I was at a performance management meeting recently with a couple of prison governors and two prison officers. Half way through the meeting one of the prison officers' phone went off n his ring tone was none other than 'The Snake' .He looked very embarrassed and apologised profusley I said he should be more embarrassed by his ring tone rather than the fact he had forgotten to turn his phone off! One of the governors said, "yeah i know, the snake! What posessed you when there are so many good northern tunes to chose from!!!!"

Needless to say the meeting went out of the window and we talked for ages about venues tunes etc. Both of them had not been out on the scene for a while but i pointed them in the direction of a few do's in their area and one of them has emailed me since to say he went souling for the first time in 10 years and feels like he's found a new lease of life!!!!

Was at Fuerteventura airport once waiting for a flight home, only to hear Washed Ashore by The Platters coming out of another waiting passengers stereo... Could have been a comp cd, but stranger than that, a few years back my mate heard Wanted in Three States by Larry Clinton coming from a stereo at Glastonbury of all places ... He felt compelled to approach and say "Wanted in Three States by Larry Clinton" ... Think they just gave him a non plussed look..

I once met a fellow scottish soulie (and part time footie casual) and had to arrest him for fighting at a Dundee utd match.

Which was vaguely embarrassing for both of us.

About Eight year's ago the company that I am with moved to new premises in Warrington, and we had a customer open day, Our guest speaker on the night was Sir Gordon Banks and they wanted some music to play in the background, and one of the office girl's got some cd's from their car which was the normal hit's crap, I shouted out get some 'Northern Soul on', and two engineer's that I had known for four years came up and said 'I use to go to Wigan', so we had a good old natter about the music/scene, I went to the car and got some cd's which we played at one of the guy's work benches, we were then joined by Gordon Banks who said that he enjoyed Northern Soul, and he mentioned a few top tunes that he liked. What was going to be a boring night turned out into a very memorable one  .

I offered to take one of the engineer's to a do and he is now very active on the scene.

The strange big/small world of Northern Soul, It's great ain't it  .

Bumped in to my Auntie Chrissie one night at Casino.

Don't know who was more embarrassed, her, me or the mate of mine who was with her!

Mind you she is only about a year older than me!

I was asked by our US corporate office to attend a business lunch in Waterloo (the battelefield

place not station) hosted by one our major air freight forwarders. They sat me next to a Brit and

a few of us got talking about hanging about airport lounges and long waits for flights. The Brit,

Peter says "once in Detroit we had a 6 hour delay so my colleague, also Peter dragged me down

to the old Motown studios" I say "Grand Boulevard" ................eyebrows are raised..............

"Yes but Peter is deep into soul" "Mee too" says I............."But Peter is really, really deap into

soul music" "Mee too" says I again "Peter's into Northern Soul" "Mee too" says I yet again.

Peter turns out to Peter Braughams (hope that's how you spell it) midweek DJ at Casino and

used to date Pep's sisters (at the same time hopefully :-) Peter and I met up a week later

during the follow-up meeting and spent all the day comparing NS notes, better than sex (well

almost - depends if there's spanking involved:-)

Had a few others, I live in town centre, quiet queit it iz, I was playing some stuff with bedroom

window open I hear a bloke shout up "Good stuff our kid, top Northern Soul" stuck head out of

window, he was from Cheshire did Casino & Mecca.

That sounds like a very similar scenario i found myself in when serving one of the engineering contractors..although working for a German firm...he was from Manchester....when he went to pay for his meal...i noticed a tattoo of the Night Owl...i remember shrieking with suprise which startled one of the counter staff who promptly dropped a full english plated breakfast straight onto the floor laugh.gif ... also ....two others from Nottingham who were in the queue also piped up that they were into Northern as well....I managed to handle that a bit better!!!!!...Delxxxx

I have just finished a six year tenure as the Vice Chair of a Foserting Panel for a private fostering agency.

A few months ago I received the paperwork to read for a couple coming to panel. The vetting for foster carers is very stringent and the paperwork considerable, going into every aspect of the applicants lives and ablities etc.

This couple came off the page as excellent candidates but it sealed it for me when they had told their assessor that they were Northern Soul fans! thumbup.gif

I went to Panel and the couple made their representatation. Lovely folk with lots to offer children in need of a stable family life.

When we got to the part where the couple left the room for the panel to make comment and vote, every other panel member made perfectly professional comments and gave their considered opinions (as I would normally do). The Chair came to me and I said "well, this couple told me in the waiting room earlier that they go to Lowton so they can't do any wrong for me"!

They were approved. :P

As I am no longer on the panel I won't get to hear how they are doing but I do hope their new responsibilities have not curtailed their nights out too much.:lol:

I went on a Casino cruise ship in St Petersburgh, Florida in the early 90's and got seated opposite two elderly black ladies for the meal before they opened up the gambling tables.

We got talking and they asked me what I did and I told 'em I was in the music business and one of the ladies mentioned that her nephew used to be in the music business in L.A.

I asked her what her nephew's name was and she said, "Oh, you won't have heard of him because he's never had a hit record but he played a lot of sessions. His name's Jimmy Conwell".

