Unfortunately we won't be doing the 300 mile round trip - we are church mice at the moment. sad.gif

we'll see you at Pete's do x x Karen & Rob

Have big fun guys!

Travelling is a bit of a must if you're a Kent soulie.

Top marks Rob for giving John Alden a well deserved break.

Or alternatively how about sorting out the wood from the chaff DJ wise?

With the all new handy DJ grading system!

It works like this:-

'A' DJ's - £5000+ rarities only

'B' DJ's - £4000+ rarities only

'C' DJ's - £3000+ rarities only

and so on until

'Z' DJ's - Badly scratched and/or warped Wigan's Ovation, Muriel Young and Joey Dee records only

Hey Rob, I just had a great idea!

With 450 DJ's on here all raring to go, why bother with actual punters, when you can have the ultimate.........

NORTHERN SOUL DJ SOUNDCLASH!

Invite all 450 DJ's to the next do, they can play a record each, so it'll work out like this:-

450 DJ's x 2.5 minutes (average length of a Northern Soul record) = 1125 minutes divided by 60 minutes = 18.75 hours.

So do an All-Dayer & All Nighter, invite the Guinness Book Of World Record people down, charge each DJ a tenner apiece for the publicity they'll reap by being involved in such a record-breaking event and bob's yer uncle!

So that way all A,B & Z DJ's get to play, you pocket a quick £4,500 and there's no need for any actual customers!

This could revolutionise things entirely.

Punters? Pah. Who needs 'em when you have 450 DJ's!

Ian D

id be up for this as z listed dj but do i get my petrol from notts lol laugh.gif

Saw the "calling all promoters" thread and already had this in my mind.

As a co-promoter of a large event (Bridlington) I was looking around at DJ s for some inspiration keeping away from "Big Names" to use as a change.

I used Soul-Source Event guide to jog my memory, loking for people I may have forgot.

The thing that struck me was the number of events that are running with "Resident DJs Tom, Dick and Harry with guest DJ Fred from behind the drainpipes soul club (where we will be the guests next time).

Now I keep my ears to the ground (I know they are BIG enough !) and have a good feel for the scene being around long enough to remember the times when events were thin on the ground.

What struck me most was the scenario that you hear people bulling up their own or mates Gigs and when you actually attend there are only 30 or so people there. they keep them running month in ,month out playing Oldies , or run of the mill sounds that you can hear anywhere.

Now thats not having a go at people who are leading the way trying to do something different The Attic is a prime example, where the resident djs Kev, dean & Steve, garry DJs are now getting booked as guests at other venues on MERRIT as they have slogged away for 2 years following what they believe in, good on ya lads!

So my long winded point is, due to the "creit crunch, pertrol prices, higher mortgage rates, negative equity Etc" When is the point where the scene reaches MORE DJs THAN PUNTERS and what happens when it happens, because at this rate we'll run out of Punters faster than we're running out of oil. by the way if you search these pages you can compile a list of at least 450 "DJs" A list, B list, c list and Z minus list !!

By the way I did locate some DJs for Bridlington and I have my own list of "name" DJs I have not used yet who can do the business

Rob Wigley

If people are not well off, then they stay in their local area. Fuel costs etc just add to this situation.

The Soul Scene is just like the Scooter Rally Scene, which has become very regional again !

Yes the hardcore will always make the effort but for the rest of local soulfans and scooterfans in the towns, the local Soul event is a change from the pub !

And long may we be allowed to do what we want to do in our own towns !!!!

And If the local talent has more than a passing intrest other than the obvious northern oldies, then all is good IMHO

Yes that is very true, there has always been a local "sub-culture", it used to be guys buying EMI Discs and bringing them back from the all-nighters to play at local mid-week youth club events round our way. Not evryone has traveled, can travel or needs to travel. But if you are going to do it locally do it with style and above all lead don't follow

Last time i Heard her out Jo Wallace played a £5.00 tune I'd never heard before that was excellent and plenty of people danced to it.

