Dave Evison Is God

Recommended Posts

The first time I ever heard Dave DJ was in Mr M's at the Casino. A fantastic spot that was filled with energy!!! Which included Jackie Wilson - Who Who Song, Apollas - Mr Creator, Mike Post - Afternoon of the rhino etc etc.

Dave as I recall found tunes like the Majestics and the Steinways, as well as countless other timeless classics.

I can't recall Dave playing any walk around tunes ever, always dancers and always floor pleasers.

Nice one Dave

I used to listen to him on the radio in the early eighties and how he used to put up with Terry Christian's annoying comments with great grace, remember him playing Jaime Saul's top 3 and Channel 3 being one of them (always ahead of his time Jaime!) and thus I always think of Jaime when I hear it, God rest him.

Also remember him being one of the few DJs you'd see having a good old dance at Wigan - which goes a long way in my book !

I agree with all of the comments about Dave being a great guy. However, I do wonder if any of you ever had to suffer some of his Wigan spots, or "comedown time" as we used to call it. It was like listening to the box of crap pressings that you had hidden away. Baby Love by The Supremes especially sticks in my mind.

Maybe your bad memories, but credit where it's due, he stood the test of time? Love his spots or hate em'

I`m not too proud to say Dave played a major factor in me being around today. I listened to his signal shows in the late 80s and that really got me into the Northern scene, started attending events and the rest is history...! Top bloke, still love to have a chat with him when our paths cross, usualy at Nantwich....we always have a laugh about how he got me into it in the first place! Lovely man...

I vividly remember first hearing about Dave when he wrote the sleevenotes to 'rare soul uncovered volume 1' as a spotty teen in 1983 or 4 just starting to discover this music. Writing a succinct few paragraphs on the rare soul scene is difficult, but he managed it with aplumb, if you've got it you'll know what I mean.

Then of course came the sleevenotes to 'The Northern Soul Story vol 1', as above.

However, Gt Yarmouth 1991 both his spots in the 'Northern' room and on the radio showed da man got taste and he introduced me to a wider appreciation of black american music, eg TJ Williams, Channel 3, Dena Johnson..

REGARDLESS OF PRICE.

Thanks Dave.

Jim

I suppose I owe him a big debt...Started listening to him on Terry Christian's 'Barbed Wireless' on Radio Stoke. Dave would come on to the show and play three records, give the latest info on the scene and finish with the gig guide. This was around the mid '80s and I never missed a program, still have the tapes somewhere. This started to get me back into it. When he moved to Signal Radio with his own weekly show it was brilliant even if the reception in the south of Wolverhamton wasn't all ways reliable.

I have met him a few times and yes he is a smashing bloke, so genuine and enthusiastic. However I must finish with a negative...Saw him a few weeks ago at the Queen Mary ball room Dudley Zoo. He marched out of the toilet cubicle, out of the toilet without washing his hands  so he's not perfect. Regards Ade

Never washed his hands !! Obviously his mum taught him not to pee on his fingers. lol.

At least Dave Evison exists, you don't have to just believe that he does....unlike God, who has provided no definitive proof of his existence whatsoever. If he was there you wouldn't have to believe he existed, just like I don't have to belive in my McVities chocolate biscuits 'cos I know they are in front of me! In that respect, Dave is better than God, IMHO, but then so is everyone else........

Hopefully this thread will end shortly, otherwise Dave and Sarah will start billing Goldsoul for Ronaldo type wages. :D

As a DJ/promoter maybe I can offer a brief insight as to why 'Dave is God'

For those who are unaware how he developed the Oldies scene before the word was actually used within NS circles, let me enlighten you....more importantly why haven't you read it in my book

Dave Evison stood behind the decks in 1974 watching my DJ box while I went to the loo.

The venue was Top of the World, Stafford(yes long before the All Nighter of the 80's). Keith Minshull and I were the residents on a Monday.

Losing my train of thought while talking to the manager Tony Marshall, I realised the record had ended and flew downstairs, while observing panicky Dave searching for a suitable track to play.

My box was locked, leaving only the Saturday night jocks pop/disco singles available.

Dave took 'Move On Up'-Curtis Mayfield mumbled a few words and to my amazement...the floor was rammed. Remember, the Northern scene back then was totally fixed on the current biggies/Rarities at the time. Wigan, The Mecca etc had no outlet or market for Don Covay 'Its Better To Have' and such like.

Dave opened the doors to a more relaxed, less intense way of listening and indeed talking about Northern 45's....in fact he became The Pope of Northern Soul.

People often ask why I use the same names at the Stokes, Blackpools, Whitby's etc. A no brainer for us...they are the most popular and best loved by the masses.

Dave will be on stage at 11pm on Saturday at the UK's premier All nighter venue in his hometown, delivering full floors to a 40 year variety pick n mix from The Matador-Major Lance to I'm Gonna Walk-Mickey Lanay....now that's talent backed up with credibility, likeabilty and most of all ABILITY!

Arise SIR DAVE :D

I've just spent 40 minutes banging out a post that I lost as someone sent me a PM (sorry Mike  ), so on the back of that....

I'd like your views about a man who is a part of our/your history.

Yer, I'd put him up there with Francis (saint, lover of birds, the feathered variety), Anthony et al.

