Ben Brown is a great version, I actually prefer that one, not for the vocals which are obviously way inferior but I really like the arrangement. I think I was the first person ever to discover/review this record, way back in Beatin Rhythm issue 1...

I once got two of these out of the same box in a shop in Sussex and both of them had the original TESCO 10p stickers on the sleeve. I can vaguely remember that tescos used to have these massive round bins completely full of records - mainly red Atlantics!

Hi Pete

Ah yes, those bargain bins, Happy Days.

However;

I remember a Doncaster Market Stall with Red Atlantics,

they had a Red Chinagraph X Across the label.

A few copies of "Fireman" very early 70's, I didn't realise it's value at the time., AND I didn't buy one single copy.

That's the way it goes, you win some you lose some.

It was the stall of Peter Hall Roger , which , as you know , was a veritable goldmine for records - and several of us did buy VR from him / it :P .........

Dave, your memory is getting the better of you mate! biggrin.gif . You heard it at my place!! The track was cut for possible use in a UK film which featured Tommy Steele. The text on the demo that was cut refers to Tommy Steele, although its not known for sure if he sang on it or if it is just a reference that the song was to be used by his character.

There was, I believe, some debate about using one or two 'contemporary' songs in the film but they were eventually decided against. I think the money that would have been payable to Jobette may have been a factor as well.

I can't make up my mind if the singer is TS or not. If so, his voice could rival that on some of Jerry Fullers soul outings!!

With regard to Peter Hall's record stall on Doncaster market, David Hall and his wife Carol ( the business was originally from Selby , started by PH , David's father ) were there one week , and the next week it had gone , replaced by a sportswear stall : gutted does not enter into it ........

I never got an answer as to why they had called it a day at Doncaster , just that they had sold up to concentrate on their Selby based shop / activities . strange , as the Doncaster stall was quite a thriving business , especially on a Tuesday , when this was the day for the new stock of imports , and on Friday and Saturdays .........

Seemingly , they decided to close their long established Selby shop shortly after Doncaster as well ( I think it was in 1976 ) , returning - unannounced , and without letting their old regular punters that they were doing so - several weeks after they had closed Selby , to Doncaster market with what remained of the combined record stock , selling it / everything out of carboard boxes at very cheap / knockdown prices : again I was gutted , as I did not know until the dastardly deed was done ..........

Awesome spine tingling brilliance. There is another version, beach music version by The Counts I think, quite rare, the last copy I saw or heard was John Phillips copy.

When the Invitations came over in 2005

Robert "Bob" Blanding did a version of "Ask the lonely" in the set, it was totally awsome

when ever I speak to him i ask him when he's going to record it !!

Although Motown always credit it to Tommy Good, he always maintains that it is NOT him. Doesn't remember recording it either. Probably a white guy though - favourite is Deke Richards. Best version IMHO is by the guy who wrote it - Ivy Jo Hunter.