I'ts not about money imo, its about knowledge and style and some DJ's have it like Ms Wallace and others dont.

Some DJ's rely on their big money tunes and don't try hard enough to please the floor.

For me it doesn't matter how much ya collections worth, it's how the set is put together that counts. Anyone with the money can spin rarity after rarity, but it don't make 'em a good DJ. This is the main reason why I stopped spinning many moons ago. Always seems to be more dj's than punters at most do's, even back in the 80's and early 90's. Guys were spending fortunes trying to replicate what Sam and Ian Clark were playin', instead of tryin' to break somethin' new or different, and bring their own identity to a set. It seemed to be back then that people on the scene were dj's first and collectors second, and it should be the other way round, with many playin' tunes 'cos they were big, not necessarily 'cos they were any good. Probably why I only ever did early doors sets, but there ya go, rather play what I liked to 20 people, than Lew Kirton "Heaven.........." or Bill Harris "Am I Cold........", every week! Just my personal experience, and a long time ago, but it doesn't seem to have changed. I could be wrong, I often am.........!

Les, you're not wrong,

I went to Burnley last night, no "Lew Kirton Heaven.......... or Bill Harris, Am I Cold......."

The music all night was amazin' (in my humble blah blah blah and all that stuff) rare uptempo and all that stuff, sets were well put together, Tedsoul/Guest DJ knocked us all out! (collector first?) Cliff, Karl, Fred, Phil (collectors)

Sounds great doesn't it?

numbers were down for some reason / clash of venues?

There are a lot of good collections on the n Wales coast. Kev Jones has the records as mentioned previously.

well obviously cos the latter would be ludicrous ..... you won't get many who will call themselves dj's, theres no pressure on a collector y'see if they can't or don't do the business , you call yourself a dj a you better be able to back it up (hence the big balls comment)

Thats about right smile.gif Not too sure about this A-Z list thingy. Bit too much like celebrity worship to me. There already is a grading system in place ---its called the dancefloor

Moving from dj's there seems to be an increasing trend to the grading of punters  From upfront and knowledgeable crowd down to handbagger/baggies brigade . With all this talk of diminishing attendances would all 'types of punters be welcome regardless. After all they all pays their money :D just a thought....

I'm afraid that's just a cowards way out. If you are going to make accusations like this you should either name names or not bother making the accusation at all.

OK you've said it isn't me, I knew that anyway, but it still leaves the other 10 DJs on at Rugby under your cloud of suspicion, and having accusations like that made can affect whether you get future bookings. OK, I can see you would think that the person you are talking about shouldn't get any more bookings, but what about the other nine whose reputations you have clouded and muddied with your accusations ????

If you are positive in what you are saying, and can back it up with more than hearsay, whispers, and rumours, I won't call you anything other than an honest man with the courage of his convictons.

Can you really? Why don't you name names then Rob? I reckon the Z list DJs would be interested to hear your opinion of them.

There are only good DJs and bad DJs not some bullshit hierarchy. Funny how people come on here generally slagging off 'some' promotors, 'some' venues and 'z list' DJs but are always vague about specific individuals. I wonder why?

you know who they are.......have a long think who do you know of who...A. ONLY ATTENDS HIS VENUE AND/OR ONLY ATTENDS HIS MATES VENUE ...WHEN DJING.Other than that they go NOWHERE to support and enjoy this scene and whats more if their venue folded they would'nt bother at all.How do we know this hearsay? no....their actions to date.

I have to agree with Mossy, I like to go to local dos as I've got young kids and babysitters are like gold dust....and on the occasional night I do get to go out I don't want to drive and sit there nursing an orange juice all night. Unfortunately there aren't that many great nights that near to me-even the Greatstone is a £20 taxi fare away so consequently I just don't get out much at all.

