Just reading through a few threads and the old memory gland starts twitching, thats memory not mammory so got to thinking about the brilliant alldayers at the Palais Nottingham during the mid 70's. Anyone remember the red setees round the dancefloor?

Used to travel from Peterborough and never missed one, bloody fantastic. Now living in Australia and was wondering what happened to the place. Anyone who went i would love to hear from you. Stay soulful, Tony E.

the old palias kept on going right up till around 2002 , over the years they had nighters in the mid 80's as well they somewhat changed the decor around this time the d.j box was moved to the right side of the floor the stage was demolished and replaced by a bar as was the clockroom the floor was reduced and put on two levels and as for the bali hi well that was totally unrecognisable the place holds great memories for me as i d.jd there in the late 70's and 80's te last time i went to my home town the old place was boarded up and the old globe on the roof was no more a very sad sight to see

Yep Steve know what you mean mate. I clearly remember going downstairs to the then Jazz Funk room, was it a revolving floor?? Sad to know the stage was replaced by a bar of all things, i remember the bar being to the right of the dancefloor as you walked in, certainly had a few lager shandies there. Loved the bogs right near the entrance and they alway's smelled of Brut..... Brilliant memories and i can still smell it if i think hard enough. Were some great dancers there and the girls, well what else can you say, other than the friendliest on the planet. Will consign them day's to the memory box. Tony E.

I went to my first ever All Dayer, which happened to be at The Palais, in Sep 1976. Vividly remember Lindburgh II "Toulouse" playing as I paid my money to get in. Can also see my brother dancing to The Skullsnaps "i'm Your Pimp" in a dance competition on the same day. I attended many times over the next years (Dayers and Niters) and like the above I'll always have very many happy memories of the famous Palais.

now you're talking, my old stomping ground. Anyone remember seeing Junior Walker there on what i think was the 100th all dayer? believe it or not I still have that little button badge you got for going somewhere. My mate Shelley jumped up on stage with him and was dancing as Junior blasted out 'I Aint Going Nowhere'. brilliant memories of years gone by

Always remember Steve dancing away in his very unique way and those trousers! and Brian Rae hammering out Davis and Tyler's Hold on, help is on the way followed by robert knight's branded - what a venue!

The manager (Mike?) used to do a 15 min spot as well usually playing poppy stuff like Love on a mountain top and there's a pain in my heart - remember that anyone lol? that was the time to have a walk around the record sellers.

This really was my favorite place in the world! feeling all sad and nostalgic now.....used to catch the train from Kettering up to the dayers until the boyfriend was old enough to drive.....oh so many years ago...the red setees, the wonderful dancefloor the very posh "ladies boudoire" with all those mirrors, just to remind you how rough you looked in the early hours of the morning, also remember them serving the best burgers in the world downstairs too lol. remember one christmas our mate Herman nicking the chrismas tree from the wimpy up the road and trying to get in with it on his head - strangely it didnt work - Has anyone got any photos of the Palais (inside or out) they seem to be very few and far between and i would love to see some.

Ain't got any piccies Debs but my mate in the U.K. has still got all the tapes we made on one of them old cassette recorders. We used to set it up by the stage and then go and dance our rocks off. Alway's loved queing to get in, specially when it was freezing cold as everyone was so friendly. Never be another venue quite like it, i reckon in it's own way it was as good as the Casino. 600 soulies clapping to ' a little bit hurt ' ooh i can see it now. Makes the hairs stand up don't it? Best record for me there was Epitome of Sound, still got my copy. Getting soulful down under nowaday's, GREAT. ktf Tony E.

Yeah, I was his 'Best Man', but I was so nervous I think I did a real crap job of it! Didnt really know too many people there as I'd been off the scene for a while, so felt really self-concious. Flayyered that Phil asked tho, so had to honour that.

Havent heard from him recently....you ?

My first ever proper soul event the Palais - December 1978 :wicked: Remember the Manager chap having some banter with the punters whilst queuing, tongue in cheek stuff like if you ain't got clean shoes you ain't coming in.

Loved the dayers and some of the nighters although they thinned out around 81 onwards to a couple of 100 punters. Also saw the Ric Tic Review here. Sometimes used to bow out early though and get the bus to a few punk gigs at Jacksdale Topper :P

Went to loads of em Circa 75-76-77. whether under the guise of East Midlands or West Midlands Soul Club :) After Wigan or Clee used to have a few beers either at Tavern in Town or The Fountain  Sure the doors opened at 2. In those days used to hang with John Poole, Nev Wherry (Rip) Tony Elson, Mick Gordon, Steve Harding, The Garnetts Tony and Lee (think he won 1or 2 Dance Comps) Couple of Macs from LE and many more

Remember the Dancefloor jammed solid and bouncing like a trampoline to Lloyd Michaels- The Flasher

Sure Kev Roberts even bought the guy on stage and Inroduced him to the paying public

Wonderful place !

being a youngster, myself  😄,    I  did'nt start going until early 78.    But i never missed a single event after that,  until '83.      a lot of time spent in this fabulous venue,   Funkin' for jamaica ,  downstairs,  Stompin upstairs.  Whistles,  water pistols (remember the bag searches?).  Frank Wocko telling tales of old, whilst waiting in the Queue.     seeing a guy in a dress, in the foyer toilets and realising he was from my home town !  🤨

fabulous memories,      i seem to recall the seats in the area front left of stage, were Green , not red ?

Posted

First went late 74 early 75 you still had to wear a tie to get through the doors we would pass them out the toilet window to anyone who didn't have one lol. Yes the seats were green the dj both to the left originally. Then they moved it centre stage late 79 ish. It moved again in the 90,s to the right hand side of the dance floor. The rotating floor in the bali hi remained until the late 90,s  dj there from 83 till 88 in the bali hi Saturday night session I ran prior to then going Stafford via taxi lol. Good old days.

Posted

I remember the DJ booth being to the left of stage (as you looked at it) .   I also remember KR doing his bank hol sunday nights,  with the DJ's being halfway down RH side ,  in the late 90's .

on a side note,   i was talking to a friend last night, ref Palais people.    i mentioned i only remember two Nottingham faces from that time.   one is the kamikaze dancer,   who is still out n about (Dont know his name,  bald, wears a vest and a beer towel on his head, when he sweats), the other was yourself Steve .   .......

Nice interview with Jon here, I realised how much his long hair influenced others :)

The last time I knew he was events organiser at Hardwick Hall Hotel. Sedgefield, Co. Durham,

He was "still" trying to track down the illusive (if exists at all) 12 " white Demo US Promo copy of the O'Jays "I l Love Music" from all those years ago.....Top Man indeed

Sorry about posting that twice. I think it was either 1974 or 75, probably 75, though I'm not sure. I hope it brings back a few memories for some of you.

Just checked & Easter Sunday 30th March was definitely 1975
