I've just spent 40 minutes banging out a post that I lost as someone sent me a PM (sorry Mike  ), so on the back of that....

I'd like your views about a man who is a part of our/your history.

Dave has always championed the playing of older / underplayed / non - fashionable records in his spots from day # 1 , long before the term " oldies " was languished on the playing of such tunes .......

By doing so , he has established himself , and earned a solid reputation , as one of the NS scene's premier and creditable DJs .........

i agree one of the finest out there as a dj and as a person ......fantastic bloke!

cant think of one negative thing to say about dave at all

along with steve whittle is one of the most professional circuit!

one major difference however in todays oldies market is that like Searling and Winstanley at the casino Dave,Brian Rae and Keith Minshull were playing stuff EVERY week and had the chance to BREAK oldies just like newies..

this is really difficult thing to do these days due to glut of djs out there, limiting the opportunities to have more underplayed oldies getting more exposure..

I suppose I owe him a big debt...Started listening to him on Terry Christian's 'Barbed Wireless' on Radio Stoke. Dave would come on to the show and play three records, give the latest info on the scene and finish with the gig guide. This was around the mid '80s and I never missed a program, still have the tapes somewhere. This started to get me back into it. When he moved to Signal Radio with his own weekly show it was brilliant even if the reception in the south of Wolverhamton wasn't all ways reliable.

I have met him a few times and yes he is a smashing bloke, so genuine and enthusiastic. However I must finish with a negative...Saw him a few weeks ago at the Queen Mary ball room Dudley Zoo. He marched out of the toilet cubicle, out of the toilet without washing his hands :) so he's not perfect. Regards Ade

I'd like your views about a man who is a part of our/your history.

Dave Evison was the man who introduced a record and it became the template of my djing style......1976/7, middle of the dancefloor at Wigan, Dave Evison opens the mike and says:

'This is the sound of the Sapphires - and of course - Gotta have your love'.....

To most of you, it won't mean anything but for me it was like the scene in 'Fisher King' when Robin Williams is in the middle of Grand Central Station and time stands still and he is the only one who can see or hear anything....that was me - alone with the opening bars of the Sapphires....truely spiritual and for that reason DE can do no wrong :) Jo x

If David Evison is God,we know who the anti Christ is then, dont we yes.gif

I thanked David at a nighter a few years ago for keeping me it touch with the scene, through his radio shows, when I was lost in the wilderness years(ie off the nighter scene) Praise be the Evison, God of the oldies.

.....suppose it all depends on why he was in the cubicle....

I've got loads of great stories on Dave that prove he is far from perfect, but I'll be a good boy (for once) and not air them on here wicked.gif

I have a lot to thank Dave for.

I was a fan...Chapter.1:

Once upon a time, in a land far, far away (from where I live now!) I was a young and impressionable Soulie, and on my first trips to the Casino it was Dave's sets that I would really enjoy (alongside Searling and Rushbrooke). I still have the live-tapes and can recall him playing a diverse set from Billy Prophet through to Chuck Cissell...and come to think of it the Isley Bros' 'Take some time out for love' too, which is still a fave of mine.

Hop forward a handful of years to Chapter.2:

I was working at an HMV store when in walks Dave, 'Hello! I'm Dave and I'm your Charly Records rep!' Well, I was kinda gobsmacked, as being already a Northern Soulie I was already well aware of who he was! After realising that I knew what I was on about, my then store manager instatntly handed over the ordering of Charly stock to me from that point on! I would see Dave once per month on his visits and we struck up a good rapport...to the point of when Charly were looking to expand, he suggested I went for the position. He was also kind enough to sell me his copy of Howard Guyton...a disc I still treasure today as it graced the Casino decks whilst I, ahem, graced the dancefloor!

And then there were three...Chapter.3:

I took Dave's advice and went for the position of an albums salesman for Charly back in '85/'86. As it turned out Tony Warot was also going for the same job, but thankfully I got it...which did surprise me as I was still sooo young to be an album salesman (one usually became a singles-hyper, before 'progressing' onto albums). So, I therefore ended up working alongside Dave and indeed Brian Rae, who was also working there at the time...three Northern Soulies working for the same outfit! Very happy times!

Record Hunting with Dave...Chapter.4:

I recall sitting in on one of Dave's Signal Radio shows during my first week at Charly, when I went out with him to 'see how selling was done'! I crashed with Guy Hennigan for a few days and went out on the road with Dave on his round of record stores, and I think it was on the second day we hit Birmingham. Being the Soulies we were, he introduced me to paying visits to non-existing accounts 'in search of new business', which basically meant going to collector's stores in search of Northern! I did well at one place (Discery or Rays, can't recall) and found a Charles Anthony on Film Town, an Edward St.Ann on USA and a James Bryant on Renee for £20 the lot (or a lot less, certainly no more than £20). The evenings around Guy's were fun with discs all over the place...he played me Bunny Shivel ('Top Twenty'), which I liked and indeed he started to play it at Stafford over the coming months, but I digress.

Epilogue:

I recall when Dave's son Josh was born, and noting how proud he was...he was walking on cloud nine with stories of how Josh would play for Stoke City one day! He was so proud and inspiring in his approach to fatherhood.

