What records do you rarely if ever heard palyed out that you would love to dance to either again or for the first time?

It may be an underplayed neglected oldie, an overlooked gem, or even God forbid an unreleased track that has only been issued on a CD or compilation. (the only time CDs should be played IMO is if the tune was only released on the CD or compilation as wasnt released back in the 6ts/7ts).

Perhaps you want to hear a little more 7ts or Crossover in a main room. What records are due a reactivation or simply need exposure for the first time?

Here's a few I haven't heard out in a long time and a few Ive never heard out. I would like a chance to dance to these again or for the first time. Please DJ'S get out some of those gems you havent played in years or just because a record is cheap and available dont overlook it. So many sounds never get played these days.

SKULLSNAPS- MY HANG UP IS YOU

CREATIONS- A DREAM

JUDY CLAY- UPSET MY HEART (GOT ME SO UPSET) only ever issued on a Kent lp as far as Im aware. Superb!

ARTISTICS- GIRL I NEED YOU

CHAUMONTS- WHEN YOU LOVE SOMEONE

JACKIE WILSON- YOU LEFT THE FIRE BURNING

BILLY HAWKES- OOH BABY I BELIEVE IM LOSING YOU

HESITATIONS- IM NOT BUILT THAT WAY

BOBBY DUKES- JUST TO BE WITH YOU

WILLIAM BELL- THE MAN IN THE STREET

JON LUCIEN- WOULD YOU BELIEVE IN ME

MONTCLAIRS- UNWANTED LOVE

LITTLE SHERMAN AND HIS MOD SWINGERS- THE PRICE OF LOVE

THE IMPRESSIONS- I NEED YOU

METROS- WE STILL HAVE TIME

MITTY COLLIER- GET OUT

CLAY HUNT- SINCE I'VE LOST YOU

BRENDA LEE EAGER- WHEN IM WITH YOU

JEAN TERRELL- NO LIMIT

BRENDA GEORGE- I CANT STAND IT I CANT TAKE NO MORE

DAVE CHARLES- AINT GONNA CRY NO MORE

MARJOREE BLACK- ONE MORE HURT

BILLY SHA RAE- IM GONE (IMO BETTER THAN EDDIE PARKER'S VERSION)

EDDIE DAYE- LEAN ON ME

OTIS LEAVILL- WHY WHY WHY?

DON RAY- BORN A LOSER (ONE OF MY ALL TIME FAVES)

JJ BARNES- SAY IT (VERY CHEAP RECORD BUT AMAZING)

JJ BARNES- CHAINS OF LOVE (ANOTHER GEM FROM THIS DETROIT MASTER)

SHADES OF JADE- IT WAS WRONG

and many many more.

Exactly so many oldies and overlooked gems that dont get taken out and played. Perhaps many of the djs just played them to death in their day but many folk still want to hear them.

Thats what I like about the 100 club you get a nice smattering of oldies you havent heard for a while, some ultra rare stuff and some overlooked gems as well and a wee bit of 7ts/crossover as well.

Hesitations is an all time favourite for me also.

I think this is a REGIONAL thing, depending on what DJs you get to hear.

On the lists above Micky Moonshine is played at nearly every Northern night we've been to in the Yorkshire/ Notts area as are several of the others.

i also heard The Adlibs a couple of weeks ago

But the likes of Sam Nesbitt I probably haven't heard "out" for over 20 years, but you can bet your life that someone is playing these sounds on a regular basis in the N.West or London.

Just a thought !

Totally agree with this, looking at some of them thinking 'what do you mean you never hear that?' I bet you could find the majority of them on at least one playlist on here, but of course if people don't or can't travel the variety of what they hear will be restricted (this isn't a criticism of anyone, just a fact!)

I've only heard Sam Nesbitt out a couple of times - Prestwich I think a few years ago, can't remember who played it though!

Bob & Gene Sailboat ohh suit you sir one to canter to sir is it!

This thread is makin life easier for those dj's who get a bit complacent.... and its the tip of a vinyl iceberg ....support the venues that have this attitude of playing different stuff you know it makes sense.

Quick info about this - as you all probably know this was going to be the first record to be put out on Dave odins 444 label. Swapped my original copy to Martin Koppel around '73 for a Bob Relf ( at the time Bob was worth £30 and Sam a fiver) HOW times change!

I find that playing "forgotten" oldies doesnt seem to go down that well...probably due to the fact that a majority of punters at soul nights (well the ones i tend to go to) these days never actually went to any serious northern venues in the old days!

They seem to be more of a "Johnny come lately" crowd who want to hear todays current spins...mainly 70s "easy to get to know ya" type tunes...

While we are on the thread, some of my fave forgotten oldies I`d love to play....

The Ethics-Look at me now

Donald Lee Richardson- Palm of your hand

Volcanos-Storm warning

Jodi Mathis-Dont you care anymore

Does anyone play any of these?

