Over the last 6/7 months we have been having a bit of a laugh about a newly defined category of soul music - Mamsey Pamsey. Some have even suggested that it now warrants its own room.......read into that what you like laugh.gif .

The term was coined by Bearsy back in November when Blue Skies found a new home at the Horseshoes in London and referred to the type of music that I lean toward collecting and playing out.

What is Mamsey Pamsey?

It tends to be mid tempo female vocals with that wow/tingle factor, predominantly 60s but there has been one or two early 70s releases to creep in to my play box and played at Blue Skies by Guest DJs and other residents.

A couple of people have joked with me recently saying I should put together a Mamsey Pamsey Top 500. I think 500 is a little ambitious at first so I am going to go for my top 100 and I would like you all to help me compile this by suggesting some of your own - but as the Queen Of Mamsey Pamsey I will have the final say as to whether something makes the top 100 and from this I hope to define the ultimate Mamsey Pamsey record of all time.

I will kick off with some of my entries, some of which I own but a few that are still on the Holy Grail of the ever growing wants list. I will put any that I don't own in red italics and at the moment they are in alphabetical order, When I get to 100 entries new entries can kick out existing ones until I feel I have achieved the ultimate top 100.

Just ignore Simon, he's being an internet terrorist hijacking your thread like that. rolleyes.gif

I think Dottie Cambridge (aka Dorothy Moore) qualifies, both for "Cry your eyes out" and The Poppies.

See you at the Hat-filled alldayer.

I don't understand what the record has to have to qualify, it just looks like it's any record by a woman basically?

I understand it to mean female, mid tempo sweet soul as opposed to the more big vocal records...so I wouldn't include Marie Knight or Linda Jones records for example.

Although I've probably got it wrong...Chrissie???

Well not quite Pete, I have to like it :D Some on there are sure to be kicked off (especially some of mine) when better, more MP ones are nominated wink.gif just used some of them as a starting point.

Think, Liz Verid, Lydia Pense, Rozetta Johnson, Bille Davis and you will be on the right track  .....and it is just a bit of fun yes.gif

Well, I suppose so but now I am a proud owner/well major share holder in a copy, but that's another story, I think it still has to be in black cos I got one :D but you do have the honour of being the first to play, IMHO, one of the ultimate MP records of all time at Blue Skies.

i probably don't really get what "mamsey pamsey" is, but it sounds like what we call "teenage girl angst drama" stuff. if that's correct you could ask jo wallace for some tips. many years ago she told me about spinning northern at a gay club in london. they all went crazy for female drama songs, e.g. ivories - please stay

errrrrrrrrrrr not quite not "teenage girl angst drama stuff" don't really see Liz Verdi or Lydia Pense in that ilk and I defy you to find many "teenage girls" onto their "32nd Love Affair"

OK I have now reached 105 so time to start cutting out the not soooooooooooo Mamsey Pamsey.

Now reduced to 100 I think

Kicked out were 5 of mine which while all great records not quite Mamsey Pamsey enough :D

Rejected

Persionettes - Call on me

Holly St James - That's not love

Delicates - Stop shoving me around

Barbara Lynne - Take your love and run

Bernadette Peters - We'll Start The Party

and also out

Kiki Dee - Magic Carpet Ride - nominated by Pete Robinson (Marrs Bar)

Charlotte O'Hara - What About You - nominated by AndyF

This is where it gets difficult as any nominated now have to replace one of the 100 so to make it a little easier for me, can you nominate one that should be rejected from the list as well and I will consider it or find and alternative, also there are a fair few I don't know so I will have to track down sound bites of them

Keep nominating biggrin.gif

 A little tip Mamsey Pamsey is predominatley 60s or has a 60s feel about it and is more like to succeed
