Tracks ya should hate but don't ever get sick of......

FUTURES - PARTY TIME MAN, I could have this on loop I love it and first heard it hammered to near death many years ago and championed by my mate Eddy, I have

this on at the moment and just adore the ending, the dance floor just oozes happiness when this is on. Middelton is just around the corner and I have itchy feet, mind you I have Athlete's foot from borrowing my friend's sand shoes once, he was a right clatty twatt and me mum warned me about borrowing stuff from him..... you do not want to hear about when I borrowed a pair of his skiddies!

so whats your tracks???

Murderbeat says:-

I Can't Help Loving You - Paul Anka

Dance Dance Dance - The Casualeers

I'm Gonna Change - The Four Seasons

Afternoon Of The Rhino - The Mike Post Coalition

I get filled with elation whenever I hear 'em. Just GREAT Northern soul in every case and all lily-white acts, so I shouldn't really like 'em 'cos that wouldn't be very credible would it?

But if I wanna get revved-up for a night out I'll often whack these on early doors then hit the town running LOL... :D

Good question, nobody admits to likin' it now but everybody loved it back then (just like the snake) Frankie Valli - The Night

Beware, of his promise

Believe, what I say

Before, I go forever

Be sure, of what you say

So he paints a pretty picture

And he tells you that he needs you

And he covers you with flowers

And he always keeps you dreamin

If he always keeps you dreamin

You won't fear the lonely hours

If a day could last forever

You might like your ivory tower

But the night begins to turn your head around

And you know you're gonna lose more than you've found

Yes, the night begins to turn your head around

Quality never goes out of style!

Very true billb!

Great record. I think "I'm Gonna Change" has the edge, although I made sure that I got that Frankie Valli & The Four Seasons package that Warners put out a while back, which DOESN'T have "I'm Gonna Change" on but does have "The Night" on.

Both the Four Seasons and Frankie Valli solo stuff was great - all eras.

And I actually like "Who Loves You". So what's that all about.......? :wicked:

I think it's the key changes, the chords, the harmony's and arrangement on it. What a GREAT f&%kin' record. :D

It's just that I could never, like, actually admit that..............especially on here........... g.gif

Don't know it Kev. g.gif

The Montanas were a horrible white pop group who made a record called "She Let's Her Hair Down When The Sun Comes Up" or something like weren't they?

I didn't like the Velours version and I bet the Montanas version sucks big-time.

The fact that you said you couldn't dance to it and it had a strange beat kinda gave that one away LOL...... :D

But I am curious. Anyone gotta clip?

Murderbeat 100% agree with you on I'm Gonna Change - The Four Seasons!!

Another for me is "Move on up" Curtis Mayfield, as soon as I hear it I'm reminded that the world isn't all shat and that there are some special things that make ya smile and feel good. Never tired of the tune and heard it a zillion times.

A couple of tunes that I like - and have liked since I first heard them - but should not .......

Paul Anka - When We Get There

Charlie Gracie - He'll Never Love You Like I Do

Both records are very evocotive of a certain era , and that cannot be bad - sometimes .........

I am now getting worried H .......

If we were seperated at birth , you will now have to admit being as old as me laugh.gif ........

Jay ( and The Americans ) Traynor - U & O - is a great record , never be swayed by people telling you otherwise .........

A lot of people like the record , but unlike you and me , H , are afraid to come out of the closet biggrin.gif ........

Certain records , upon hearing them , will always evoke a special time and place for people , especially when they have not heard the said tune since the old king died - whether they like them or not .......

Tracks you should hate but never get sick of?

4 Seasons I'm Gonna Change is one of my all time favourites, and I don't feel guilty at all as it is good Northern Soul(IMHO).

One I certainly don't get, but love to hear is Round Robin "Kick That Little Foot Sally Ann". It just sounds like an acoustic kids song.

Otis Clay and his (original) version of "The Only Way is Up

Why would or should anyone have a reason to hate (as in the title of the thread) this magnificent piece of soul music by one of the greatest vocalists to ever draw breath?

Ian D

The Montanas weren't actually a bad beat group (I think they have a rare freakbeat track) but they probably got encouraged to sing the wrong type of song - their version of I'm Gonna Change never came out in the UK, I had one 18 months or so back and it's not that bad really - but pales in comparison to the other versions. I also have a feeling they may have come from round this way (Wolverhampton)

Because no two persons tastes are the same, simple as that. I couldn't sit through that record if you paid me to. I don't hate it, I just don't like it. Quite like it by Yazz though laugh.gif

You are, of course, correct Pete.

I must say I've played the soundfile of the Connie Stevens 45 on Bell that John Manship's auctioning quite a lot. The kind of record that should in theory make the Northern Soul scene a bit of a laughing stock but is actually quite brilliant in its own way. I think it would take a brave deejay to play it out in this day and age but, as JM says, this could have been absolutely massive in the heyday of the Casino or Cleethorpes Pier.

Maybe everyone looks for something different in a record. You can obviously see something in the Otis Clay record that I can't, but that is of course mainly because that type of sound, production and beat is out of my comfort zone which is mainly 4/4 type records from 15 years earlier.

My missus goes mad when she hears me play the odd "old skool" jungle track in the car and says it's not even music, how can I listen to that etc etc...well to me it's just got so much energy and I find it exciting. Same as most punk music, I like the energy but don't really listen to check out if the guitars are in tune.

I think the rare freakbeat track you might be referring to is called "Thats Where Happiness Began"......definately a Mids group and featured on the Brumbeat Cd.

Though I think you are way off the mark with Otis Clay.......a great late Wigan sound, that really hit its peak at Clifton Hall.

My shot - a five pound pick up, that was a whopper when Wigan bounced to 'TWBANTR' - Eddie Holman, 'Janice' - Skip Mahoney, 'Over The Top' - Roy Dawson, 'Ready For The Getdown' - ZZ & Co etc etc....and it is.....and I honestly still love it....'Keys To The City' - Omni.

Lyrically heartfelt and quite beautiful (in the bands approach to the delivery of those words), with drops built for the Northern scene at the time.

"I sit all alone, by the telephone, waiting for your call"

"BA-DI-YAP-BA-DOO-WAH!"

Love it.

THE MOMENTS 9 TIMES HATED IT FOR AGES NOW LOVE IT

That track sits in my Ritz memory bank, when Tavares - 'Heaven Must Be Missing An Angel' used to get pasted, usually at which point I disappeared from the dancefloor cussing (as youngsters do).

I still believe that that track was never one that should have had NS showcasing - but - now as an older bloke, what a feckin' magnificent production.

It was the 'GAP' advert from a few years back that made me listen to it with new ears.

What I find when HMBMAA comes on t'wireless , is that I find myself smiling , as it recalls that particular era you mentioned Barry , and my opinion of it back then ........

It was acceptable for the first times I heard it , but then it became irritating to my ears , developing in to my - like you again Barry - avoidence of it at all costs .........

I now , upon hearing it , find that the production of / on the record , is excellent , especially the lead vocals ........

Another record that I should not like , but do , is Shalimar's " Take That To The Bank " : possibly due to the infectious / catchy hook line of the instrumentation ..........