Naturally I went nuts and spewed out Jimmy's entire discography! Both women just couldn't believe what they were hearing. They eventually phoned Jimmy and told him of the conversation and he then got in touch with me when I got back to the UK and I put him onto a dealer and he re-pressed "Mellow Mellow Me" which was a popular two-stepper at the time.

Small world.

Although I have met a load of fellow soulies in various places, both good & bad experiences.(don't like lying bullsh*tters). My job takes me worldwide as a marine engineer, and in one flight to the states, after inwardly sn*****ing at the group of american schoolgirls on the flight with matching sweatshirts declaring "Beaver College" as their place of education, I sat next to their teacher. After a few drinks I started chatting and she told me she was from Philly and at her high school prom in 1967 ish they had a group I wouldn't have heard of called "Lee Andrews and the Hearts", playing. I then bored her to tears for the rest of the flight finding various tracks on my MP3 player for her "I've Had It", "Nevertheless" etc. I bet it was the longest flight she had ever been on.

Actually you'll never believe this but............. when out shoplifting one day.. I got caught and ended up in a cell at my local nick.. after being officially charged and taken to cell 4b for an internal I remember hearing the ominus smack of rubber on the hands of the big hairyarsed officer as he pulled on his marigolds with a huge grin on his face. Bend over fatty he growled..

Now the funny thing was as he probed with his huge jumbo sausage like digits I seemed to think through painfully tearful eyes, eh up fatboy there's something odd here...as you do... I think it was about the time I was examining my shoes and thinking how funny they looked without shoe-laces when a voice from behind barked out... Here.. haven't I seen you before... didn't you used to go to Wigan Casino umpteen years ago?...

Well would you beleive it? It was only the same hairy arsed copper who turned me over when I was 18 and I remember thinking, like, ain't it funny how you meet people you knew before because of the soul scene in the strangest places...???? Oh well !! BIG MICK.....

That Icmeler is clearly a place to avoid ! Bout 7 years ago, walking down the main drag which was lined with total pain in the arse. non stop "come in my bar, is best and cheapest in Turkey" hawkers. Having decided we'd had enough of the harrassment we decided we'd give the main drag a swerve and head off to quieter parts for a glug. Just then one of them decides to have one last go, racing across the road .................... "Hey Tommy, Hey Tommy u want drink, Hey Tommy come in my bar is best, Tommy you come have drink in my bar and I play soul music for you"...........Eh wtf ! Turning round to try and understand how this mystic Turkish git had worked that bit out, I was greeted by a guffawing Ion, last seen at the 100 Club a fortnight before, cue retire to bar for a few bevvies and talks of things soul.

Must admit tho, he did (and still does) look the part !

I work in a Community Centre in the Northern Beaches in Sydney, a woman came in to help with an exhibition and I couldn't help but notice her Lancashire accent. Of course I had to question her about her musical taste and mentioned that I used to go to Wigan. To which she replied "My brother was bloody obsessed with and used to go every week for years!" adding "I know what you used to get up to then!" (What she meant by that I don't know  ) anyway, the next day I got an e-mail from her brother who now lives in Scotland (of all places) and we talk every now and then. I even let him know of any events that are coming up in Scotland.

Then a few months ago one of my students had two lecturers coming in from the University for her final placement. She was very nervous about it and it all began very formally, until I realised the male lecturer had a Manchester accent. I thought I would put him to the test and said I used to go to the Ritz. It was like a magic wand! He had been living out here for years and didn't know there was a scene out here, (I even took him upstairs to show off our dance floor where we have had a few little gatherings.)

The student said to me quietly as she went in for her interview " I think I can safely say I've already passed. What's Northern Soul?"

I haven't seen him again as I left for the UK after that, so I must look him up and get him back into it again.

I just had to find this thread & comment. Just popped to Tescos for some milk so my boss can make me a cup of tea & the woman serving me nodded & said "Have you been?" The look on my face must have told her that i didn't have a scooby as to what she was on about & she said "Wigan Casino, have you been?" I replied that it was knocked down the year before i was born & she couldn't believe it! :wicked: She didn't know that The Casino was knocked down 25 years ago or that the scene was still going!

I told her all about the nighters i frequent most weekends & that theres loads of soul dos on. I've got to take her in some flyers!

It was only as i got back into my car i thought how the hell did she know that i was a soulie until i got back to the office & my boss pointed out that my t-shirt probably gave it away! (It says Wigan Casino Heart of Soul!)

We're always on the look out for 'fallen by the wayside' or inactive soulies here, they do turn up, my friend Kev works for centrelink (DHSS) & almost the 1st thing he'll say to any client who's a pom is 'Do you like Northern Soul & do you like scooters'....has pulled up a few, Ainsley has met people in chip shops, restaurants, & on jobs with the same line, & so have I.

One encounter I remember, I had to go to a chemist to do a quote for some work (stop sn*****ing at the back) & the girl was from Wigan, so I asked the question 'Did you ever go to Wigan Casino'?....her reply was 'No love I don't gamble'.....lol...I just shook my head & didn't even bother to continue the conversation.

Recently a supplier I use spotted my 'Northern Soul...A Way Of Life' decal on my van's back window & is an ex-soulie & is now coming to our nights.

Yes bazabod

"keeping the faith " does tend to attract religious nuts

Another funny thing is getting paranoid at someone staring at my chest to then realise the're reading my wigan t shirt :D
