boba Posted April 26, 2008 Posted April 26, 2008 Magnetics (Bonnie/Allrite) Hi Andy. I want to confirm that the bonnie / alrite group are definitely the same. Doesn't the alrite record have no group harmony on it (maybe I'm mistaken), which would make it unlikely? what is the source of this, did you talk to a group member? Thanks a lot.
Dave Moore Posted April 26, 2008 Posted April 26, 2008 Andy, Fantastic pic. Was given the cold shoulder by Mr Browner a couple of years back when looking to tie a few of Harry Balk's details up. Point blank refused to chat about back in the day. (Harry mentioned the fact that Browner had at least two songs on Dena Barnes in the can also). Spoke at length a couple of weeks ago about The Magnetics with Rob Thomas and this pic was mentioned. I agree with you and I think the Allrite and the Bonnie group are possibly one and the same. Or at least there is a lineage there. Volumes = Magnetics?

I agree that there is maybe or even probably a connection given that they are detroit groups with the same name, but I would want more evidence besides the fact that the labels look similar (via one of the label designs) before saying so. Isn't there also like a 5 year difference between the groups? Did you talk to that Leroy that you said was the lead of the alrite group? I'm very interested in finding out more evidence about this. Thanks for the info and the pic -- is the pic of the allrite group / lineup? Thanks.

If this is a photo of the Magnetics on Bonnie then we have proof that they are a different group and share no indervidual member as I can see no resemblence to any member of this photo with the photo's I have of the Volumes. Regards Paul doesn`t mean a thing that. Sometimes you only have to listen to a record to know who the vocalist is. ive always said that the volumes and magnetics were intwind and also theres more than one group called the volumes and magnetics. again if you listen hard enough you can tell its the same singer on lady in green and count the days by the magnetics but not when im with my baby. and its the same fellow on the volumes same old feeling and am i losing you on karen, but not aint gonna give you up.....just listen dave Just to keep the thread on track - The groups we're trying to etsbalish the lineage of are: The Volumes on Audio Arts/Impact and The Magnetics on Bonnie. IF the Magnetics photo is confirmed to be The Bonnie group then it surely is fair to assume that The Impact Volumes are a different group? To not have a single member the same would seem to lean towards them being different groups. You have a point Dave, reference the similar vocals on certain discs but... remember when The Soundmasters 45 was deemed DEFINITELY Morris Chestnut? With the groups (if they are separate groups), being linked by Duke Browner and Harry Balk, it does lead to a set of complicated circumstances that's for sure. Edited April 27, 2008 by Dave Moore

The Detroit Magnetics are possibly the same group that recorded on Allrite (Because of the Detroit association of the label). However, according to Dennis Coffey (Who played on both group's sessions) are NOT The Volumes recording under a different name as was once thought.

(Also If Mr Coffey says it's so then I'd rely on his memory rather than a set of ears).

Morris was in the group, Robert Jones being the 4th member. Roy sounds very very much like Morris but if you really listen and compare you can hear the difference.
Dave Pinch Posted April 27, 2008 Posted April 27, 2008 "quote" Just listen to Spyder Turner - Stand by me then tell me you know who the vocalist is.
