However I think the "love that dare not speak it's name" gets slagged so often because of the nostalgia scene and people that refuse to move on.(Mostly from folks who left the scene after WC and now want to turn back time) My new, tolerant persona says "Well if thats what they want to do, fine!" Guest mel brat Posted June 2, 2008 Posted June 2, 2008 (edited) I STILL READ REALLY NASTY AND CONDESENDING REMARKS ABOUT THE CASINO, CANT FOR THE LIFE OF ME FIGURE THIS OUT!!... ...WHEN I WAS 15... You've answered your own question. 20+ year-old Soul folk in late '74-75 were understandably somewhat bemused at venues being swamped by coachloads of 15 year old pop fans who had come to the scene via articles in 'The Sun' newspaper or seeing "Footsie" on TOTP and had no apparent interest in any kind of Soul music prior to that date, but adopted the "Wigan-is-the-centre-of-the-universe" commercial propaganda wholesale and without question. (quote from one such; "I don't think I really like Soul... I just like the noise!" 'Wigan's Hitler Youth' we used to call 'em! Edited June 2, 2008 by mel brat
Paul R Posted June 2, 2008 Posted June 2, 2008 (edited) Talk about condescending remarks Mel!. I started going to the casino in Oct 73 at the grand old abge of 15, and was imediately accepted into the group of 20+ year old wheel & Torch ites. THis was because I was a soul fanatic who started off on Motown went onto Atlantic stax etc. At the same time, the local youth club was playing All the usual Wheel type sounds. Don't make the generalisation that all kids like me who went to the Casino at 15, who found out about it via crap articles in newspapers. Prior to Wigan I did a couple of Whitchurch Dayers & Va Vas(when they let me in). Keep the faith. Paul Edited June 3, 2008 by Paul r

Prior to Wigan I did a couple of Whitchurch Dayers & Va Vas(when they let me in). Keep the faith. Paul I make no such generalisation, I was referring to those many pop fans who jumped aboard the "Footsie" bandwagon. In fact your own experience only reinforces my point. I had (and have) no objection at all with younger people joining the Soul scene - witness the many dozens of Soul tapes I've given away over the years to anyone who shows even a passing interest in the music! - provided they have the "right soulful attitude" and don't abuse and dilute the unique nature of the scene. You may well ask "who are you to judge if their attitude is 'right'?", but as you probably remember, the period in question was particularly rocky with the whole Northern scene in danger of collapsing into a national farce. For example; I'll never forget seeing the immortal legend "NoUrthern Soul" (sic) sprayed on a wall in 1975, evidently by someone so enamoured by the music they couldn't even be bothered to spell it properly! I also well remember enquiring of a young chap at work why he was wearing a 'Twisted Wheel' badge when; a. He was obviously too young to have gone to the Wheel. b. The previous week he had been a die-hard fan of Rod Stewart, having slagged off Soul music at every opportunity (and continued to do so thereafter!) but "knew all about Wigan Casino" (he said) but had never "actually been"! Yes, I daresay I took it all a little too seriously, but it was just so damned embarrassing I'm unlikely to forget it in a hurry! Edited June 2, 2008 by mel brat
macca Posted June 2, 2008 Posted June 2, 2008 (edited) I hadn't turned 15 when I first went to the Casino in february 75. I'd previously spent a couple of years under the wing of a few of the older lads (paul donnelly, smudge, gary spencer etc) who used to organise soul nights at the local youth club. Having grown up on a diet of motown & stax & not being too enamoured of funk & the philly sound, northern/rare soul was a natural, effortless progression for me. I think the same can be said for most of us, or am I wrong? I must be an intolerant git because in the early 80's, I viewed the invasion of pimply 15 year old mods & skins as something dreadful. Wigan was a necessary rite of passage, to use a well worn clich. I'll never forget it... Macca Edited June 2, 2008 by macca
Guest kevnewry Posted June 2, 2008 Posted June 2, 2008 I DO HOPE MEL THAT WAS NOT A GENERALISATION OF 15 YEAR OLDS THAT WENT TO WIGAN IN 77 I DIDNT SEEM TO RUN INTO ANY OF THOSE TYPES,BUT PREFERRED THE COMPANY OF SOMEWHAT OLDER SOUL FANS WHO WERE ONLY TOO GLAD TO PASS ON THEIR KNOWLEDGE,AS DID WE ALL AT SOME STAGE IN OUR LIVES. I CAN UNDERSTAND YOUR VIEWS BUT IT DID COME ACROSS A BIT JUDGEMENTAL AND CONDSENDING! MY VIEW ON THE WHOLE THING IS WE ALL HAD TO START SOMEWHERE. IT IS UNFORTUNATE THAT SOME OF US DIDNT GET TO THE WHEEL OR THE TORCH,BUT FOR US AT THE TIME WIGAN WAS THE CENTRE OF THE UNIVERSE AND I MAKE NO APOLOGY FOR THAT. I ENVY THE FACT THAT YOU HEARD ALL THOSE GREAT TUNES AT FIRST HAND AND I MERELY HAD TO MAKE DO WITH OLD TAPES BROUGHT BACK FROM HERE AND THERE,UNTILL I GOT THE CHANCE TO GO TO REAL SOUL VENUES MYSELF. Wigan did have it's flaws but when you're a kid of 16 0r 17 what did we know,I only knew i loved SOUL MUSIC AND THATS WHERE I GOT THE CHANCE TO SHOW IT albeit in between some of the pop tunes that were played, but yet again we were still learning!!!! IN SOUL Kev
Guest mel brat Posted June 3, 2008 Posted June 3, 2008 (edited) I DO HOPE MEL THAT WAS NOT A GENERALISATION OF 15 YEAR OLDS THAT WENT TO WIGAN IN 77.... IN SOUL Kev Read what I actually wrote. Of course younger fans couldn't have gone to the Wheel or Torch any more than I could practically have gone to the Wheel (and they couldn't buy 70s records as new releases or Northern originals when they were cheap either - for obvious reasons!) My criticism has never been of young(er) people per. se., either now or then, but of those infernal divs who jumped on the Northern Soul bandwagon in 1975 and turned it (for me) into an embarrassing pop-circus no better than the Bay City Rollers. I'd had enough by 1975 and moved on, so by 1977 I didn't really give a damn what happened at Wigan Casino, truthfully. (Some of the antics reported in Frank Elson's column and shared alldayers at the Ritz, Tiffany's Blackheath and at Birmingham Locarno etc. convinced me I'd made the right move, but that's neither here nor there.) I continued to buy occasional Northern originals nonetheless, as none of the above was the fault of either Brice Coefield or the Vel-Vets! Edited June 3, 2008 by mel brat

