Harry Crosby Posted May 7, 2008 Posted May 7, 2008 Right heres my two pence worth, one of the best days out ive had in years was the family dayer at the lowton a few years ago, barbacue outside, kids dancing competition[put me to shame] just a great day well organized, imho the few younger people who do attend soul do`s should be encouraged that attitude of "DIV" days are over, certain people in york when i was a kid and they know who they are, used to take great pleasure in making me feel un welcome on the scene it was only the love of the scene that kept me going, i know a lot of people who dropped out because of this attitude, and some wich i personally find pathetic still have there high horse saddled,if we use the closed shop attitude its gonna be DEAD end of story, this dosn`t happen on the continent where there is a healthy younger crowd, and as for your comment ken your bang on right, we seem to forget its all about enjoying ourselves and it allways will be that way for me
Dave Posted May 7, 2008 Posted May 7, 2008 I meant what I said - if you want to be involved, and people to take you seriously, on here then get involved Just as a matter of interest, the original question was "can the northern scene be attractive to youngsters", NOT "can soul source be...". The two things are not the same. I get the impression some of the young contributors get to more events than a few of the "keyboard dancers" who write on here.
Madmandy Posted May 7, 2008 Posted May 7, 2008 Theres plenty of young ones, dont worry. i dont say owt else Hi Alex I love the Amy Macdonald tune "youth of today " sums it up dont you think? Excellent!!! Welcome to the good ship SS and the scene mate I've got a couple of dancing clips on youtube ( and Im being asked to teach some young 20 somethings cos they cant be taught anywhere else)!! so surely Im not that sad?? I also know a chap who teaches the basic steps to anyone who wants to "hit the dancefloor" without feeling embarrassed Im classed as the sad oldie refered to further up the thread who goes out on the floor to dance and puts off the younger generation!! Welcome young man you can bump into me on the dance floor anytime ( so long as you apologise) Madmandy

Very true.. but my observation was about the younger posters on here, and their posts are mainly complaints about reactions to them on here - just suggesting that they might find reactions more favourable to them if they got more involved in other topics on here.. slightly off the original topic, yes, but related...

Guest swoz Posted May 7, 2008 Posted May 7, 2008 Iv'e heard a rumor that Sam walked past a box full of boots and they miraculosly turned into originals! Well the seller insisted they were Part the Red Sea? most of 'em can't even part their own hair these days! sorry trevski youngblood YOUR IN FOR A SHOCK I CAN TURN WINE IN TO WATER AND DEFINATELY PART YOU FROM YOUR MONEY. YOU'VE A LOT TO LEARN FROM US OLD FARTS. BUT IN THE MEAN TIME GET THE EXPERIANCE AND ENJOY EVERY MOMENT. REMEMBER THIS. AS WE ARE,YOU WILL BE, AS WE WERE, YOU WILL NEVER BE.

I haven't had a hair to part since '95! Funniest post I've read all week! Cheers Swoz! Edited May 7, 2008 by Trevski
Barry Posted May 8, 2008 Author Posted May 8, 2008 Some belters in there, I'll leave it up to the straight-minded to pick out the relevant quotes. Just an observation but it strikes me as strange that the younger members proclaiming themselves as the future of the soul scene only pop up on here and comment when this subject comes up You know why that is Rachel, and the word 'strange' (??) don't enter into it? It seems to me that it is mainly because the younger element that are involved with this, (any), scene tend not to have the hierachial back up on this scene and also on this message board that, maybe say, you have, therefore it isn't as easy for them to pipe up as freely as you nad I can. The only things that the young things feel able to respond to, obviously, are topics that relate to or maybe involve themselves/topics that they are able to reply to - namely the ones you are castigating those same youngsters for responding to. After all we all have an opinion, don't we? This question wasn't about age, read between the lines, it was about the longevity of the scene and this music... you seem to be dividing the issue into an age thing, which is short sighted. Without youth and youngblood (Smith), surely the death-warrant has already been issued for the NS scene? Remember mine is only a view, my view alone, and not a truth. You were a baby at one time on this scene, and you're still here. Therefore, you shouldn't relegate certain relevant the views from others on this subject, simply for the fact that they are made from individuals that are younger than yourself.

