Guest WPaulVanDyk Posted June 16, 2008 Share Posted June 16, 2008 Not a bad selection plus it would be nice to add a few Modern, R & B maybe with the 60's oldies to show how Northern has changed over the years. i would say at least 18 oldies from 60's a few R & B and at least 5 modern tunes. nothing wrong if you add at least something like Drizabone - Pressure but i would add Sam Cooke - Sugar Dumpling aswell cause it's a top Northern tune but also done by a soul legend that maybe they know but not his Northern output my friend who is like 40 she didn't know Sugar Dumpling was Northern soul and yet she told me she loved the track years ago and only thought of it as soul Link to comment Social source share More sharing options...

The CD is great! Jeez, the lyrics are so simple but really honest and raw - and even when they're tragic they're toe tapping. It's amazing! Plain words that really get to the core of an emotion or situation is such a skill... And then there's awesome musicianship on top of it - bloody hell! Thank you! I know full well they are not oldies to someone who hasn't heard them but the list isn't a true reflection of the northern soul scene. There's nothing in there that list genuinely reflect the discoveries made in the stafford era, records from this era are very promoinent in many dj's playlists/sets. Don't get me wrong the cd is an excellent list of tracks for someone who doesn't know the scene at all but the original post said the list reflects the different aspects of the soul scene when it doesn't. I found it quite hard to express so many differnt sounds in 25 songs.. if you put a real mix on .. the person hearing it for the first time would not really get a taste of the music as it would change to much.. and then you would have to explain it to them.. where as I thought give them a taster first.. then the next CD I give them would be more open minded with a couple of new releases even.. so then they would understand how it all fits in.. by the way the person who I gave the Cd to yesterday as asked if I have any more.. and asked where there are clubs she could go to!!! my job is done.. You could easilky knock up a cd with say 15 wigan and earlier and 15 from the 80's to nowadays discoveries (60's that is). There's enough wigan type oldies mentioned already so here's 15 from me, all easily available via cyberspace which represent the last 20 years IMHO. But it sure does reflect most aspects of Northern Soul is, doesn't it? Even though I like Northern Soul with all its niches, be they R&B/crossover/beat ballads/nu soul/soulful dance, whatever, if an "outsider" asks me for a CD about Northern Soul, 90% of my picks would be from the NS Top 500. Looks like a Brighouse Ritz playlist. I know where you all coming from, and they are not oldies to someone who knows nothing, etc, but... If they go out expecting to hear these tunes, it will be to an oldies night and they could get stuck in that rut. Include a few that are not typical oldies nite fodder, so when they don't hear 'em out, they might enquire as to why?. This may then broaden their horizon somewhat. I know there is an old saying that goes "Familiarity breeds contempt" But I disagree. I think its more a case of "Familiarity equals Comfort Blanket" Â The majority of people like what they know, want to hear what they know, go where they know with who they know. That is why the oldies/nostalgia scene florishes. Start someone off down that road without an alternative view........ A couple of stories on the same line Mischief, a guy I work with who is a self confessed rock nut has just come back from holiday where he told me one night at the hotel that he was staying at 3 American guys who were masquerading as a Jackie Wilson tribute group were the entertainment he said to me " Kev, I couldn,t sit f-----g still, that music is awesome, I danced all night". On another occasion many moons ago, the football team That I played for played a game in Sheffield which was about a 2-3 hour trip for us we stayed after the game for a session (as you do) on departure at 11-30 I produced a tape that someone had given me at a niter and gave it to the bus driver to stick on, within 10 minutes the volume was at full blast and the bus practically rocked from one side of the motorway to the other all of the way back to Aycliffe and out of about 30 people on the bus I was the only one who frequented soul venues. It's very similar to the stuff I was given when I didn't know what northern was. I still believe the oldies are the best and that's why they were picked up and became massive the first time round. Very rarely do I hear new 6T's stuff that has the quality of many 'oldies'. And as a starting point, it's perfect. If you give a newbie a load of newer stuff or niter stuff, I think you'll lose them from the start. Be better if Gene Toones was on there though.. lol.. We could all gogo on about adding this or that, yet there is quality in