Rob Wigley Posted June 17, 2008 Author Posted June 17, 2008 well i wouldn't pack it in, i have records and dad has records which i put together and if anyone in Peterborough does ask me to DJ i do. i have done city club in past and a pub but could do more in pubs cause we like these as just something for a bit of fun I'd give you chance Paul, but I want to hear you Djing first, or if you were coming to Bridlington you can start in the 3rd room playing what you like as long as its original and different. There you go Rob ps Don't tell Ken
Spacehopper Posted June 17, 2008 Posted June 17, 2008 keep with it paul..while ive got nothing against 65 year olds djing(im in bristol, home of the famous reggae dj derek, god knows how old he is now and still doin womad etc) i would love to see a youngster behind the decks......maybe this new soul film about wigan will help....
Guest Posted June 17, 2008 Posted June 17, 2008 (edited) Won't there be any younger DJ's like i would like to DJ more and cause i am only 27 i have plenty of years left to keep it going but you don't seem to see a lot of people like me DJing it's all about the ones who have been around years and know more about the music Dont even go there!.. another issue for another day surely.. It's ageism in reverse, the scene is rife with it. You have to serve a minimum of a 20 year apprentiship before most people will even give young DJ's a chance. Most younger people sod it off and get a life, too much bullsh!t, so they tell me..... Come and find me in another 35 years, we'll open a massive Northern Soul care home, stick 'em all in there and force them to listen to the younger DJ's who get over looked today!. Jayne.x. Guest Posted June 17, 2008 Posted June 17, 2008 Good point, I'd been DJing for 13 years by the time I got to your age, 7 years learning the craft Then running my own event (Tudor Barn, playing across the board and cutting edge with guests proper A listers Soul Sam, Richard Searling, Arthur Fenn and great local collector djs like Rob Marriot, Chris Marriott and Richard Broughton) As I said earlier in this thread I'd gladly give a chance to younger DJs of the right calibre with Original records doing something good but a little different. The last 2 guys I can fit in to this category are Chris Anderton (hello Chris ) who ran Bretby and created a whole new fashion for records like Jimmy Soul Clark Champion" (then a £4 ex soul pack record) and recently James Trouble (hello James ) . I can't wait till the Kids discover the music again, prehaps they should re-make "Quadrophenia" and get a whole new generation into it. by the way, go to the European weekenders if you want to see the young generation dancing to Soul music club 18 to 25 and Well into it !! Rob One man's A lister is another man's B lister though.. And who can say what ' the right calibre' is for these young DJ's?... Is that like the Northern Soul version of X Factor?... Jayne.x

THIS YEARS BEST DJ--TATS, MY OTHER FAVE'S INCLUDE, CLIFF STEELE, ROB KAYE & DEN MaC, DAVE WELDING, MOLLY, SEAN HAMPSEY. STEVE HOBBS......and about 100 others! MOST PROMISING NEWCOMER-- SOUL SAM rob

Surely a very large percentage of all events are DJ's starting their own gigs up in that way?.... In fact, I'm struggling to think of many DJ's especially very well known ones aka a-listers who have never at some time been promoters. I think it's a good think that DJ's / promoters have a good understand of what needs to be each other's priorities Jayne.x.

