thank you for your reply Ken.

if anyone can let me know how i can defo tell difference it would be very much appreciated. love the music and have collected records for past 30 years, mainly for my own pleasure. some of the boots i have are obvious but some i do not have a clue about. years ago it was more aceptable to play out boots but with the current climate of 'originals only' i am tying to separate them.

The "Modern" bootlegs with the instrumentals on the flip shouldn't be dismissed, as the instrumentals are really good (if you like instrumentals), and not available on original 45, so technically they pass the stringent OVO legislation and can be played out loud to a paying audience.

thank you all for your help, and to those who have sent pm's. it has all been very helpful.

i only wanted help in finding out if i had boots or orig but i am now thinking about the 'stringent OVO legislation' and when this law came into force - and was it passed by way of democratic proceedure??? did it require a 2/3 majority or just a simple majority to pass?

anyway i digress. a sincere thank you for the help i have been given

Im no dj but i think a lot of it is to do with the artists not benifitting from the boots when a lot of them are broke or had been ripped off.

Its not just about snobbery or the soul police imo.

Anyway just passing through........

A couple of quick replies, please no offence is meant.

- The "OVO Legislation" remark was very much "tongue in cheek" but I think most know where I'm coming from, on this one

- I've probably got it wrong with labelling the instrumental backed versions as "bootlegs" as I think Arthur Wright, the producer may have had something to do with them, and so are very possibly legal reissues.

- Although I wholeheartedly agree with the sentiments re:- Bootlegs, let's not forget that many artists got shafted by the companies and producers in the first place, so some rich bloke spending £1000 on an original still doesn't put food on the table of the impoverished artist, Ronnie Walker made virtually nothing from ANY of his recordings

Des, i took your remark as tongue in cheek - and assumed right in 'where you were coming from'.

i agree with your setiments and am very confused as to what i am allowed to play out. for example, the other brothers that was not issued but is now out on legitimatly on the kent label - can i play this? i have 'can i run to you' on the grapevine label - it is legit so can i play that - and so on - very confused?????? i understand & agree with some of the arguments on this subject but i dont know the rules so not sure what i am doing when trying to play the game (metiphorically speaking).

i am spending more money on boxes than records trying to separate the different issues / re-issues / boots frusty2.gif

I believe that the Turquoise Label Vocal / Instrumentals were In fact Re-Issues (RE: Arthur Wright) and now Extremely sought after.

Inspired by this question, I have featured these two in "The Sharp End Of Vinyl". Regarding Original Matrix Details.

One thing of Note on the Jackie Day, the "Without A Love" side Deadwax

is only half the width of the "Before It's Too Late" side.

I will be adding more Detail, as usual at work last night & tonight,

No Bank Holiday for me.

It's nice to have a break in between shifts though, thanks to Soul Source. :thumbsup:thumbsup.gif

i would love to believe the turquoise copy i have is an original however I have had two people send me personal messages giving me details out of manships bootleg guide; and it confirmes it is a boot

I bought mine of a reputal dealer years ago who told me mine was an orig - a few years later i was told it was a boot?

It didn't bother me that much until recently when I was informed of the OVO legislation

p.s. can anyone direct me to the Green Paper regarding the passing of this act; I wouldn't want to break the law hypocrite.gif

Mike. I,m as confused as you are now ............... HELP.

Not that the £20 is a reflection of a real or boot price because the person i bought it off is a guy that has in the past gave me tunes as presents cos he,s a mate, so the money side of it isnt a issue

I would love to help you Steve but I am no expert on these things - I just love the music and collect (mostly for personal pleasure). My knowledge is very limited; hence coming on here and asking those that do have the expertise & knowledge.

sorry mate but this thread is attracting interest so i think you will get a satisfactory answer. I am accepting that mine is a boot because no one else has told me any different - except the bugger who sold it to me whistling.gif

Mike just had a PM telling me its a geniune re-issue and a hard one to get at that so that clears it for me to play at Winsford on the 31st.

ACCORDING TO THE BOOTLEG GUIDE, THE JACKIE DAY ONE IS OK, IT'S THE MARY LOVE ONE THAT IS A REISSUE, THE ORIGINAL IS ON RED MODERN , AND HAS "THINK IT OVER BABY" ON THE OTHER SIDE. THE REISSUES WERE RELEASED ON TOURQUOISE COLOURED LABEL, AND HAD THE INSTRUMENTAL ON SIDE 2. ALTHOUGH IT DOES SAY, IT'S BECOMING A VERY RARE REISSUE

the above is one of the responses i recieved. another response said much the same thing.

hope this is of some use to you Steve.

Its a genuine re-issue then with the instrumental on the other side and not a bootleg so we,re ok

I like your attiude Anthony.

I am getting more & more suspicious of the OVO legislation  me-thinks this may be a passing of a law to ensure 'jobs for the boys'. Is this new law a way of restrict the minions in the lower fields; thus enabling the gentry to retain thier status?

Can anyone provide me with details of the Green Paper?

Has the Act been published for all to see - in order that we can become aware of these Laws and avoid a public hanging?

I am trying my best to stay within the Law regarding this subject, but I am finding it increasingly difficult when those who have voted in favour of (and compel observance to it) cannot provide sufficient evidence for its enactment. Nor can they provide imperitive evidence for its obedience!

Furthermore, the masses do not seem to give two hoots; as is it does nothing to protect thier rights - in fact it infringes on thier rights to hear certain songs unless they are at a venue where the DJ is rich enough to be able to purchase a copy.

Does anyone else think this is a clear case whereby - THE LAW IS AN ASS

I was a leaving party a few months ago, the neigbour's were there, friends from work, the cleaner and they played some great records, I had to ask the DJ what's that a different take on the one I know and low and behold all reissues and boots.

There was no fee to get in, I didn't travel 200 miles and no dancing, I f those records had been played after all of this I would go mad and ask for my money back. Ok I cant afford the records and wasn't in the right place at the right time to get a 25 count box but serious soul night should be serious records and keep your boots for wedding and leaving parties thank you very much.

There are plent of great 10 20 £ records out there to put a half decent set togeather without spending 2K.

Do I sound a bit Blue Peter their.
