Was the awesome 'You Only Live Twice' by Lorraine Chandler actually put forward for consideration as the theme to the Bond film? I'm trying to get one up on a James Bond soundtrack bore at work who insists said track never had anything to do with the film - he's just jealous 'cos I've got it on vinyl and he ain't! Pathetic isn't it...

All I know is they wrote and recorded it for or about the film, whether it got to audition stage I'm not sure. What a sound though.

Jack Ashford told me that it WAS submitted to the Bond people and made it to the shortlist only to lose out in the end. He also said that they entered some kind of open competition to write a theme song for the film and that there was a condition that it should have that familiar refrain in it to make it recognisable.

Thanks. I note that on the YouTube dubbed version, the song is almost exactly the right length for the credit sequence, suggesting they had a pre-set recording time to adhere to as well.

This is an interesting thread.

I rang Eon Productions a couple of years ago to pitch a song I had written, which featured 007 styled lyrics, but a Detroit music bed. I had been invited to write some material for Edwin Starr, and I did this as a tongue in cheek play on words, with Agent Double O Soul, being an inspiration and both Edwin Starr and James Bond being older,but still in the business today. It is short of melody, but the lyrics reflect the music and covert nature of Bond. Sadly, Edwin Starr passed away, but when I rang Eon to say I had written the song and would they be interested, the receptionist burst out laughing and said no chance! I asked her whether that was the way they reacted to anybody ringing them and she showed typical prejudice against up and coming creativity. I decided to send the song to Tom Jones and wrote another verse (the last but one) with a view to him maybe doing a tribute to Edwin etc. They were not interested, but at least never laughed, but wrote me a letter.

Now I have completed my mission to Detroit recently, I may pursue it myself and record it where I just did my other stuff. And I know just the man who might do it for me! Here is the demo that Eon never even heard (so I never got anywehere near what Jack Ashford did):
