Jerry Hipkiss Posted April 21, 2008 Posted April 21, 2008 Haven't seen him in decades - good sort, first met him when me and my girlfriend were walking along the seafront at Torquay, cassette player pumping out one of Steve Smiths tapes, so that would be summer '73, met him at The Cats, Wigan and all points North for some years after that.

Me neither Jerry, I was from Chadsmoor ,Cannock and used to give Ian lifts either to or from the clubs (in my 1956 Austin A50 - 8000 miles of trouble free motoring for 25 quid ! It would take 6 people 3 front 3 back Tony and Glenys were regulars plus assorted guys and girls unable recall everyone.....) I went everywhere; Cats, Torch , Mecca, Raven ,Vava , Casino ,Leeds nighter Top Rank Stoke Bali Hi Sunday night on way back home sometimes with Ian on board. Occasionally I would pick him up at Knutsford or Keele if he had thumbed a ride and been dropped of there - which was popular way of getting around then as you know. Left the scene in 75 and have great memories of that particular period in time.I can still see him in my minds eye with his Levi jacket, long black hair, birmingham bags or skinners and 'weathered' appearance , blockers bag in hand. I can remember "Kipper" at Cats from down your neck of woods ! ? Kind regards / Graham

Guest Super60sounds Posted April 21, 2008 Posted April 21, 2008 Last time i saw him was at the Central in cannock in the early 90's Hello Ted , I only went to one night there around that time as had young family , don't recall seeing him , who was doing that ? I grew up in area and used to go there for a shandy on way home from Youth centre, had a good jukebox ! Function room upstairs for wedding receptions etc It's an Indian retuarant nowadays. From memory....I think Ian liked the Mecca and went there regularly in preference to Casino when the scene split around although early days he was a regular at Casino..

Guest Posted April 27, 2008 Posted April 27, 2008 I wonder if Malc managed to find him through Kev Burden ? I found out after posting my reply about Ian last Sunday , that Kevin has had family / personal matters to deal with since the last time I talked to him , so I did not intrude by ringing that afternoon ........ I will be contacting Kevin this morning , when I hope he will be able to shed some light on Mr Popple ......... I have spoken in the week to someone who knew Ian very well , and I asked if he had any idea as to his whereabouts : He stated that the last he had heard of him , Ian was having health / mental issues , and had thrown a wobbler when it all got too much for him ........ Hopefully I can get an update when I speak with Kevin later this morning ........ Malc Burton
Guest Posted April 27, 2008 Posted April 27, 2008 Boys it's worth asking Jaynie from Worcester. She knew Ric Tic & Kipper Jones well. She lurks on here somewhere under the monica 'vegimite'. Her & Caroline were a big part of the scene back then, went up to the torch every weekend, 76 club, Va Va's etc.

Malc Burton I spoke with / to Kevin Burden this morning , and asked him if he knew the whereabouts of Ian Popple ....... Kevin informed me that the last time he saw Ian , was about 20 years ago , when Ian turned up at his house unexpectedly ....... He said that Ian was working at the time for the forestry commission , and has had no further contact with him after he left ....... He had heard since that time of seeing / talking to him - like I had also heard - that Ian had mental and health problems , but nothing else . Kevin told me that he will telephone his Mother and Father , and ask them about him ; when he has news on Ian , he will give me a call , and I will post this up .......... Malc Burton

Guest Posted May 11, 2008 Posted May 11, 2008 no pete i got busted on crewe station oif you remember. didnt want me dad to find out so left home + moved north....... Just a bit more information regarding Mr Popple ........ I did not include this in my posting regarding the time that Ian turned up unannounced at Kevin Burden's house , for fear of freaking people ....... As I stated , Ian told Kevin that he was working for The Forestry Commission , but what I did not include , was that Ian was in charge of the butterfly house on an estate which the Commission owned , and took a display case , containing pinned butterflies , with him to show Kevin ........ Kevin states that he has still not got over the visit .......... Malc Burton
