ImberBoy Posted May 11, 2008 Posted May 11, 2008 What is the most covered soul record that is played or not played as the case maybe on the Northernsoul scene? pikeys dog Posted May 11, 2008 Posted May 11, 2008 Junior Walker was the original. The most covered 'Northern Soul' record is probably 'Ain't No Big Thing'
Guest Posted May 11, 2008 Posted May 11, 2008 Junior Walker was the original. The most covered 'Northern Soul' record is probably 'Ain't No Big Thing' or hello stranger?
Guest Posted May 11, 2008 Posted May 11, 2008 Or "Hello Big Thing" is that the same as "blimey your breasts are bigger than mine" think thats the nearest I've ever got to saying "hello big thing" on the Northern scene we'll get told off for going off topic next...
Sean Hampsey Posted May 11, 2008 Posted May 11, 2008 is that the same as "blimey your breasts are bigger than mine" think thats the nearest I've ever got to saying "hello big thing" on the Northern scene we'll get told off for going off topic next... Sorry - just couldn't help myself Kirsty, OK then... on topic, "Land of 1,000 Dances" is one of the most covered songs of all time. So that would be my nomination. Now... back to my big thing!
Guest rachel Posted May 11, 2008 Posted May 11, 2008 is that the same as "blimey your breasts are bigger than mine" think thats the nearest I've ever got to saying "hello big thing" on the Northern scene we'll get told off for going off topic next... Yes you will, behave yourselves!
Sean Hampsey Posted May 11, 2008 Posted May 11, 2008 "Land of 1,000 Dances" Covers. Chris Kenner Cannibel & The Headhunters Wison Pickett Don Bryant Thee Midnighters J Geils Band Sam & Dave The Dynamics The Mad Lads Jimmy Barnes April Stevens Rufus Thomas Streetlife Tom Jones Sandy & The Accents The Boogie Kings The Action The Knickerbockerd Los Pajaros Eddie Money Fats Domino The Q Tips The Rascals The Ventures Walker Brothers Roy Orbison... ...Bill Haley And many more, I'm sure! Sean
Sean Hampsey Posted May 11, 2008 Posted May 11, 2008 And not forgetting... the "Electric Indian" version (which, thankfully, I had forgot) was a pretty big 'Northern' spin mid 70's. "What Does It Take" "Aint No Big Thing" and "Hello Stranger" not in the same 'oft covered' BIG League, I'm afraid. Sean

Sean Hampsey Posted May 11, 2008 Posted May 11, 2008 Dee Dee Warwick did it too, on an 80's album. So did... The Bay Brothers The Younghearts (70's LP). Alton Ellis Ellis Dodd Kenny G Judi Deleon Jonathan Butler Don Byron Deborah Davis... ... and Santana! So 'oft covered' but not as often as "Land Of 1,000 Dances" methinks! Sean

Sean x

Sean Hampsey Posted May 12, 2008 Posted May 12, 2008 ... was just sayin' You're right. Thanks Mel for your contribution to the "What Does It Take" list. But LOATD is still in front, by my reckoning! Anyone don't know it? Check the vid! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZoJQ1bF243Y...feature=related 'Northern Dancers' stand aside! Sean
Stillsoulin Posted May 12, 2008 Posted May 12, 2008 A rather tasty version of what does it take, by 5th Dimension lp track too. rob h.

Sean I have a weird jazzy version of 'what does it take' by a carolina group called the ovations on a carolina triad label.
Guest nusha Posted May 12, 2008 Posted May 12, 2008 Kenny G version of what does it take is great and features Lenny Williams on Lead vocals .ref LOATD i think i heard an instrumental version when we used to go to the CASINO years ago.Think it was MR BLOE ?
Guest Posted May 12, 2008 Posted May 12, 2008 Dawn. "Tie a Yellow Ribbon" was released by Bell in February 1973, and by April it was the number one record in the country. In all, it spent more than five months on the charts and sold more than seven million copies. The song was so popular that over 100 cover versions were cut by other artists, all around the world. Over 100 covers of this, must be a winner

Winston Francis also did a version for Studio One. All 3 very soulful Jamaican versions. A cheesy version by Kenny G turned up in 1986... Edited May 12, 2008 by ZapatootheTiger