Only Love Can Save Me Now - Al Jones

Keep On - Sterling McGee

I Gotta Find Me Somebody - The Velvets

Let's Have A Love-In - Wingate Love-In Strings

The Gallop - Milton Wright

It Ain't Easy - Charles Russell

Trying To Find My Woman - Lou Courtney

Marble & Iron - Carl Douglas

Gotta Tell Somebody - Tony Talent

Being Without You - Maurice Williams

I Need Your Love So Deperately - Peaches & Herb

Temptation's Calling My Name - Lee David

Standing In The Darkness - The Ethics

California Montage - Young Holt Unlimited

Is It All Gone - The Magicians

Do It To It - The Funky Sisters

One thing I've noticed is that tempos have massively decreased. No one seems to like the real stompers any more. Is it that as the crowds have got older, then the tempo has decreased in order to accomodate the crowd (and aging legs)? Could anyone play The Velvets these days I wonder................?

Your talking about our cheapie 45s in the little black boxes that we keep behind the sofa?

In the 80s, some DJs made massive tunes out of cheap available 45s that we all bought and have in our boxes - but no one would ever play them nowdays !

Here is a good example. I got mine at the Queens Hall in Bradford in 1988 for 5 quid.........and its still worth 5 quid!

Bloody great mermories! Would I like to hear it played today? ............. Would you? :) Yeah ! Just once ore twice !

Yup some damn good tunes in there!

DJ's ???? Daft upstarts who seem to have forgotten what there job is! Heard some gems occasionally but much much too infrequently.Goin' back that's what made you travel the country specifically to hear different sounds. If I got a penny for the phrase "I haven't got it with me" i'd be biddin' for Robbie Lawson right now.

Frankly DJ's you don't give a f**k for the audience which is exemplified by the a**hole routine I permanently come across whereby you feel punters who come up and ask for a tune are f***ing nuisances.

So you were obliged the privelege of a written list (presumably to give you more creative time!!)

which you deign to pick and choose which suits you with no reference to the punter.

Wouldn't take much to say " I see somebody's lookin' for such n such - ain't got it but this is the closest i can get.

Which would:-

A Show a degree of knowledge/understanding of the scene

B Indicate that there is an audience there!

If you wanna satisfy yourself do it at home - don't charge people for the privelege!!

Def agree with the regional thing. We go oop north & down sarf (beauty of living in the middle!) & hear records in some places that never get spinned in others but thats why we go to these different places isn't it?

DJs being called 'daft upstarts'? Really?! I know, these kids like Dave Rimmer have got a trick or two to learn, not to mention Ady Croasdell, Johnny Weston, Woody, Keith Money, Mick H....i'm sure they'll get there in time! :P:)

Some top tunes listed there, can't remember ever hearing The Presicions-Such misery being played though to be fair i have trouble remembering what was played on Saturday night!

Would love to hear ANY Hesitations records played a bit more! thumbsup.gif

Def agree with the regional thing. We go oop north & down sarf (beauty of living in the middle!) & hear records in some places that never get spinned in others but thats why we go to these different places isn't it?

DJs being called 'daft upstarts'? Really?! I know, these kids like Dave Rimmer have got a trick or two to learn, not to mention Ady Croasdale, Johnny Weston, Woody, Keith Money, Mick H....i'm sure they'll get there in time! :P:)

Time marches on - we might be dead!

Acknowledge your drift.

Saw an ace mix of people/ages at a do recently and the thought crossed my mind - these poor buggers are more likely to get run over than ever hear DLR Palm of your hand what a bl**dy shame!

Oh, and then someone played Roscoe Shelton an' everything was alright!!

Would you? thumbup.gif Yeah ! Just once ore twice !

Chris

Nice one there Chris, imagine 3 ina row with Alice clark ---you hit me and Lee david---Temptations calling my name. rolleyes.gif:thumbup:

Mention of Chuck Jackson in previous posting 'chains of love . Another excellent outing by him was

' I've got to be strong' . Not heard that for a while. Would sound great out now IMO :) (probably does but I aint bin where it is played  ).

I drop a few forgotten or under played tracks in my sets when i'm out djing from the likes of Johnny Nash's MGM stuff, Magic Night, Little Sherman, Maurice McCalister and some rarely heard Jackie Wilson stuff among others and always get a good response from the dancefloor and a few queries on what tracks are.

I Gotta Find Me Somebody - The Velvets

Let's Have A Love-In - Wingate Love-In Strings

The Gallop - Milton Wright

It Ain't Easy - Charles Russell

Trying To Find My Woman - Lou Courtney

Marble & Iron - Carl Douglas

Gotta Tell Somebody - Tony Talent

I Need Your Love So Deperately - Peaches & Herb

One thing I've noticed is that tempos have massively decreased. No one seems to like the real stompers any more. Is it that as the crowds have got older, then the tempo has decreased in order to accomodate the crowd (and aging legs)? Could anyone play The Velvets these days I wonder................?

Ian D

Play 'The gallop' from time to time, always loved it.

The Al Jones on Amy is really nice. Takes a little time to get going, but once it does..... Played it a few times at a local bar they let me play some tunes in once a month & goes down well, especially when the crowd has had a few!

I think you'll find that this is a UK phenomenon Ian. The US and Continental European fans still like like it loud and fast Mate. Thank God.
