There was a similar musicor demo finishing around the same time, Marie Knight. I know, I know, this topic has more than done the rounds, but for some reason I found this getting to me tonight. I don't think sellers can get morally let off so easily.

On a scene built around rarity selling blatant forgeries has to be questionable at best.

Both items had the same buyer. I don't get it - why fool yourself?

I rarely don't like these and wish buyers wouldn't. In saying that I have to acknowledge that I purchased many a bootleg pressing in the 70s. Perhaps my concern is linked to technology making duplication easier, and the world market for records will see someone getting ripped of with these along the line. In producing them you must know the potential for abuse. Perhaps I'm just feeling grumpy tonight.

i agree Dean, even though the seller clearly states they aint originals and everything it still dont make it morally right but there is always someone out there willing to cough up to like you say, fool themself, obviously a dj ? buying them to look good incase anyone checks the record out when its playing yes.gif

you can buy the boot for a tenner so £36 for the labels is real laughable rolleyes.gif

It's a free world i guess & the seller stated clearly what it was so more fool the buyer i say ! Why didn't he just buy an Eric copy for 50p & do it himself if he was that desperate !

I've got a similar one in my collection, a lovely copy of a pink demo Johnny Caswell, easy to spot really cause it's not moulded into the vinyl, difference is it cost less than the boot copies anyhow ! Sound quality is pretty good too, not like the Bernie Williams one !

Just re read your post Dean, & i think you are right about the technology & someone getting ripped off though thumbsup.gif Don't know what we can do though ? Report them as counterfeit to Ebay ? But as we said, i suppose it dosen't break their rules.

Common sense should tell me not to get involved, I'm nobody to be policing any scene. I'm an anorak geek for labels, John Manship's full colour book and the much referred to Kev Roberts book are like porn to me, I dwell over them knowing I can't have most of them. I revell in the ones I have and look through my records sometimes just for the sake of looking at them. I'm also taken with many categories of art. I'm never going to own some of the paintings I admire. If I buy a print of a painting for my own pleasure then so be it. If I put that print in a frame that is like the original, I think I'm starting to tread a difficult path. If I sell that picture and frame on ebay - putting it out into the world, am I in part responsible for the third or fourth buyer along a chain being fooled into buying something they believe is genuine and isn't? In part I agree with the buyer beware philosophy but the facilities for forgery are more accessible these days. I feel a bit precious about the rare soul scene, it's been part of me longer than most things in my life. Some records are simply great works of music, some are even greater because they are so hard to acquire. I would prefer that those who care do what we can to celebrate and enjoy rare soul music, that may have been lost if not for this scene, and frown upon anything that cheapens it. I don't want to listen to a DJ playing boots under any disguise, I would prefer to think that the scene is important to that DJ, and part of that scene is rarity and the dedication of seeking out that rarity. But like I said, who am I.......

Ebay should be removing his ID etc

I put abid on a VHS camera only to get amessage from another ebayer to tell me these were fakes. The seller was reported and the listing ended.

Why hasnt this happened with this guy - Cos Ebay make alot of money from it

When have boots become re-issues............just out of order.

at least hes not trying to kid anybody...clearly states not an original.! and NO i dont know who it is...but its no different morally to buying copied cds/dvd/ etc

No he say re-issue what adds some sort of legitimacy, they`re boots so shouldnt be for sale.

There's one born every minute....the really sad thing is that the guy's probably looking forward to DJing with it

Exactly the reason i started this thread, it may look good in your playbox but its in there for a reason and thats to fool who, not himself he/she knows its a wrongun, its to fool the soul police when they walk up and say, what the fook is this it sounds shite, and he/she rplies, look its an original you can tell by the label

It's how you beat eBay's text scanning software, it looks for "boot" and "bootleg" not for "re-issue". The text scanning software kicks in after a bid is placed, I had some listings pulled a while ago cos I said I accepted cash  which is now viewed by eBay as money laundering  only got pulled after someone bid on it.

The buyer probably is going to DJ with it, and this is one of the reasons lesser known sounds seem to be in vogue these days as that prevents the playing of looky-likeys. With so many poor sound systems and the pressure to play big money tunes I'm sure there are a few of these get played every week up & down the country. Kudos through deception - very sad.

The seller is making bloody good money on these too, so good that this scam is fairly high on my list of things to do once I've finished refurbing the house.

It's called an opinion Dean & don't worry about expressing it, that's what forums are about mate

I'm the same with labels , I've got thousands on my pc  for no other reason than i like looking at them.

I also collect what i can on original vinyl where i can & still feel that thrill when they arrive through the door, but that's where the dedication or whatever it is ends for me.

To me, at the end of the day it is the music that is the main focus & that's what i'm really after, these records aren't rare because the artist wanted them to be, he/she wanted them to be heard & to make it as a singer in the charts.

We can't do a lot about getting most of them their dues now, as we have discussed many times on here, but i bet if you could ask them whether they would prefer their song to be heard by loads of people on any format or just to a handful on original vinyl, i think i could take a good guess at the answer.

And also, having all these rare records isn't always an indication of dedication & love of the music, in a lot of cases it could just be the result of being 'considerably richer than thou', & often at the expense of procreation ! :D

When have boots become re-issues............just out of order.

Anyone disagree !! :D

Dept of trading standards? they might like to know.

 Yeah, but in this case it is still technically a reissue isn't it ?? I thought all the Eric's were legit ? & so technically all this bloke has done is stick a pretty picture on a legit record & put his handy work up for auction, which he as stated very clearly.

But they would have centre`s,and bumbs round the edge and dont come in three`s...they are brand new carver type jobs, when i see one of em on orange vinyl or something i might go with that....but untill,no chance!!,do look at his other kosher stuff..........cant believe folks are trying to defend him/her.

To be honest Ken, i never had a real good look i presumed that it was just someone chancing their arm using their old reissues. Different ball game if they are pressing up the records in quantity

Try to make this my last post as on this thread as I'm going off topic - just thought it worth a response. This point has often gone around my head as much as it has on other threads on here. I'm in favour of CDs, re-issues and first issues (the KENT series is great), MP3s (unless taken by deceipt), compilations, old nighter tapes and more. I would love some of the artists to get their dues. The only reason I see live acts is to show appreciation for the pleasure their discs have bought, not for some night-club style medley (had a brill chat with Cunnie at Prestatyn about that). What I despise is the faking for greed. Some faking is even funny, I can well remeber a certain Salvadors White demo! We can't give an artist a career in retrospect. I think that by the nature of being rare in a rare soul scene these records enjoy a listened lifespan beyond any prior expectation. Would the artist want the disc that gave them latter day glory (known or unknown) copied to the extent it's rarity was undermined. We can't do anything about proper respect back in day when the track was laid, we can try to do something now about respect for records place in a scene. It may be a drip-drip effect but boots, particularly acurate boots, more than most things contribute to diminishing what we like about this scene.

Don't dj with them. Happy to express my opinion (again), Dean

He's bought an Arin Demain for £1 - EBay item number 140202544337 , print out the label, stick it on and away you go. Anyone asked him what's on the B side of Arin ?

Jackie Edwards, Earnest Moseley, they could be the next ones he prints out and sticks on according to what he's bought. cool.gif

Anyone got a job lot of Paul Smith, Hugo Boss or D&G buttons I can sew on some cheapo Matalan shirts so I can flog them on EBay ?

I doubt very much you would find one artist happy with this practise, "just to be heard". I think you will find them far happier at things like this being reissued on CD and being paid for it, which stuff like this I think impacts.

Its a bootleg for a fake collector, what more can you say!