I don't get to see Dave much nowadays, but on the rare occasions we do bump into each other we have lots to reminisce about and I echo previous member's comments in that Dave is genuine and a great bloke...and is a legend on this scene of ours.

If you're reading this Dave, keep on keeping on, mate and thanks for everything. Respect.

About a million years ago there was a bunch of young teenage lads in Stoke-on-Trent who all got into Soul at the same time. I was one of 'em, Dave Evison was another.

I don't know anyone else still on the scene from those early days.

I was almost as proud as Dave when he got his first DJing spot - he was one of us :-)

...and I was delighted to find that he had that bit of magic that makes a good, a very, very good, oldies dj.

Knows how to DJ Northern Soul properly, had a vast amount of experience behind the decks, and if you're after a some Soul Mugs he's a good man to see  .

I remember sometimes when the floor cleared he would amuse me over the mike and say things like - "Take pity on a poor defenceless DJ" or in Wigan Casino - "If you used to go the Wheel you will know this one, and if you didn't, don't worry about the start, this is Brooks and Jerry".

Perfect or not, he has been, and still is a great + for the Northern Soul scene.

The funniest incident re Dave ---i recall was when he got to do the last hour at Wigan(Russ hadn,t come back) when Dave realised at 20 to 8 he didn,t have any of the 3 before 8 records with him----or when he announced a record as a "real flour packer at the torch".

Nice to see him again ay Guy,s 50 th.Hope his team get beat at home today tho( i,m a Hull C. FAN!!)

nope, can't think who it was either ?

I hope his team get beat, I look at two results first every week - Port Vale (hoping in vain for a win) and Stoke, hopng for them to lose.

One thing me and Dave never discuss, as we should be mortal enemies :-)

anyone in touch with him btw? I haven't seen or heard from him in years ... but then I haven't seen or heard from anyone in years...

Do not let Dustbin hear you say that , or you will have the TSNBTNOTHS police knocking at your door .........

Contrary to the rumour . Dave is not attempting to have sex with Tony Pulis following Stoke's promotion to the

Premiership yesterday  .........

As I have stated in one of the first posts , Dave is one of the scene's top DJs , and has been so , for a long time , a title he has earned through merit , and is a jolly decent and upstanding fellow , one I am proud to call a mate ........

Hi Frank, Hope you're well. Nice to see you on here.

Ah, well Dave did a spot for us at Bury Town Hall this month, I nearly told Michelle at B.E.N. to let you know. First time I think he'd DJ'd for us that I remember) Events clashing elsewhere always prevented him getting up to us).

Dave's a total hero of Neil's and it was great that we finally have his name on one of our flyers!.

I'm certain there are a lot of today's popular DJ's who have been massively influenced by Evo..

Frank - I'll get message to you next time we manage to bring him back to Bury. :)

Always had alot of time for Dave- I hadnt seen him in over 20 years until about 4 years ago he was playing a venue in Edinbugh. I went up to him on the decks and he just stared at me and he turned and said to his mate- I havet seen this bloke for over 20 years and last time I saw him he sold me his Mini.

Thats Dave all over - remebers everything -We chatted for about 20 mins about the 70s. It would have been longer but he was about to do his spot. One of the top 5 Djs anyone would mention when talking about the Past of Northern soul!

Posted

He still blushes when I say so, but Evo has been a hero of mine since the late 70's and remains so to this day.

As a starry eyed 15 year old, I used to perster the f**k out of him some weeks at Wigan, simply because his Mrs at the time worked with my Mum for a short spell and I thought this gave me some sort of pre-ordained connection with him!!

Unlike so many of that era, Dave was never above chatting with the hoi-polloi, sharing a laugh and being seen to have fun at venues and remains so to this day. Always the consumate professional behind the decks and one of those rare people who can actually project their own enthusiasm through a sound system and into the psyche of the people he is entertaining.

Also, Dave is one of a fairly rare breed of Northern Soul DJ in that he is frequently to be found - of all places - on the dance floor! Good on yer Dave, a dancing DJ is, IMHO, always going to have the edge when it comes to pitching a set to a crowd or a particular atmosphere in a gig.

After a bit of a rollercoaster ride, in some respects, over recent years, it is so nice to see that Dave has found the absolute happiness (and Soulmate) he truly deserves in his lovely wife Sarah. I couldn't be happier for you Dave.

If Northern Soul be the food of life, Dave Evison sits as a life member at the top table in my book. A real gent, a true lover of what he does for the scene and probably far, far too modest of the contribution he has made to this scene of ours in nealy 40 years of giving people the time of their lives.

How true, great guy , great D.J., and fantastic humanoid

with long suffering wifey( great lady is Sarah).

Did a fantastic spot at Goodyears in honour of Robert Pomroy(poma), always a joy to hear him play.

Yet Dave would`nt consider himself a god, not when you witness him bowing down (playfully .....l hope ) to another D.J.

Suppose thats how it should be, Dave is humble enough to show appreciation to fellow D.J.`s and give credit where it`s due.

What a star

It was like listening to the box of crap pressings that you had hidden away. Baby Love by The Supremes especially sticks in my mind.
