Info Please - The Intentions. Also Pye R&b 45s

Recommended Posts

Are the Intentions who recorded on Up Tight anything to do with the Philips / Kent outfit or a completely different group?

And on a totaly different topic, I have about a dozen Blues / Rnb 45s on the old yellow and black Pye label - the R&B series with those letters printed in the centre. Amongst them are a few EPs - would these have originally been issued with picture sleeves or just in regular record company ones?

Thanks as always for any help :shades:

They should have sleeves mate.

As for the Intentions, they were a white group on Philips weren't they - from Philadelphia...that record dealer Dennis Brennan was in the group.

Cheers,

I think the Up Tight lot are white as well, and the 45 might be a bit garagey - but I like that kind of stuff anyway. Have to see when it turns up.

Cheers Chalky :shades:

I actually nicked that pic off Dennis' site a while ago. I was going to write to him and ask him (and probably still will do) but I thought I might get a quicker answer from this board.

Anybody know anything about the Up Tight lot then?

Hi,

There are as far as I can make out four different groups called The Intentions :-

Intentions - Dancing fast, dancing slow. / My love she's gone. - Kent 455 (1966)

Intentions - Don't forget that I love you. / The night rider (inst) - Philips 40428 (April 1967)

Intentions - I'm losing your love. / I'll search the world. - Uptight 196810

Intentions - Cool summer night. / Time. - Uptown 710 (1965)

The Intentions on Philips was made up of Ronald Brennan, formerly of the R&B group The Exciting Invictas, Brian Humble (lead), Jack Valatti, Dennis Brennan.

All the best,

Martin

I always thought that the Philips and Kent groups were the same. Had another listen and it looks like I was using my "painted on" ears (ie for ornamental purposes only!) blush.gif

Cheers to everyone for the info. I've written to Dennis and if I get a reply that sheds any more light on the Up Tight lot I'll post it here

Sure have - sells for about £150 here, providing you're talking about "I'm Losin' Your Love" on Up Tight!! Stunning record and all, with a lovely horn intro/break.

Come along to our Solid Hit Soul nite at Vivo's in London on Saturday 16th April to hear it, along with more!!

Not easy to follow all these twists and turns but the songs I know that uses the same backing track are these.

Carpets "I Just Can't Win" ViJ

Mandells "I Just Can't Win" Moneytown (I still want and need a copy of this btw!)

Intensions (with an S) "I Love You" Blue Light (this is a different song, different lyrics but same backing track. It's alright I guess but I was pretty disappointed when I heard it, expecting it to be as good as Carpets/Mandells)

Yes, very good, like an uptempo version of the Capitols "I Got To Handle It"

link

When I first heard this I thought to myself it sounded like a cover of the Capitols, I don't have it to hand but do you think it is a cover or just a version that 'borrows' a lot? I think the Capitols "I Got To Handle It" is very uptempo BTW!

I just refreshed my memory and answers myself, it is a cover. I think the Capitols is better.

I have not forgotten it, but it does not have the same backing as the others I mentioned. I keep hearing that the flip of the Intentions on Moneytown is supposed to be good, is it? I think The Intentions take on "I Just Can't Win" is a pretty weak one, so I wonder if the flip is much better. I have heard yet another, slower, version of "I Just Can't Win" (same lyrics anyway), I have no idea who does it though.

I'm sure this Uptight label (Harrisburgh P.A.) is something to do with Bar-Clay (Traditions), the link being the publishing company (Ferber). whistling.gif

Spot on Tony.

Here's what Dennis wrote in reply to my question:

Hi Paul, there was never any confusion with the two groups. Thinking back some37 years the

world was a bigger place then and the two groups were 50-60 miles apart, they being in a town

named Reading or close to. We claimed Harrisburg because who would know where Middletown

was then (Three Mile Island)! I've been told they were either all white or mostly white. I'll check

with Mark about putting the photo's back on the site, I didn't even realize they were gone. Thanks.

This might be of some interest................

The link above takes you to the sleeve to a rview of a CD called "Eastern PA 60's Soul".

Here's a copy of the review:

Perhaps this would be more accurately titled Eastern Pa '60s Blue-Eyed Soul, as all of the music was made by White groups recording for engineer Clay Barclay in the Reading, PA region. Unlike most compilations of impossibly obscure 1960s recordings by regional White American bands, this is not garage rock, although there's an occasional garage flavor. It's soul music, heavily influenced by Motown, James Brown and early group harmony Philadelphia soul, although there's a degree of naivete missing from most soul records performed by African-Americans. It's much closer to the frat-rockish blue-eyed soul of groups like Bill Deal & the Rhondels ("May I") or the Casinos than it is to the Rascals. The covers are well-executed but unmemorable; better are the originals -- which are quite derivative but well done -- and occasionally good enough to sound like covers of obscure Black soul sides. The Catalinas, for instance, do a pretty classy Philly-styled ballad, "Laughing Through the Tears," as well as a respectable James Brown-styled instrumental, "Summer's Groove." James & the Incredible Showmen's "James Brown Boo-Ga-Loo" is another credible emulation of the JB's, while the same band's "To Love to Love" has good harmonies in the Four Seasons/Beach Boys style. The ten songs by the Motiques are all covers and pale next to their surroundings; howerver, they're all grouped together at the end of the disc so they're easily skipped.

So there's a link with the Catalinas on Pagoda too - top tune!
