Ian J Posted May 28, 2008 Posted May 28, 2008 Returned from a buying trip to Shifty's today and put my records into my box. Had a bit of a clean up and threw out a load of record mailers that I'd been keeping to re-use if I ever sell anything. Later on my housemate got home and, even though she wasn't at all interested, started to play her the records I'd bought. Searched and searched my record box for the mint International GTO's I'd got but couldn't find it. In a panic I emptied the bin and checked through the record mailers and there it was, still in the mailer I'd bought it home in. Luckily its a bank holiday week as the bin men normally come on Wednesday afternoon.

Guest Revilot1957 Posted May 30, 2008 Posted May 30, 2008 bought a mint demo of TONY HESTER ON KARATE PUT IT IN THE CAR......LATER ON CAUGHT MY FOOT ON IT AND SNAPPED IT IN HALF....THE JOURNEY HOME WAS VERY QUIET Found a Bobby Sheen - Doctor Love, mint UK Capitol '66 White Demo ... Around '76/'77 Popped it on the rear parcel shelf of my shitty Mini. Must have slipped about a quarter out of the sleeve on my way home. Blinding sun melted about a 2" strip of vinyl on one side ... And bleached a good half of the label. I still have this single ... A memory of "Take care of your discs" !!!!!!!!!!!!! Not a nearly disaster, of course ... Just a disaster.
Guest mel brat Posted May 30, 2008 Posted May 30, 2008 I'm still pining over a mint demo of the Glories "I Worship You Baby" on Date that I bought from Soul Bowl around 1975 (complete with perfect original sleeve) When the package arrived the record dropped out in three separate pieces having had a parcel thrown on top of it (you could clearly see the dent on the package) Naturally John gave me credit for it, but I never did get a replacement copy.
Guest Posted May 31, 2008 Posted May 31, 2008 Picked up a shmick Atlantic demo copy of Les McCann "What's going on" for a buck. Got home & chucked it on the deck without considering my flatmate had just replaced the needle - damned Ortofon's.... Played the side, very happy! Replayed the side & it was pretty much wiped clean! Just hiss with a faint sound coming through. Gutted. I never used Ortofon again, nor have I found another clean copy of that tune again. I still get cut now when I flick past that record & that was 12 years ago.
Guest James Trouble Posted May 31, 2008 Posted May 31, 2008 (edited) in the middle of one at the moment! at the airport heading to venice, normaly carry my 10+ 8 inch acetates through in my hand, one bag rule, but put then in the side pouch of my suite case as I go through the airport and then take them out before the suite case goes through customs. i've forgotten to take them out though and only realised as the suitecase disappeared off into the distance... if the suite case goes upside down there'll be acetates everywhere! AAARRRGGGGHHHHH! Edited May 31, 2008 by James Trouble

Pomonkey Posted July 10, 2008 Posted July 10, 2008 Fell asleep once very drunk next to pile of top shelf records sitting on the sofa, to add to the comedy was still wearing a heavy bicycle chain around my waist (I know, please don't ask, it was one of those nights), woke up in the morning on top of all of them spread out completely underneath me, chain and all, still can't believe they all survived, I'm a big fucker too. Worst was a pile of records toppling and falling onto a wooden floor, a piece of one of them snapped off and spilled out to one side so then had to go through all of them to find out which record it came from hoping desperately it had come from some nothing record, no such luck of course, Johnny McCall on Satellite, cost me an arm and a leg to finally replace. That mailer story had a worse version here, friend did it to a Noblemen on Orlyn, $1200+ garage 45, he realised too late and never saw it again, ouch.
Epic Posted July 10, 2008 Posted July 10, 2008 Everytime I hear Bill Bush - "I'm Waiting" I think to myself that is a a definite vinyl disaster .
Spacehopper Posted July 11, 2008 Posted July 11, 2008 kinda.... when i first moved to bristol moved around a bit ...one time going from one flat in a dodgy area to another took a car load of stuff which me and a mate unloaded went back to get the next lot and found id left the door wide open with a crate of about 150 reggae 12"s on the door mat ...doh! ...think it might have been the herbal medication i was on at the time bought a couple of vinyl disasters !
Guest ScooterNik Posted July 11, 2008 Posted July 11, 2008 One of the first allnighters I went to back in the early 80s... spent about £200 on about 15 -20 records, put them in my singles case and kept it in sight for most of the night. Came out with my mate, bag over my shoulder, case in my hand, chatting away. Got to my car, put the bag on the floor and the case on top of the roof and unlocked the car. Guess the rest. Never saw the case again. Nothing really what you could call rare, but stuff I wanted at the time. Got most of them again, but they came in at twice book in my mind!
Pete S Posted July 11, 2008 Posted July 11, 2008 Not a near disaster but a total one sorting out records last year and for some reason one came to be on the floor , pushed back my chair ...yep staight over it, broke it in half.......joanne courcy on twirl. b#gger! That record must be cursed then - I had a Joanne Courcey and arranged to sell it to Max, so I said I'd drive over with it. To be safe, I thought I won't just put it on the seat beside me, I'll put it in mailer, so I put it in the mailer with two bits of card, pushed it down into the mailer and put my thumb straight through it, putting a 2" crack in it...

I had a Ben Aiken again from Soul Bowl, folded in half by relef postman (xmas time). John sent me a replacement, but after Christmas I sat on a Wobat that i was meant to give to Martin Koppel for swaps! Edited July 11, 2008 by davetay