BUT IN THE MEAN TIME GET THE EXPERIANCE AND ENJOY EVERY MOMENT. REMEMBER THIS. AS WE ARE,YOU WILL BE, AS WE WERE, YOU WILL NEVER BE. You know this is true, when I was 17,18,19,there were some fantastic dancers, the youngsters see some of us old farts, and think " I can do that " no disrespect to the young dancers of to day,but the are just not in the same street as some of us were back in the day, they just dont know how to do it ,they dont have the benchmark dancers we had, and I dont mean bloody spins and gymnastics Bazza
Guest Marcelle Posted May 9, 2008 Posted May 9, 2008 am afraid i see this stuff all the time now it apears on soul source very angry and opinionated but who exactly are you talking about because in all my years on this scene i have never ever seen or heard of people you decribe ??who exactly are you talking about ????? fogeys on the dance floor???? i was at maxims i did not see many 25 year olds ??? who are the mystery horible people that hate young people and want to keep the soul scene to themselves ??? not only that but where are all these teribley hard done to young people that are so hated ???? aniway dont hold back let it all out lol , am afraid i would be in my eliment as a promotor if loads of young people tuned up and i dont know any body that would act the way you describe ?? Good morning mepaul50 I am glad that your experiences of "youngsters" in Soul venues has been nothing but positive. I can appreciaite that as you do not know me, nor do you know what experiences I have had over a few years as a Soul punter, or the last five years as a co-promotor of NCS, that you may see me as being "angry & opinionated" towards "old fogeys". But like all people in "life" my opinions are based on my "experiences" not yours or others. Here are some of my experiences ........ I have had people in our venues come up to me as a promotor & question (at times angererly) this has not just been on 1 occassion nor has it been everytime we have a venue on, but it has happened. "why have you let them in?" as they point to the "youngsters" on the dance floor ! Usually they follow this with "guess its for the money"!! My answer has been "the same reason I let you in" sometimes this has been enough to end the conversation at other times its not .... I took my 15year old son with me (6years ago) to his first Soul do he was made very welcome by all there, (he enjoyed sharing his Mums passion for that night) but it was not something he wanted to continue with .... was he made welcome because he was with me his Mum or because he was a "young" person ? A few years later he went with his friends to a local Soul do (without me) they left early ... WHY ? it certaintly wasnt because he felt welcomed ! they felt very uncomfortable "being watched all the time, ridiculed when they got up to dance" (no my son does not take any chemicals) & yes he does know the "ettiqutte" of being at a Soul do ...... "no drinks on dance floor, ect ...... So you see my opinions are based on my experiences, not yours, Am I angry .... with people who believe they own the scene YES I AM .... Am I angry ...... When youngsters are not welcomed YES I AM .... & they are MY OPIOIONS based on MY EXPERIENCES not yours nor others ... Chris answered re numbers at Maxines .... & actually if you are that bothered by the numbers we had or do not have in ..... Do what we tell everyone who asks us on the night ..... "Do a head count yourself" take care Marcelle x

Guest WPaulVanDyk Posted May 14, 2008 Posted May 14, 2008 great comments at the end there. I am 27 and still young being on this scene and i don't know how i would fit if i didn't have my dad i suppose being or going out for a while now a good what 5 years means that if i went anywhere now by myself i would go and have no problems just the question of how come your here alone. Something that would be rare. I just wish there was people and i am sure there are many who are willing to allow younger people weather it's 18 year olds starting now or even me at 27 that you will welcome them and if they want to know something they can ask and get feedback but maybe that's not so easy coming on soul source when you know some of the people and what to expect. Lucky there have been some here willing to help me but i know some in Peterborough so i am asured if i get nothing here i am helped by the ones locally
