Crumb
Mark Ronson, Paul Weller, Amy Winehouse, oh dear I actually like these three, especially Weller, but doing Northern covers? No, I'll give that a miss. Besides, I don't think any of these are confirmed yet & with a bit of luck they won't touch this tacky little film with a barge pole. If you read it, I think it actually means that these artists 'HAVE' copied the Northern Soul sounds. I know it say's they've done covers, but that's newspapers for you! Probably just giving an example to the 'great unwashed'. The people responsible seem to have a passion for the music and I'm pretty sure they'll be using proper Northern sounds. It sounds like it could be a good film (imo). Edited June 14, 2008 by Soul-Slider Link to comment Social source share

Soul-slider
What do you mean copied, I dont get you ? reads, covered by Bazza Well, you know, tried to create a 60's soul sound (I do stress 'tried' ). ...."features a pounding soundtrack of Northern Soul classics covered by artists LIKE ....." The way I read it is it's just giving an example of what the music is like (obviously that's open to debate!) and not featuring these artists. Jumpinjoan
Why have I got the feeling that we've been here before From reading that article it sounds to me like the original music is going to be replaced with cover versions. Albeit this time it's Paul Weller as the lead singer instead of the Flying Pickets geezer. But hey ho, give it a chance, live and let live and all that! Bazza
Well, to me it is those great 60' early 70's soul tunes and R&B that made our scene what it is ( or was ), copies, covers, levine type made to measure stuff, just wont cut it ,it will be another farce, just my opinion of course, have been known to be wrong ,I can see why they picked Stoke though.. Can't wait! If they did it right it would bring in more new blood than this pile of shite will. Link to comment Social source share

Reg
To be honest I don't see what the fuss is about. In the case of Once Upon a time in Wigan, I can understand why Paul got cross about the Octagon ripping off his play because they tried to pass it off as a remake when really it was an entirely different watered down "musical" version of OUATIW. However in this case it's just somebody doing a film with its only aim as trying to get a few more people interested which can't be a bad thing really can it? And if these new people are really music fans (and not just pop pickers) they will realise that the original versions are of course superior to the cover versions.... and if they don't then they're not worth bothering about anyway are they? As far as I know these people have never had any involvment in the northern scene & IMO their only aim is to make money, nowt wrong with that, unless they make us a laughing stock with the general public, which I fear they will. As I've said before, the original records are more likely to bring new blood onto the scene than using crap covers. Link to comment Social source share

As I've said before, the original records are more likely to bring new blood onto the scene than using crap covers. Why the paranoia? More likely it will sink without a trace or most of the general public won't even really notice the soundtrack or think anything at all. The soul scene is pretty insignificant in the wide scale of things I think! Anyway Coronation Street have been mentioning NS in a comedy style for a few years now and I still don't think more than 5% of the population have a clue what they're on about.. Nige Brown
I was just eating my lunch watching the news on BBC 1, and they annouced that theres gonna be a Major film all about the Northern Soul scene!!# The flm is set in the 70's aroubd the time of Wigan Casino and apparently filming starts in August and the Kings Hall in Stoke is going to be used as "Wigan Casino" for the indoor filming!! Theres a lot of people who i know will yawn and slag this off , but it will be intesting to see jusy how right they get it!! I went to see the Original play of Paul Sadots "Once Upon a Time " i saw it in Greenwich, which was in my opinion a fantastic attempt to re- create the Scene as it was back then, it so reminded me of meself and Shawy taking him to his first night at Wigan, brought a tear to me eye it did!! So if they det it right like the play did should be really intesting!! Be a right laugh if they have actors playing the original Wigan DJs!! Russ Winsanly --- Timothy Spall ?? Guest in town Mikey
I agree if Paul S got involved and he had some editorial clout, then it could be quite good. I watched 24 hour party people. Having visited the Hacienda many times on Student night when up there, I thought the makers did a jaw droppingly good job of recreating the Hacienda (Even down to the position of the door to the gents). So it can be done. But if it is done it will have to, because pound to a penny it will be analysed and ripped to shreds on here if they set it in 75 say and play something like Cant Get Over These Memories. etc. Link to comment Social source share
