie ...but boy oh boy it turned into a pile of drivelling shite at the end ..it didnt know wether it was a musical or not.

I watched Ray when that came out .... I absolutely loved it ..they told his story warts and all ..bought the sound track too

As did I buy Once upon a time in wigans when i went to see that

I want to see "the honeydripper" next to see what thats all about

I would love to see the N'S scene represented as it should be warts and all

And someone further up the thread mentioned sex ...I thought alll those drugs shrunk your pinkle so who was getting any???LOL

Didn't Shane Meadows's film "Once Upon A Time In The Midlands" feature some northern tracks, I seem to remember hearing Bar-B-Que in it, or am I thinking of something else. Agree that if we are going to have a northern film then Shane Meadows is the best person to do it.

Hiya Nige xx

Im bloody marvellous matey hope you are too

I think Shane Meadows is a superb film producer/director ( Paul S should do the artistic direction )

His working class type of film would suit the N/S scene as most of it was made up of working class folks

Ive watched all Shanes movies and they've become cult movies

So I would expect nothing less than and N/S movie with everything told as it was warts and all

Mand :shhh:

Surprisingly Shane Meadows has already made a film called 'Northern Soul' in 2004! It isn't, however, about our favourite music but about a lonely man obsessed with American wrestling (see Shane's web site: https://shanemeadows.co.uk/ under the Shorts drop-down menu).

Yep seen it !

its added to "Dead mens shoes" as a short on the DVD I think ( correct me if I'm wrong Paul S)

But Dead mens shoes is a superb british cult movie well worth watching IMO

C'mon Mr sadot you and Shane Meadows get your heads together and make us a proper movie about N/S!!! Warts and all!!!

I mean.... drug related deaths, robberies , drug taking, fashion trends, sexual encounters, dancing, and the stars ego behaviour, dodgy dealers its got it all
