Guest Matt Male Posted May 5, 2008 Posted May 5, 2008 Why do you feel that because someone has a fabulous collection they want to be dj's.Can a person not collect for the love of the music. One of the scenes problems today is too many fellas djing with only a handful of tunes bought just for this purpose. This is another reason why a lot of venues keep starting ....they all want to be dj's. Iknow a lot of fellas with fabulous collections who refuse to dj at all. I can understand someone collecting just for the love of the music and not all collectors want to be DJs (fair enough that's their choice). I agree with you that there are probably too many people out there with a box full of oldies/boots/reissues DJing week in week out. On the other hand i can't understand why someone would just sit at home with a fabulous collection and not want to share it with other people. This music is to be listened to in a dancehall, over a great sound system that does it justice, with loads of like-minded people and danced to. If i hear a great tune, i want someone else to hear it as well, not file it away in a record box never to see the light of day or only ever hear it in a crappy box room over an old set of Technics while i sit on my own. Where's the fun in that? If they truly loved it, they'd share it. That's what this whole thing is about isn't it?

KevH Posted May 5, 2008 Posted May 5, 2008 ====== its a sad part of todays scene where there a quality guys & girls who dont get a look in when they have fabulous collections of vynil and have nowhere to air them. been said before but its a big circle isnt it. - too many djs and not enough venues to go round..???? just have to be patient and wait your turn - for some that big time will never come but must also its not the end of the world either - learned that lesson a long time ago.. I thought it was a "given" on SS that there's too many venues . Now too many "dj's". .I use the term loosely as most never went to DJ School, just learnt to cue in records with minimum deathly silence between tracks. . Is there something else going on, on this thread that i'm missing??

Guest gordon russell Posted May 6, 2008 Posted May 6, 2008 ==== hi terry i know what ure saying.my own reasons are as follows: im lucky ive got a fab collection and do get a fair few gigs at different venues plus i run my own do as im continually buying stuff 24/7 and get excited over new sounds ,whether they are brand new or forgotten oldies that ive never heard and WANT to share my tastes with everyone else. thats why i love djing plus theres no GREATER feeling than spinning your discs to a full floor. my problem i became obsessive a few years ago and was really frustrated at not getting anywhere and it was taking over , it took a harsh lesson at a weekender (the same one as this discussion as it happens) to realise that djing on the northern scene isnt the B and End all and learn to accept what is is! there is a danger you can take all of this FAR too seriously when you should be chilling and enjoying the music.... im happy with my lot now and have a great venue in nuneaton with a 2nd to come where we're looking to break some more sounds and offering an alternative to oldies....i try and give newer djs a chance as well to spin some sounds in the big room as one day ...the soul sams and brian raes of this world wont be spinning forever and needs new blood to take over... soulful regards mark THATS EXACTLY MY POINT, a lot of folk instead of going out and about enjoying great nights and great tunes they are hell bent on being djs.Too many are absolutely dire in my opinion. They think that you just buy tunes for the intention of djing. All the best djs I know couldn't care less wether they dj or not.......all the W****rs stand behind the decks at some tin pot venue playing crap and thinking they are the bees knees.

Spot on ! Also, most of the collectors with big collections also have them filed under label order, group, solo, Detroit, Chicago, West Coast, etc. etc. so to put a small dj box together can take a lot of time. Then you have to put them all back again Just a thought re all the dj's out there...... There are a lot of dj's with good records, but, there are only a few dj's with great records !

Maria O Posted May 6, 2008 Posted May 6, 2008 surely a DJ is booked because of his/her collection and not because they are a punter at said venue. I often go to a do just to see a DJ thats booked... never to venture back again Now here's a girl I can relate to . Personally I don't care what venues the dj attends. I care about the music they play and how they put their records together. Once they step off the stage, they're just another person in the room (unless off course, you know them). Obviously, the dj who is enjoying themselves on stage brings that extra passion, but not everyone smiles when a sound hits them and the 'miserable' ones did have a choice to be up there too. Overall, it's about the sounds and not the person. This is not a stage play, with the related actor networking required for the non oscar winners. However - as a mini-promoter, I would add that having a dj attend the venue before their booking date is a nice bonus. It shows that they care about what they bring to your night and want to understand what your event is about. We all have busy lives and petrol ain't cheap, so that can't be expected from most. And for me, it rests with the promoter to go out there and get the right mix of everything they want to bring back to their event. Hope that makes sense. not slept much lately. m

Dave West Posted May 9, 2008 Posted May 9, 2008 SEEMS TO ME J.B YOU MISSED OUT THE MOST IMPORTENT THING IN THIS DEBATE, YOU HAVE LEFT OUT THE D.Js WHO DO SUPPORT VENUES BUT DON'T GET A LOOK IN , DUE TO THE FACT THEY ARE NOT PART OF "THE CLICK" SORRY BABE BUT THIS HAS REALLY GOT MY BACK UP. THERE ARE DJs OUT THERE WHO HAVE GOT THE RECORDS BUT NO MATTER WHAT VENUE THEY SUPPORT,THE SAD PART IS THAT SO CALLED "PROMOTERS "DON'T GIVE THEM A LOOK IN.. YOUVE HIT THE `NAIL ON THE HEAD WITH THAT REMARK. IF YOURE NOT PART OF THE "CLICK" YOU DONT GET A LOOK IN, THINK SOMETIMES ITS A QUESTION OF I'LL SCRATCH YOUR BACK YOU SCRATCH MINE. WITH MANY DJ'S ALSO BEING PROMOTERS. THEREFORE NOBODY HAS TO PAY FOR A GUEST, HOWEVER , THE DOWNSIDE IS IF YOU MISS ONE VENUE YOU CAN SEE EXACTLY THE SAME LINE UP A WEEK LATER AT A SIMULAR VENUE DOWN THE ROAD. THIS CAN ONLY LEAD TO A DROP IN ATTENDANCE...SURELY A VARIETY OF DJ'S AND SOUNDS IS WHATS NEEDED TO KEEP THE SCENE FRESH
Ernie Andrews Posted May 9, 2008 Posted May 9, 2008 Ive had 5 glasses of wine and Im on a crusade. I would support any venue I could get to but I have a young 4yr old daughter that I spent thousands trying to see her. IM a league 2 DJ who should be given more opportunites instead of the bloody classic big ticket DJs. But thats all the punters want! Sorry when the dinks in the Wits out!

THERES HOPE FOR YA YET THEN,MOST OF THE TOP PLACES....DON'T BOTHER WITH BIG TICKET LOADS OF RARE CLASSICS DJ'S.
