Unknown Sixties & Seventies soul dancers are the life blood of the Northern Scene, but how do the DJ's keep turning them up ??????. We all know that its not easy these day's, but stuff still comes thru'..........but my problem is, where do they come from. If a record is on ebay for example unless there is a sound file, how do you know its any good !........if there is a soundfile then regardless of whether you win it or not, everyone then knows it from the sound file........with regard to just going on the credits, well most of us are aware of the 'names' to look for, so even if mislisted the hounds are onto it sharpish.

I would imagine the days of sifting thru piles of soul records for that unknown gem are long gone. I beleive that maybe the top collectors/DJ's have still got stuff that has never been aired in their vaults...........but for mere mortals how do you find unknown records ?????????..........also remembering most US record shops have been pillaged long ago........

Dont want anyone letting out their personal sources, but just interested as to how you find em these day's.

Well i sat in front of the P.C. yesterday and played thro 118 pages of suonds on a certain site and heard loads of good stuff--thats gone strait to my wants list.Great fun ,sat with a bottle of wine,in my pyjamas,being educated.

hello russ, Easy peasy, some people who have been going to the states for years have just built up contacts,they have people finding the stuff for em.....butch has his own warehouse with 17 trillion and 4 records in it all unknown. The legend was born in harlem and he has 56 brothers and sisters all who send him tunes. there thats it in a nutshell

Turn 'em over and listen to the B sides!!

Buy anything that looks like it's got potential Artists, Labels, Writers, Producers, Time and any other useful info on the label.

Then when you've got them play both sides and for every 500 country and western records you get, you may find a half decent

dancer. Funny how you seem to know in the first few bars though

lol! innit frustrating finding a pile of u.s sevens only to find when listening there nearly all c&w....walked into a secondhand shop once just after an american squaddie had unloaded a box of 500 sevens YES ! ....no.....almost all c&w,some rock n roll and a few soul which were all pretty f***** ! that was in norwich

then in bristol theres another secondhand shop with loads of u.s singles...great labels...all pre 63 or post 70 and even then more fillers...i suspect someone had already been through before the shop got them !

Any place that has had an American Military base should provide some tunes I would have thought? So it doesn't have to be just from the states?

Go through sales boxes of people you respect and whose taste you like. If they ask you to listen to something, try it on the vestax! Look through funk boxes, as people often mis-categorise funk, when its soul and they often have soulful b sides the same with a lot of doo wop tunes.

Go through thousands of soundbites on sites and listen hard! Spend hours with your 'soulful' mates, at someones house listening to tunes and having a laugh.

Yes Dean I regulary wade through the second hand shops, junk shops in Bristol and have to say not found a great deal for at least 5 or 6 years but did find lots in the 90s especially the early years. I think the problem today is everybody's a bloody record dealer with the advent of ebay. Last year I did manage to grab a copy of Betty Lavettes you made a believer out of me 50p great tune, these finds really still give you buzz dont they, will pop up to your night soon.

Your talking about needles in haystacks and every year the haystack is getting bigger.

Its more likely to go into the archives of records hardly played years ago and long forgotten, and find a tune that gets a second chance, and it takes off.

Dont forget in the late 60s and early to mid 70s so much stuff got found that lots of records missed the chance.

An example: Sterling Magee - Keep on - Sylvia. With todays love of 'early dancers' it would go down a storm and maybe only a handfull of folks would recognise it. The list goes on and on and many posts on this forum have argued for changing the top 500 to the top 5000 so underplayed tunes get a chance.