there and enough catchy stuff to get even the most decerning of ears to listen to at least some of the stuff. One thing i will add, is it would be nice to give a neutral, this c.d and another c.d with rarer soul-RnB tunes on it, to see which they preferred??? without being poisoned by traditional "northern" first. There was 2 books well technically 3 but if you actually look at the first book and the 3rd revised one you notice entries have changed. Sam Cooke - Sugar dumpling was only in the revised update book so if you using the first top 500 book is that correct when the 3rd one has some different choices in it. The CD is great! Jeez, the lyrics are so simple but really honest and raw - and even when they're tragic they're toe tapping. It's amazing! Plain words that really get to the core of an emotion or situation is such a skill... And then there's awesome musicianship on top of it - bloody hell! Thank you! Made me feel quite good about the love we have of our music... bri phill Posted July 16, 2008 Share Posted July 16, 2008 This is a great subject and giving someone a cd of totally whats being played at allniters now would be a complete waste of effort because the tunes alone wouldn't hook them in they haven't got the quality of the original tunes what got people hooked un 60/70's. That would be like giving a cd with what's big at the moment in 1975 at Wigan or in 1970 whats big at the Twisted Wheel or the Catacombs or in 72 the Mecca or the Torch. All these cd's would lack pure quality because the original sounds will take some beating the scene would never have got off the ground with what's played now. What I mean by that a cd for new comers should have at least 50% classics to help introduce newcomers because thats what they beleive northern soul is.ie a cd for newcomers in1972 would contain Twisted Wheel classics etc.1975 would contain Twisted Wheel Catacombs Torch etc. I know we all have our own opinions what are classics most of them are probably judged at the point when we entered the scene which is normal . I also know forward thinking dj's will want to push the new discoveries forward that's right and natural for allniter regulars but not for new comers.New comers will need a bit more gentle breaking in and even old comers,so back to the cd it needs both old and only the very best of the new because most of the new will be forgotten in a year,history tells us this. This is not a personal go at new sounds I personally would prefer to hear new with a sprinkling of classics,there's nothing better than hearing a great new sound but for a cd to intoduce people a DEF NO NO. There's nothing in there that list genuinely reflect the discoveries made in the stafford era, records from this era are very promoinent in many dj's playlists/sets. There's little in the list that reflects the crossover and modern scenes either.. good point chalky,although that list is ok,if we're gonna talk about peoples perspective it looks like it's been compiled from just an oldies perspective.What about things like robert tanner,mello souls,the earls,arthur willis,king moses and many others,what i'm saying l guess it maybe needs to be a bit more across the board years wise....atb Tezza Link to comment Social source share More sharing options...

As Bri Philips mentions if this was done in the early 70's then dead easy almost all classics and more importantly when these newbies went out to get their first fix of northern they would be guaranteed to hear them. Then they could move on eventually to whatever floats their boat. How about a bit of reverse psychology here. Give em a cd with current niter big hitters, Butch c/ups, Soul Sam obscurities,rarities etc etc. Then when they do go out , imagine the joy on their faces when they hear something 'new to them. For example they've heard the current 'upfront' stuff then somewhere someone puts on williams and watson---too late Wow that would blow there socks off like it did first time round for others. Then the next week they went out and heard say A little togetherness and perhaps johhny Sayles. And so on and so on. This way much joy every time they went out cos they can't be shielded from oldies forever and they would be rushing around at do's saying 'WTF this? Startled soulies explaining to them its only epitome of sound etc etc So really its getting in to the Northern scene now and then working backwards It might work.................................................. Then later learning about earlier sounds from other venues long gone if they stick around long enough. Did any of us start by only listening to what was popular ten years earlier? I didn't. Imagine being a newcomer at Stafford and someone saying 'here's a tape from Wigan 1974, this is Northern Soul...' No good starting them off with a load of 'oldies' (oldies to us i mean) because all they will do is seek out the venues that play those tunes and all we will have done is support the oldies scene.
