Supercorsa Posted April 11, 2008 Posted April 11, 2008 If these are the ones with narration between the tracks, I picked them up from a car boot sale a couple of years back. Unfortunately they were only in the white inner paper sleeves and didn't have any box or covers on them. Only paid a couple of quid for them.

Guest mel brat Posted April 11, 2008 Posted April 11, 2008 (edited) The UK issue is rarer and has a booklet with it.The UK was flooded with cheap imports via Canasa in the late 70s Quite right. The set was quite expensive when it first came out on Tamla Motown in 1971 or maybe early 1972? (I really ought to remember really, 'cos I bought one as a present for my then girlfriend's Birthday!) This turned out to be a genuinely "limited edition" and was soon sold out, whereupon a second UK edition was issued soon afterwards. Numerous copies of this set on the US Motown label were imported in the mid-seventies, but I haven't seen a UK label set in a long time, and I'm betting that they are pretty rare by now. The second set of this type was more comprehensive and had spoken intoductions by Smokey Robinson. It was pressed in 1980 (I think) - presumably to celebrate Motown's 20th anniversary - on white labels and was for radio DJ use only. This consisted of 6 albums in two sleeves, and also included DJ cue sheets and a couple of question sheets for an on-air 'Motown Quiz'. Sharon Davis reviewed it at the time in her Motown column for B&S. Not long afterwards, this set was issued commercially in the US and UK with added introductions by Lionel Ritchie I believe. Philippe Posted April 12, 2008 Posted April 12, 2008 The UK issue is rarer and has a booklet with it.The UK was flooded with cheap imports via Canasa in the late 70s I have a US copy, with a booklet and five different inner sleeves. There're some copies on ebay.
Our Kid Posted April 14, 2008 Posted April 14, 2008 Didn't one of these boxed sets (UK I think) have a special UK issue of Finders Keepers - The Marvelettes included? Paul
BrianB Posted April 14, 2008 Posted April 14, 2008 For me the only two would be-Barett Strong-money Smokey-shop around Hi Lou, You only like 2 on these LPs? Are you on the right forum?
Guest Rich Posted April 14, 2008 Posted April 14, 2008 Didn't one of these boxed sets (UK I think) have a special UK issue of Finders Keepers - The Marvelettes included? Paul Yep - with Kim Weston 'Do like I do' on the other side I believe. TMG1000???
LOU Posted April 14, 2008 Author Posted April 14, 2008 Hi Lou, You only like 2 on these LPs? Are you on the right forum? Hi Didn't say I disliked any of the other tracks just said I liked those two the best.
Guest mcleanmuir Posted April 17, 2008 Posted April 17, 2008 I have 2 copies of the US release, both still sealed. One box has got a rough leather look and the other is a bit smaller and has a smooth box. Both same serial number. Is one of them (smooth) a reissue?
Guest mel brat Posted April 17, 2008 Posted April 17, 2008 (edited) Didn't one of these boxed sets (UK I think) have a special UK issue of Finders Keepers - The Marvelettes included? Paul I think that was a set of re-issued singles issued in 1980. The Kim Weston/Marvelettes was a bonus single, available only if you bought the whole set as far as I remember! (I think also that the numbering system was used to fill previous gaps in the UK TMG catalogue or something...) Edited April 17, 2008 by mel brat
Sean Hampsey Posted April 17, 2008 Posted April 17, 2008 I think that was a set of re-issued singles issued in 1980. (I think also that the numbering system was used to fill previous gaps in the UK TMG catalogue or something...) Correct Mel. I bought the box 45 set. The bonus 45 "Do Like I Do" was indeed TMG 1000. Sean
Sean Hampsey Posted April 18, 2008 Posted April 18, 2008 Hi -hope someone can help with a price of a boxed set of the mowtown story-Limited Edition- contains five LP's(The First Decade) Mint conditionidated 1970 Hope this makes sence to someone as I am curious to the value. Thank You This is really an iconic work. Certainly for me it is. The soundtrack to my early teens. The set was broadcast on BBC radio in 1970/71 over 5 weekends and I taped 'em all, religiously, on Reel To Reel, prior to obtaining a vinyl set. Course this was in the days when 'rarity' meant very little. Quality was all that really mattered. And decent Soul Music was scarce on any format. Rarely will you find such earth shatteringly brilliant music all in one place. Probably nowhere more than in this one boxed set. And the presentation alone blew us all away at the time. That Voice! "This Is The Motown Sound" over the strains of "Reach Out I'll Be There" Wow! Wouldn't swap my set for a golden chopper! Sean

Sean As yoy will remember , Sean , this was adapted / adopted by Bill Payne , to great effect , when introducing Motown records in his DJ sets in the late 70s / early 80s ........ Guest nusha Posted April 18, 2008 Posted April 18, 2008 I have a US copy, with a booklet and five different inner sleeves. There're some copies on ebay. Maybe the USA did a limited edition with a booklet.I remember a glut of imports from Canada.Retailing for less than the wholesale price of the uk one several years earlier. These were just plain sleeves in a Box
Guest nusha Posted April 18, 2008 Posted April 18, 2008 Correct Mel. I bought the box 45 set. The bonus 45 "Do Like I Do" was indeed TMG 1000. Sean There was also a metal Commemorative badge with the set.Crimson Colour..Really nice
Pete S Posted April 18, 2008 Posted April 18, 2008 I've got a UK black label Tamla Motown set - complete with the superb book it came with, all records in their proper inner sleeves - box is tatty though. If anyone wants it I'd be happy to sell it! Never been played in over 25 years.
Guest Rich Posted April 18, 2008 Posted April 18, 2008 Correct Mel. I bought the box 45 set. The bonus 45 "Do Like I Do" was indeed TMG 1000. Sean They must have put TMG1000 in some of the Boxed LP sets as well Sean, 'cos that's where our youth got his. You're right about it being an iconic work - we more or less wore it out when we were kids (even our Mam used to play it!!)
