45cellar Posted April 4, 2008 Posted April 4, 2008 Chubby Checker - Do the Freddie (1965) Just found this on YouTube Got me to wondering what might have been had Chubby Checker, not got the tag of the Dance Craze (Various) Certainly brought our music to the masses, albeit mostly buried on the "B Side" as is the case with this one. Hidden classics, such as "AT THE DISCOTHEQUE" could have been the "A Side" had things been different. Realistically in the cold light of day, the dance craze brought the hits & the cash and the World Audience. Cameo Parkway then went on to record many of our most prized tracks. However, had Chubby Checker released the better side at the time ?
Sean Hampsey Posted April 4, 2008 Posted April 4, 2008 Yes, the "Freddie" was based on that weird dance that Freddie Garrity (of Freddie & The Dreamers) used to do, Roger. But we all did it when we were kids... didn't we! "You Were Made For Me.............! Sean

Incredible that Chubby Checker had release on release and almost all a New Dance Craze. I just wondered, what if they had been normal releases. Would music have changed so dramatically before Motown or The Beatles. Very different times back then, Civil Rights etc. -- Chubby Checkers Dance Craze discs did have a World Wide appeal, the records crossed to the mainstream almost by stealth & won a white audience. If only as a kid I had realised what an Impact these quirky tunes would have on my life today. "> Edited April 5, 2008 by 45cellar
Pete S Posted April 5, 2008 Posted April 5, 2008 It could well have been a double A side because I've got film of him doing At The Discotheque on US tv (did post it on youtube, taken down, might be up again by now)

It did make me wonder, but it remained the "B Side" on the record, wonder if Parkway did re-promote the "At The Discotheque" side, hence the Video from HOLLYWOOD A GO GO Thankfully he did gain a certain amount of Credibility in the Later years, unfortuately most remember him purely for the Various (Dance Craze) records & he was more than that. I couldn't find the Video of "At The Discotheque" on YouTube, however I did find this, and in the write up at the side of the Video there is this. "He did popularize many dance songs. Checker later lamented: ...in a way, "The Twist" really ruined my life. I was on my way to becoming a big nightclub performer, and "The Twist" just wiped it out. It got so out of proportion. No one ever believes I have talent" Edited April 5, 2008 by 45cellar