Ian J Posted June 4, 2008 Posted June 4, 2008 In every thread about Wigan on here the comments are made about it being dead after 1977 and pop music being played. Fair enough, the music did go a bit wayward at times, but look what other records were broken there during those final years. Everybody seems to forget that. And why does the "people should move on" statement only concern Wigan. Stafford is always fondly remembered and the experience of visiting there wasn't a patch on Wigan.

I think because Stafford was seen as a progressive venue, most of the attendees are still interested in new stuff, rather than trying to re-live the place. Agree with you about the lateryears playlists, especialy from Richard. Some quality stuff there! Also, despite the crap played, I'd still say that it was in the minority. Stafford played some crap too, in retrospect!

Barry Posted June 6, 2008 Posted June 6, 2008 Haters, don't you love 'em!? You can spend your time knocking it, take a pop at youngsters who spent some time there, maybe some of them weren't as devout as yourself (make you feel more of a Soulie does it?)? At the end of the day, Wigan - forget what sh*t tracks (in your eyes) were played there, forget who wasn't good enough to be there, forget whose memories aren't worthy of your merit - because at the end of the day it was the best days of certain peoples lives - nowt to do with your venomous catty views. You're simply spitting on thousands of good Soul-Loving people that made this scene what it is today with your poorly thought out, insecure and at the end of the day, shallow, see through immatgure views. How's about that then? Rather than telling older Soulies to 'move on' for simply recounting their memories, I think it is obvious that the haters should 'move on', as it is obvious that you have very little else to say - shooting fish in a barrel for you innit mate? Does certain irrelevant others negativities cloud my views, my memories? I'll leave that obvious question open.

Guest kevnewry Posted June 6, 2008 Posted June 6, 2008 Seems true to say that regardless of what year it was or what age we were at the time with the exception of Mel's dislike for coaches and 15year olds,we all remember the place with fondness. Like a lot of other people it was a great time for me and I'll never forget it. Just like to add one more comment for Mel before I drop the thread, Is'nt it funny how a lot of 15 year olds that went to Wigan from 76/77/78 are members of this forum and still have the same passion for the music now as they had then, and I bet none of us got it by reading The Sun newspaper or watching totp. I wouldn't change a second of the past (except maybe the chemical excess ) but for me it's as good as it's ever been. Suinoz Posted June 8, 2008 Posted June 8, 2008 morning matt, yeh i know what you mean, never been a dancer but i struggle to string two records together but as you know i can talk for england G'Day guy's, had a sticky beak at most of the comments made, good, bad or indifferent. I have to say the scene started for me in late 1973 just after the Casino opened and just walking in the place blew me away. Went till mid 74, was 19 then and trying like buggery to be a champion cyclist. Bloody hard to ride a 25 mile race straight after an allnighter but it had to be done and NO i would'nt have had it any other way. Northern Soul was and still is my total passion and there are still a whole lot of soulies around today that went to the Casino, we even have several right here in Australia. We are the ones that were in the scene for the long haul and i often wonder what happened to the thousands, was it 200,000 members that packed it all in after December 1981?? Some were obviously " on the wave for the ride " and did'nt really give a toss about the music or the talented artists as long as they were seen " in the place " I feel really strongly about getting this fantastic music to the younger crowd, lets spread the faith, not " Keep It " Yes there were venues that were as good as the Casino for music quality and atmosphere, Notts. Palais alldayers for me, i never missed one, bloody awesome. Am now an ex pat living in Perth and running monthly soul nights at a venue with dare i say, a similar feel to the Casino, even smells the same, then it should do it's a 120 year old ex military drill hall with a curved ceiling and flouros. My hairs stood on end when i first saw the place, it was like walking into a time warp. We do get a lot of appreciative youngsters in, and yes they do dance, not like us but it's about having fun ain't it????? I came to England last year for the Casino reunion and will be there in September for the 35th anniversary, a 12000 mile jaunt.....How's that for support?? As they say " if it's in your blood, it's there for good. If anyone reading this is going, look me up, you never know you might recognise me even after all these years. Stay soulful. Tony E.

Gawd knows what happened to em all at the end but as i said i reckon many were on the ride so to speak. Let's just give the Casino the credit it deserves and it's place in the history of the Northern Soul scene is well documented. I for one will alway's say " It'll never be over for me " The new Casino Cafe in the Grand Arcade is well worth a look, hope to see you there on September 20th. Tony E.

Jumpinjoan Posted June 10, 2008 Posted June 10, 2008 Never went to Wigan, obviously far too young Of course I would have liked to have gone, but I can honestly say I have never really given it much thought, no point. But seeings as I love the odd dance or two, I can't help thinking that a dance floor that packed would have got on my nerves. PS: Did anyone ever get kicked in the head by all those people 'expressing' themselves via their lower limbs?