Guest Posted June 18, 2008 Posted June 18, 2008 (edited) You need to get out more ! Rob Quality When I am as old as you and the little ones are all grown up, I will be out and about again !! I used to really love the 100 club, Bradford Queens Hall etc in the 80s and I attended your Keele events every time in your first year - even travelling up from london and back for one night was not a problem. But that was a another life, before moving up here to Wales and starting family life. The love of collecting continues and our local events are rewarding for me. Expecially pulling in the local Scooter lot and everyone enjoying new sounds !!!! No I don't (can't) get out far these days due to my little family life. But I have been an ardent nighter goer in the past, and the love of Soul music remains, as does collecting it ! So if putting on local events makes me a Z list - BUY ME THE BIG Z BADGE ! NOW...........Lets get back to your comments about my Scooter and the gear in Rhyl ........... How rude! It was you that put on Keel was it not ? I am terrible with names ! JimK Posted June 19, 2008 Posted June 19, 2008 I'm proud to call missen a z-list artist. I ran a thread a while ago about playing 30 mins on a limited budget. The tracks you all suggested were superb and go to show that, really, Northern needn't be such an expensive way of life. OK so I mainly dj scooter rallies but have also done a few Northern venues. When I pack my box up I hope that I've tried my best to inspire, safe in the knowledge that if the punter likes the track he can probably get hold of it (if he searches hard enough). Up tempo but danceable was the advice Dukesy gave me and I follow that! If in doubt (as I heard at Prestwich ....... play an oldie
Rob Wigley Posted June 20, 2008 Author Posted June 20, 2008 Just looked on here...whats this thread about?? paul , its a tale about people to be claiming to be "Z" list DJs, a term that was invented by error as a off the cuff remark, in the course of a week and 5,000 hits later we have more z list Djs than A list Djs. I lost the plot on page 3. i must say to all the people claiming to be Z listers, that none of you qualify a) because you're not paying bootlegs or EMIs you know what you're talking about c) your not really running your own do's trying to become noticed I thought the thread had run its course by Thursday, but if you can't pick it up Paul the question was "Are there more DJs than punters?", the answer is "No, not at the moment, but unless things change there will be" two final bits, No one"owns" the scene though many have tried, so you make of it what suits you, if its listening to the Top 500 then thats fine, or if you want ultra rare stuff then thats fine as well. Enjoy yourself and have a good time and I think there may be an opening for a play here Paul , you could call it "Once upon a night onSoul Source or "revenge of the Z listers" Rob ps Loved your play, very observant and the Z listers don't actually releaise they are Z listers national wink day

sister dawn Posted June 21, 2008 Posted June 21, 2008 Well it would appear that Lincoln has now been subjected to the ''wannabes'' and lost another long established and well respected night now in the form of Ad-Lib, a venue which for the past six years has played the very best of club and 6ts soul and RnB. The persons concerned haven't bothered about clashing with dates, they bypassed that by booking Ad-Libs venue for regular nites of similar sorts of music to that of Ad-Libs music policy!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Ezzie Brown Posted June 21, 2008 Posted June 21, 2008 i suggest everyone soulfully inclined living nearby ,makes an effort to attend the soul night that started first..............................if only to show the thoughtless ,or misguided or uninformed new promoters that its better to have 2 good nights out seperatley rather than 2 crap ones on the same night!!!!!!!!!!!!! i have tried to be tactful for a change ezzie

Yea I know, I have been talking to Glenn about it and it seems as though they just stabbed him in the back and nicked the venue of an established event Very underhand in my opinion
Ezzie Brown Posted June 21, 2008 Posted June 21, 2008 i think something similar has or was planned[ soul nite at eisting venue, with same music policy, aimed at same crowd] in gloucester.......wannabbees they are......and will remain ez
Guest Gina Posted June 21, 2008 Posted June 21, 2008 Saw the "calling all promoters" thread and already had this in my mind. As a co-promoter of a large event (Bridlington) I was looking around at DJ s for some inspiration keeping away from "Big Names" to use as a change. I used Soul-Source Event guide to jog my memory, loking for people I may have forgot. The thing that struck me was the number of events that are running with "Resident DJs Tom, Dick and Harry with guest DJ Fred from behind the drainpipes soul club (where we will be the guests next time). Now I keep my ears to the ground (I know they are BIG enough !) and have a good feel for the scene being around long enough to remember the times when events were thin on the ground. What struck me most was the scenario that you hear people bulling up their own or mates Gigs and when you actually attend there are only 30 or so people there. they keep them running month in ,month out playing Oldies , or run of the mill sounds that you can hear anywhere. Now thats not having a go at people who are leading the way trying to do something different The Attic is a prime example, where the resident djs Kev, dean & Steve, garry DJs are now getting booked as guests at other venues on MERRIT as they have slogged away for 2 years following what they believe in, good on ya lads! So my long winded point is, due to the "creit crunch, pertrol prices, higher mortgage rates, negative equity Etc" When is the point where the scene reaches MORE DJs THAN PUNTERS and what happens when it happens, because at this rate we'll run out of Punters faster than we're running out of oil. by the way if you search these pages you can compile a list of at least 450 "DJs" A list, B list, c list and Z minus list !! By the way I did locate some DJs for Bridlington and I have my own list of "name" DJs I have not used yet who can do the business Rob Wigley EMMMMMMMMM.... why stick with the same brilliant old timers, when you get up and coming djs with a fresh approach on the scene, bring em on what is wrong with new djs? if they are good they will progress if there crap they will sell their records .
