Nutshell Stevie chum, nutshell. Of course the scene can never be as vibrant, exciting, huge as it was, Back in the day the scene was young and so were we! Oh what thrills the week-end held! Thats exactly it..........times move on the scene changes........of course the music is still great, just maybe less appreciated in today's context, and who can blame todays youth for looking to something diffrent.........isn't that what we did with the nothern scene?? Loads of old music is still great, the music doesn't change, just the amount of people who appreciate it at any given time changes. Guest kevnewry
I'd just like to add that its now 2008 a very different world to the "good old days" most of us travel to do's by car no longer B/Rail or a long bus journey I choose not to wear "the northern soul uniform" any more.. some do (their choice) Wigan is no more ....I understand the phenomenon but NEVER visited..a shame really would have liked to visit. Things enevitably do move on wether any of us like it or not I bought a record I thought was a bargain on Ebay to find that its a bootleg( I assume that didnt happen in the 1970s)...maybe it still is a bargain because I got the same sound in those little grooves as some DJ who paid megabucks for theirs! they pay megabucks for their copy because its an original I bought mine because I like the tune (and its a relatively new sound to me even tho its an oldie) Thats life! Mand MY SENTIMENTS EXACTLY..... WHEN I'M ON THE DANCEFLOOR COULD'NT GIVE A TOSS THAT A BRILLIANT TUNE HAS THE RIGHT COULERED LABEL!!!!!! AT THE END OF THE DAY LET DJ'S AND COLLECTORS DO THEIR THING LET THE REST OF US DO OURS... AND DANCE DANCE DANCE.. THATS NORTHERN SOUL IMHO. Guest
Are you serious about not putting anymore soul and ska do's on? That's a real shame your do was good; it was fun and played good quality music. Ska and soul should be played together in my opinion and the scooterists love it. I wish everyone would lighten up and as others have stated, go to do's where you like the music. I actually like this scene 'cause it's underground don't ruin it by making it popular, on mass and diluted.Only an opinion It's all retrospective to me, would I have gone to Wigan in the day not sure? But I'm sick of everything being compared to that time or the 'good old days'. Keep looking forward Disclaimer: No offence meant to anyone No I was just (trying to) make a point ! I collect vintage 45s because I love the great old quality tunes !! I could not give a shit about "Northern Soul Scene Politics" Thats their business ! Thanks for your nice comments ! We will continue to do our events in our local town ! Guest Trevski
So very, very true...... regards Paul I do have my moments..... There have been some very long, and passionate post on this thread, from both sides of the fence. How things should be, what is wrong, what is right, what needs changing. What they are really saying is "I want to re-shape the scene in my own image, to suit me, the way I want it". Or perhaps from geniune altruistic motives, "This is what I think would be best for everyone, this is how I would improve it for all" Fact It was never perfect, never how we wanted it. I moaned about the queues at Wigan, playing pop stompers, piss on the bog floor, divvies atracting the squad, a hundred and one things, but when you were there, things never felt so right. The scene morphs and changes without control, without one persons influence, like it has a life of its own. If you don't like a certain do, find one you do like. If there are none, start your own. I like a good argument as well as the next man, but on this subject I really feel it is not worth arguing about. It takes all sorts to make a world, and all sorts to make a scene. Do what you do, for you, and leave what others do to them. There's still room for all! Guest sandi
Could be better if some of the poorer venues fell by the way side. Numbers healthy but these often spread over far too many venues. The music could be better too with far too many venues stuck in backwards thinking oldies rut. There are venues who like to progress but some often at the expense of dancers, instread preferring lounge music, plodderrs and crossover no one can dance too. Venues should embrace all eras IMHO, but they should favour the dancers and not the collectors. well said l agree 100% Link to comment Social source share
Roger Williams
especially with you modern DJ's who seem to charge the earth (despite your music being substantially cheaper in many instances). You can't be referring to me, you stopped booking me for Bury modern room years ago!! Seriously though, what constitutes 'charging the earth'? Any DJ who demands a very high fee on this scene, depending on the gig of course, is bring pretty unrealistic I think. It might be different for some others, but personally I never ask a promoter for a certain amount, I'm generally happy with what I'm offered and on occasions when I've done a gig that's been poorly supported, I've refused payment and just taken petrol money on the insistence of the promoter. Personally, but probably plenty of others, the money's not the absolute priority so long as the expenses are covered - if you get a decent amount, great, if not, then unless you're mercenary in your attitude towards DJ'ing, it might be a little disappointing but won't be such a big deal as the majority do it as much for the enjoyment as for the money. I bet you'd do a 3 hour spot if it was the right venue and still wouldnt complain!. I did three hour set in the Hilton Weekender lounge in Birmingham one Sunday afternoon, and was still disappointed when I had to finish. There's just no pleasing some folks!! Madmandy
Have a look at post *61,said just about the same thing . Liketo take up the point made around "soul nights and suiting personal circumstances". Not everyone can get to niters anymore. Family commitments, health issues, work are far more important to people than when we were 16-18,and chucking in a MONDAY morning at work was the norm cos we'd "overdone" it and didn't "land" til Sunday afternoon. Those who don't have these commitments and can do as you please, think yourself lucky. Soul nites are some peeps only chance to get out, without hassle.IMHO. Kev you Know I'm with you on this one! Maybe Its because we a share some of the same commitments I sometimes think promoters want to know why you havent been in the place for months Gary now is "on call" with the job so we havent been out this weekend at all it means we miss some of the regular do's we go to But as I said earlier we go where we can when we can and its our choice you and I both know that the politics can spoil the only decent night out we get! and we certainly don't need it Mand Link to comment Social source share