Dave probably saved my sanity... no, really. I was stuck indoors during a long period of illness throughout the early 90's. Would've gone stir crazy had it not been for Dave's show on Signal Radio. Really felt part of the family, as he chirped away talking about Mary... an' his soul mugs... incidentally, does anyone have one of his soul mugs...?

Love his music, his quips and his all round friendly nature. Yep, Dave's a bit of a star...

Hi Mrs Evison , can you please say hi to Dave for me , we go back a long way but havnt seen him in years . We share the same passion for music and football but where we differ is our teams ( Wolves to his Stoke ) . We have debated our diffrences on many occasion at all nighters over the years ... as you do

Many years ago I sat in with him at Signal Radio and watched in awe at his enthusiasm and passion for the show and his listeners , hope to see him soon around and about cheers Paddy (from Wolves obviously)

I think Dave Evison was probably the first non Peterborough DJ I saw in the flesh, so to speak. The first thing I was struck by was the manic delivery on the decks, and how enthusiastic he was if you collared him in the record bar. I would never have dared to approach someone like Soul Sam back then, but with Dave you just knew you wouldn't be despatched in 30 seconds. People like Dave would make you 'sit up in class'. Some nights I used to think, if I hear Cecil Washington (or any other 'top newie mega rarity' being being hammered to death) again, I'm gonna feckin' top somebody. Dave provided welcome relief in such moments when an intro like Maurice Williams 'Being Without You' would lift my spirits. Long may he run...

As well as seeing him & Princess Sarah out & about at soul do's most weekends, I sit 2 rows infront of them in the infamious Boothen End at the Britannia Stadium.

He is a gent & top bloke but too say he's been like a big kid in a sweet shop at the match this season is a bit of an understatement.

About a million years ago there was a bunch of young teenage lads in Stoke-on-Trent who all got into Soul at the same time. I was one of 'em, Dave Evison was another.

I don't know anyone else still on the scene from those early days.

I was almost as proud as Dave when he got his first DJing spot - he was one of us :-)

...and I was delighted to find that he had that bit of magic that makes a good, a very, very good, oldies dj.

Yet another nod of respect in Daves direction:

I taped Dave's set on my first visit to the Casino when I was far too young to even attend! Tracks I recall from 80/81 which I will always associate with Dave include the Isleys - Take some time out for love; Chuck Cissell - Don't tell me you're sorry; DeeDee Sharpe - Happy 'bout the whole thing; Billy Prophet - What can I do...all illustrating his diversity.

I first really met him when he turned up at the HMV store I was working at (my first job!) when he was a rep for Charly Records...I was gobsmacked at meeting a Casino DJ...and right from the off he proved to be a top bloke, friendly, helpful and with no airs and graces. A few years later I also ended up working at Charly after Dave recommended me...Brian Rae was also at Charly at the time, so you can imagine the topics of conversation at the sales meetings!?! I also recall spending a few days with Dave out on the road (being the new rep in training!), staying at Guy Hennigans house and also going along to Signal Radio and sitting in on a show...he was a real professional behind the mic I can assure you...very 'radio'.

Many years have passed since those days, but on the rare occasions we do bump into each other it is always a pleasure to reminisce with Dave...a man I respect...I also still have the Howard Guyton demo he sold me some 25 years ago...the same disc he spun at the Casino and I had danced to there!

He supports Stoke City?

.

. Dave is one of those guys who epitomised the enthusiasm behind the music during the earlier days. He was very active as a punter before he went behind the decks, being a notable dancer, particularly when he sported one of those black gloves.

. My last memory of Dave Evison was standing nearby to him on the Boothen End. During a time when this small blonde apprentice had just broken into the team. Every time he touched the ball, Dave would encourage him with a gusto. It was, "Inchy this! Inchy that! He just kept banging on about him. I can remember his glazed expression after he had just laid on a ball for the veteran John Ritchie to score. I'm sure he must have been related to this Inchy guy, the diminutive Adrian Heath, such was his vocal support. But there again, Dave has always been an enthusiast whether it be for his football, music or friendships.

:boxing:I wonder what Carl Jung would of made out of this statement from a middle aged man in 2009?? "Dave Everson is GOD?" It reminds me of the 1st time I saw the phrase "Rules OK!" early 7ts in Leeds on an estate just of the Hyde Park (forgot the name of estate but it was rough, Kids had a barricade and bonfire on the street and decided who came and went) When I first saw the statement LEEDS UNT Rule KO! it was an exciting remark? of course they do? so do I KO!, a few months later and all football teams Ruled KO!, the power of the statement really meant something, in the same way as "Dave 4 Marie" does.

:chinstroke:"Dave Everson is GOD" whenever I see the word GOD I always translate it by putting another O in the word to see if the authors remark stands up to the meaning of the word? so GOD becomes Good AH that's Better don,t you think? :good: "Dave Everson is Good" and you get your answer of course he is, in fact he is a very decent Bloke, one of the best on the scene, I first met him at the Casino don't know what year as he has always been around, typical Potteries Man, in fact I can honestly say I have never met a bad person from the Stoke area, with 1 exception Keith Minshull! good old Keith Moody F**ker but probably the best Moody F**ker of all time.

:king: Dave Everson is a genuine Bloke even though I am still waiting for my competition Prize that I won on Signal Radio (About when the Impressions Started)*** that's a gag line if ever I saw one? "HE IS A GOOD MAN"