It's okay for folks with a mass of disposable income cos the kids have grown up to travel all over the country whilst pontificating how superior they are for being so committed but for some people a local night fits their circumstances and if that's a couple of guys in a pub with their mates then what's wrong with that. I can assure you I've been to a lot of little nights in pubs in Manchester over the years-The Black Lion that Joan and co used to run, nights run by Steve Cato,Darks,Alan,Chris and Carlos' Taste of Honey that have played music as good as or better than any all niter.

So put that in your pipe and smoke it....

I just wanted to point out (and Rob it wasn't replying to you to be honest but to a serial pontificator on here with a secret taste in Jane Austen..if only he looked like him...but I digress....) that sometimes little nights run by collectors are great and the soul scene nowadays is not like it used to be when everybody was 18 and wanting to stay out all night. There are many different types of people with different circumstances on here (Mossy and I both have young families for example) and what suits some of us may not suit the rest. Don't get me wrong I do go to the occasional all niter and haven't missed a Prestatyn or Cleggy for quite a few years but local nights are a godsend to me. And yes I agree I am pretty lucky where I live - I will be nipping over the M60 to the Bury Allniter next week to see Keith Money  There's definitely no pipe smokers at that great friendly venue I can tell you

Cheers M'dear!.. you're not on your own either, I'm glad I'm based in Manchester. We've got the best NS area in the country!. :shades:

I know we're all skint etc but there are certain things in life people always try and find the time / money for and northern soul is one of them. Doesn't matter how skint some people have been or how little income there is, fags and booze always play in a part if you're a smoker ,etc and the northern scene maybe that addicition for others.

A night out is the little reward for many for all their hard work, or comfort in hard times. People will still want nights out and a break from constantly making the books balance and the stress of it. Local nights are the only option here due to the fuel cost.

This might, of course, be a load of old cack... I'm undecided.

"DJs" A list, B list, c list and Z minus list !!

I think this is a bit unfair..

B and C and so on.. are these the Dj's that keep the scene going around the country, the so called warm up dj's the ones that dj to a room of sometimes less than 20 people.

are they the dj's that spend on average £50 - £100 for a 45 do a one hour set and get thier petrol money?

I think the problem isn't the B list, C list dj's etc..

Its the so called promoter dj' the ones that only give spots to other promoter dj's so they get a spot back.. this makes all the do's the same.. also promoters that don't travel never here new dj's..

I think this has become more of a problem on our scene and why there are so many do's on now... i think this is the only way some dj's get thier spots...

Me I buy mine any one want to take a bribe PM me :wicked:

Indeed! No one will ever agree on this anyway. Whats the problem, as has already been stated repeatedly on this thread, if you don't like it don't go! Also everyone knows that theres 10 or 12 top DJs that will get you whipped into a frenzy on the dancefloor every time but, and God forbid that this happens anytime soon, these DJs will at some point retire otherwise they'll be using the basket on their mobility scooters to cart their records up to the decks. I mean that with the upmost respect obviously! :D As someone has pointed out, the scene will need DJs to take over the reigns ar some point. Heaven knows they won't match Butchs unknown, unsung acetates or Bob Hinsleys knack of being able to turn a night around but they need to start somewhere IMO of course!

lets set up a 'DJ police' - it can be a division of the 'soul police', you know, those who go around telling people whats crap to listen to and what isnt, they could expand by telling people which dj's to boycott.

oops, sorry - suddenly realised they already exist

posted in good humour

I've heard that the DJ police training acadamy has some available spots!

Somebody would only set up a rival night, and the Dj's would be back and forth Playing a track at each.

pmsl! :lol::thumbup:

There's nowt wrong with £50 to £100 records? There's more better records in that price range than some of the £1000 plus records some of the so called top dj's play. It takes more imagination to DJ on a limited budget than to throw money at it and I for one would sooner hear a DJ who uses his (or her) imagination and not just his wallet/cheque book.

 Put me at the bottom of the list with a £20 cheapie that no has played for a while (and certainly not that night) and I'll be happy .

Damn i've succumbed to Rob's system..
