What is the most covered soul record that is played or not played as the case maybe on the Northernsoul scene?

WHAT DOES IT TAKE (TO WIN YOUR LOVE AGAIN)

Was the original Jnr Walker & the All Stars?

There are covers by The Electric Cashmeres, The Californian Raisins, Santana, Johnny Bristol and a brilliant one by Garland Jeffreys.

Who was the original and are there any more plus what is the most covered track?

Junior Walker was the original.

The most covered 'Northern Soul' record is probably 'Ain't No Big Thing'

or hello stranger?

Or "Hello Big Thing"

is that the same as "blimey your breasts are bigger than mine"

think thats the nearest I've ever got to saying "hello big thing" on the Northern scene

we'll get told off for going off topic next...

Sorry - just couldn't help myself Kirsty,

OK then... on topic, "Land of 1,000 Dances" is one of the most covered songs of all time.

So that would be my nomination.

Now... back to my big thing!

:D

And not forgetting... the "Electric Indian" version (which, thankfully, I had forgot) was a pretty big 'Northern' spin mid 70's.

"What Does It Take" "Aint No Big Thing" and "Hello Stranger" not in the same 'oft covered' BIG League, I'm afraid.

Dee Dee Warwick did it too, on an 80's album.

So did...

The Bay Brothers

The Younghearts (70's LP).

Alton Ellis

Ellis Dodd

Kenny G

Judi Deleon

Jonathan Butler

Don Byron

Deborah Davis...

... and Santana!

So 'oft covered' but not as often as "Land Of 1,000 Dances" methinks!

Agree they are rather nice and remarkable, Kirsty, but I wouldn't know how to convert from Acetate to CD...

...so I'm afraid I can't do that... even for you - dearest!

I have a weird jazzy version of 'what does it take' by a carolina group called the ovations on a carolina triad label.

Dawn.

"Tie a Yellow Ribbon" was released by Bell in February 1973, and by April it was the number one record in the country. In all, it spent more than five months on the charts and sold more than seven million copies. The song was so popular that over 100 cover versions were cut by other artists, all around the world.

Over 100 covers of this, must be a winner

Alton Ellis did two versions in 1970 - one for Coxsone Dodd at Studio One and again for arch-rival Duke Reid.

Winston Francis also did a version for Studio One.

All 3 very soulful Jamaican versions.

A cheesy version by Kenny G turned up in 1986...

well can anyone tell me of the California Raisns are actually that cartoon group because i remember watching a cartoon with the same name and they released a record of I Heard it Through the Grapevine

The answer but it's not soul is Yesterday is the most covered track i believe and if you think about it i bet there's a fair few soul versions out there

Unchained Melody is a very big track that's been recorded so many times too that i keep finding versions i own and it mounts up to at least 20 - 30 versions
