Guest Una Scot-Oz Posted April 27, 2008 Posted April 27, 2008 I know 'word of mouth' will work, obviously mate. But it'll take half an hour of thought to put together a half decent, deserving of today, flyer - as apposed to five minutes in WORD typing out a shite, unworthy of your efforts, sheet - surely? It's not hard to give your flyer a bit of thought, what's the problem. It just strikes me that if you appear to have a downer on well-thought out flyers, you can't have bothered yourself. Actually I know for a fact Baz has put a lot of time and effort in to the flyers. Now instead of changing them every month, they are just a different colour. As he was saying, it is a bit different over here as for a start you don't bump into old mates who happen to mention there is a soul night on. Many of us have moved over here during our "kids and family" years. And gotused to living without soul nights. - I was here for 20 years and didn't realise that there was a scene. There are lots of stories like that, and every now and then we find another lost soulie! So yes word of mouth is best, but the flyers are important for us too. I always pass the word on to any Poms who I come across, sometimes with sucess. I got back into the scene by going to check out a flyer I had seen, still believing that it couldn't be possible and there they all were dancing to "Queen of Fools" There were three of us within one month like that, here for 20 odd years. Anyway off the thread a bit here, but there must be more out there who don't know where there are nights on - so flyers are a must for us. And Baz certainly isn't on a downer, far from it! He runs one of the best NS nights in Oz thanks to his huge efforts.

I was looking through the flyers seciton , when I saw the one for an upcoming one in Australia ...... It states the venue , date, and of course , what the music policy is - but no DJ names ........ Is this possibly the way forward here ? Advertise what the music is , and let that music be the attraction on its' own - and creditable - merits ? .......... Writer of this reply / post dons tin hat , and waits for the flak ......... Malc Burton Edited April 27, 2008 by Malc Burton
Guest bazabod_downunder Posted April 27, 2008 Posted April 27, 2008 Malc, you hit the nail right on the head. KTF Baz I can just picture it ........ " In respect of your application , can I ask you what can you offer Australia , and did you ever go to The Casino ? " .......... Malc Burton
Guest Posted April 27, 2008 Posted April 27, 2008 Malc, you hit the nail right on the head. KTF Baz I knew it ......... " No , I have never been to The Casino , but I have been known to have a bet on the horses " ........... Malc Burton
Guest bazabod_downunder Posted April 27, 2008 Posted April 27, 2008 Hi Malc.....I was intrigued & had a look, this is in Collingwood, Melbourne, I can't understand why there aren't any DJ's listed, (I know who they are) this is not one of the better known soul nites in Melbourne, & this is not the norm, all venues here (apart from this one) do there utmost to promote their nites with guest interstate, also where possible Uk & overseas DJ's.....I understand that John Manship will be DJing in Perth at The Fly By Night event at some point & Ginger Taylor is confirmed for The 11th Australian National Northern Soul Weekender in Perth this november....although I guess this is a piffle poffle as you quite rightly have pointed out, 'let the the music be the attraction on it's own merits'. BTW just to give you a squizz at some of our previous flyers & the new 'bog standard' flyer so you can make your minds up whether I can't be arsed or not. KTF Baz Commendations and credit to you on the standard of your flyers , Baz : As I have previously stated , attractive packaging goes a long way to selling a product ....... Will John be able to use his rod and line whilst he out there ? ............ Malc Burton
macca Posted April 27, 2008 Posted April 27, 2008 I like to see well thought out, innovative promotional blurb. It all depends who you're trying to attract, doesn't it? I remember a mate of mine on here sending me a postcard in the early 2000's with a photo of Tommy Navarro on the front, advertising a Scenesville event, I think. The names on the DJ roster (do we still use that word?) were convincing enough and the word of mouth factor, i.e. my mate telling me I should do one of the these nights the next time I'm over would have clinched it. Someone mentioned the Spanish events. There are some beautiful examples of these in the flyer gallery. Barcelona, after London perhaps, is Europe's foremost advertsing & PR capital and home to some of the most successsful agencies in the world. It's hardly a surprise that some of that creativity presents itself in the promotion of international gatherings like Gijon's EuroYeYe & S.O.U.L. The Madrid Magic Soul Weekender/SMART Club have splendid flyers too. One of the DJs is a creative for the company that handles the Diageo (Guinness) account, so it must rub off. The Italians are also very good at it, in my opinion. You might call it a window on the ethos of the club in question. Fat sweaty blokes with beer towells and right on the torch badges is a 'political' statement, so is a picture of the Tommy Navarro and his ice-cream cone hairdo. I'm all for it.

Whatever the feeling / opinions on the design / content / appearance / look of a flyer or flyers . the main thing we must remember - and must not forget - that it is the music that counts in the end .......... macca Posted April 27, 2008 Posted April 27, 2008 (edited) Couldn't agree more Malc. In the case of the Spanish venues, the music is beyond reproach, so the classy approach to the promotion is an added bonus. They're passionate about the sounds, but also about the style & presentation of their events. I don't think that's a bad thing, myself. Edited April 27, 2008 by macca
Corbett80 Posted May 1, 2008 Posted May 1, 2008 (edited) Agree absolutely Macca......nothing wrong with presenting our heroes and heroines (and by that i mean the artists ) in a cool, smart and artistic way....their superb music is more than derserving of being promoted with well thought out design. And with Photoshop and today's access to similar tools anyone with an eye for art and passion about the music can have a go at making their own flyers, which in turn will hopefully create a wealth of soulful design which will become part and parcel of the the cool as f*** imagery of this scene imho. No one complains about the quality of the artwork on Kent CD's for example (which is very often a mix of excellent rare photos and great design)......in fact there was a recent exhibition of Kent artwork I think? Also, a lot of the old skool style flyers are little pieces of soulful art in themselves, the whole fanzine imagery and everything.....fantastic stuff only those who love soul music would appreciate properly.
