Ernie Andrews Posted May 7, 2008 Posted May 7, 2008 She was singing it on some TV programme the other night - Think it was the lottery programme - Nice and the record aint bad either
Jerry Hipkiss Posted May 8, 2008 Posted May 8, 2008 Good version, and don't forget that it's not the first female version - Vicki Sue Robinson covered it in '76 on RCA...
Guest Posted May 8, 2008 Posted May 8, 2008 Good version, and don't forget that it's not the first female version - Vicki Sue Robinson covered it in '76 on RCA... ..something tells me I'll hear it more than once at the Birmingham Weekender later this month.. Jayne.x.
Bazza Posted May 8, 2008 Posted May 8, 2008 I Heard this new version of Bobby Womacks "Daylight" today on the radio and guess what! I think it's great! Just sounds like the usual warbling tripe to me Bazza
Girthdevon Posted May 8, 2008 Posted May 8, 2008 Just sounds like the usual warbling tripe to me Bazza Me too......appalling version, unimaginative production and soulless vocals..... Sorry Girf
Djmelismo Posted May 8, 2008 Posted May 8, 2008 The Kelly Rowland version is quite nice, but of course pales in comparison with Bobby Womack´s original recording from 1975. It´s from Safety Zone (UA), which I remember as kind of a slick album.
Guest TONY ROUNCE Posted May 8, 2008 Posted May 8, 2008 Lovely girl, can't sing (never could) and why would anyone seriously care about spinning this when they have Womack, Vicki Sue Robinson or Georgie Fame available to play instead!
Guest stevessoulsounds Posted May 8, 2008 Posted May 8, 2008 Carl Sim's did a very good version of this track on his last CD. I think it was called Can't Stop Me https://www.stevessoulsounds.co.uk/shop/pro...?xPRODUCTid=687 Cheers Steve
Guest nusha Posted May 8, 2008 Posted May 8, 2008 Of course the old codgers will go on about Womacks wonderful original..But how often do they dig it out from their enormous archives.Hardly ever i bet. They are too busy waffling on about their valuable trophy pieces. You urban haters can have a field day but the youngsters will love it.Good sales.Lots of lovely royalties for its composer and a new Porsche for hard working Kelly.Which is what this business is really about..
Reg Posted May 8, 2008 Posted May 8, 2008 Im not the oldest of codgers but I don't like it at all. Why? Well the singing style is dreadful, like most female "R&B" singers nowadays she does insist on warbling and trilling like a demented Mariah Carey and surely this is a song that is good enough without a thousand unnecessary notes. I'm sure Bobby is loving having an attractive young lady do one of his songs (I've read his book, lol!!!)
Garethx Posted May 8, 2008 Posted May 8, 2008 Womack's version of this is the only one worth bothering about. A pleasant pop song taken to the limit with a truly great BW vocal and, crucially, the harmonies which all other versions miss by a mile. Kelly Rowland's version is strictly karaoke.
Paul Dunn Posted May 8, 2008 Posted May 8, 2008 Just sounds like the usual warbling tripe to me Bazza Depends on the media. It's Kelly every time on music video
Garethx Posted May 8, 2008 Posted May 8, 2008 There's a version on Youtube by Harold Payne (the song's writer) which gives a measure of the mighty job Womack did with the raw material.

If you are not old you are sounding old for your age.Over the top insults and hysterical critiscm.Does not sound remotely like Mariah Carey..Warbling and trilling by the way is what birds do.It has long been a compliment to say someone sings like a bird.
Harrogatesoul Posted May 8, 2008 Posted May 8, 2008 I hardly think they are 'Over the top' nor 'hysterical insults' - If your going to cover a particulary great soul track from one of THE artists of our times you better make it good or you going to leave yourself wide open for criticism from soul music lovers. But then of course if the business is really about getting young Kelly a new Porsche then our personal criticism is hardly going to make a dent in sales is it? It's aimed at a pop market who wouldn't even think it had been done before let alone compare the versions.

Oh bog off, just cos I don't agree with you means I'm an old codger.... it's bland unchallenging pop music at best but there really is no need to try and educate me further as I'm sure plenty of people will buy it as they really don't know any better.

Wonack himself is not adverse to covering other peoples popular songs in his own inimmable wayI am sure his fans really enjoy his renditions of FLY ME TO THE MOON,Close To You/California Dreaming etc.Im sure some people think these are great versions.I do not much care for them but i would not say he sounded demmented when performing them. All artists who make records aim at the pop market. If Bobby Womack does not beliene this then why did he let the Rolling Stones have the global hit with ITS ALL OVER NOW?Constructive critiscm from Soul fans is welcome but not anti youth/better in my day.RnBs tripe type dismissives are just snobberry.Bobby womack likes Caddilacs so maybe he will get a new one.The car metaphors are about earning a living if you missed that.

Guest TONY ROUNCE Posted May 8, 2008 Posted May 8, 2008 Womack's version of this is the only one worth bothering about. I don't agree with this assessment at all - as I've said before on SS, Womack comes in a poor third on "Daylight" to Vicki Sue and Georgie, in that order. But at least all three of the aforementioned can (Or in the late Vicki Sue's case, could) sing, unlike the otherwise perfect Ms. Rowland. To be homest, if we were holding a poll for most overrated soul singer of all time, Womack would be at or near the top of my list. Virtually none of his albums are listenable from beginning to end, apart from 'My Prescription', he hasn't made a decent album since Beverly Glen cobbled together the material for "Someday We'll All Be Free" over 20 years ago and I can't honestly fathom the reasons for his ongoing deification (and probably never will)... ....BUT AT LEAST HE CAN SING

Sutty Posted May 8, 2008 Posted May 8, 2008 backatcha Nusha, take out the fact it's a song that Womack did and you are left with a second rate record. If you're so interested in banging on about new music then have some taste and recommend some decent new music instead of average records like the Kelly Rowland track. Kelly herself has done better than this before, and so has Mariah, so instead of assuming people don't like it because they don't like modern music, think about the real reasons most people won't like it - because it's not very good, and it's only being discussed because Womack did it! LOL there's tons of new music about worth the people's coin, so why bother defending the average like this? not everyone disliking a modern recording has a 'northern soul/old is best' agenda you know. cheers Sutty

I'm sure it says in his book Bobby Womack didn't want the Rolling Stones to have 'It's All Over' although when the cheques came in his mind changed.

Bobby Womack didn't want them to record it at all, Sam Cooke tried to talk him into it and he never actually agreed to it. Apparantly after the royalty cheques started coming in tried his best to get them to cover another of his tracks!! Anyway maybe we should have another thread for great tales about soul artists...and leave the "urban" to the kids eh .
Guest DELORENZO Posted May 8, 2008 Posted May 8, 2008 I became interested there, when I saw Kevin Rowland - Daylight, only to realise it said Kelly, I need Glasses, or less drink, opticians tomorrow, wife can drive !!!!!
wendy Posted May 11, 2008 Posted May 11, 2008 I think it's alright but she should do more tunes like Bump Like This, that was deadly!
Chris Anderton Posted May 12, 2008 Posted May 12, 2008 My Missus heard the new version on the radio the other week and loved it....i explained that the original was by Sir Bobby and put it on CD for her...and guess what? There is only one version she listens to now and it aint bloody Kelly! A girl with fine taste...guess thats why i married her.....! Chris
