Guest Fatius Bumius
Connie Francis - Fallin', it's being used in an advert, saw it on telly recent, forgot the product, remembered the tune...doh. There's a bloke version as well, Andy Williams ?? can't remember but some well known crooner did it. I'm like Linda, strange (to some) taste in Corny-Pop, I bat from the same side, big production belting voices, yum yum. Popcorn I don't like, Monster Popcorn, (like creaking doors and spooky coffin lids lifting, yep, got two CDs full of stuff a bit like Monster Mash, and chinese popcorn, bit like a load of kids banging about on xylophones I could listen to popcorn stuff all day, Little Joe Cook version of I'll Never Go To A Party Again etc. When I've gone in search of the 45 I've heard from some popcorn CD's, bought it, it plays faster on 45. Belgiums are buggers for slowing songs down to fit the popcorn scene. I've got a cd somewhere with a slowed down version of Ernie Washington - Lonesome Shack on, and it lasts 20 seconds longer, Freddie Houston, Soft Walkin - also slowed down, came across quite a few! Not bad though I bought a Faye Adams - Hammer, when it came it played a lot faster than on a popcorn CD i'd got! DOH. Be nice to see a few oddball popcorn tracks on the CD though, apart from what's already known to Northern Soul ears. Might be a way forward, push the boundaries a bit. Might even get Bazza into popcorn before he puts it into Room 101, some Ska played on the popcorn scene. I'll add, Jordan Porter - Nobody's Boy (Hanna Barbera) ^^Probably equivalent cheesy boring-ness to a popcorn fan as Frank Wilson is to a northern soulie ??? Guest NASHEE
They always sound better on these: Now that is nice !!! I have the Wendy Hill version too...but I do love Ross best....whoever he turned out to be ...although I'm not sure we should be discussing the early works of the man who became 'David Seville' of 'The Chipmunks' fame in a sub-forum called "All About The Soul". Still I suppose he's no worse than other Popcorn legends like Perry Como, Eddie Fisher, Anne Shelton and Tommy Dorsey... Link to comment Social source share

Guest
OK as we know SSers have the best taste going. Let's have your suggestions for an out & out Popcorn CD but black music, predominantly soulful and ideally from labels we have contacts with. Though don't worry if you're not sure; that's really my job. So far for starters we have had volunteered: Mack Vance Down By The Waterhole ?? Love is a nightmare - Johnny Darrow (sue) Your heart wasn't in it - Chuck Collins (dot) Nothing without your love - Johnny Barnes (Jaba) Pretty little girl - George Smith (laurie) Oh what a feeling - Jimmy Ricks Festival? The tingle - Jackie Weaver ?? And obviously nothing from the 3 New Breed CDs we've already put out, though odd tracks from other Kent or Ace CDs would be OK if it's presenting them in this context and particularly if they've been out for some time already. Thanks in advance Ady Link to comment Social source share

Guest vinylvixen
Ady, Jo's right you should just use Alan H as a consultant for the CD, he'd easily have enough knowledge/tunes to fill about 10 of em. Blimey - we agree on something - at last..... My USB turntable isn't connected to my PC But is your hip bone connected to your thigh bone One suggestion - and I'm not sure if you'd call it popcorn - Mel Carter 'Do I Love You' on Imperial....I await to be stood corrected.... None of that "I Love You" nonsense but songs about cigars, typewriters and cash registers. If we can only find some about pies and ale it should be massive in Yorkshire. Seriously thanks for the huge number of suggestions and advice, I'll certainly try and co-opt a couple of the leading collectors into the organising committee and it won't be peanuts I'm paying them with (It'll be popcorn!). Got his cd through, played it, and i thought it was pretty crap, there were 4 tracks i really liked, but they sounded very soulful r&b, the rest sounded like gene pitney (pop). When he played mine, he said it sounded a bit to soulful you just cant win. I think the soul and rnb scene collectors pic the better tunes from the popcorn scene that they know will fit around the sixties music what is being played in our clubs now. Maybe we should change the the name of the below coined names for the music we like, and take out a letter out each one to make a new name for our scene Rnb Club Soul Soul Northern Soul Popcorn Newbread Rnb I have said this before we take the best out of all the music from the era that fits in. Another great popcorn one by her is 'Come On jerry' The popular popcorn version of 'I've got a feeling Im falling' is by Jesse Pearson. IMO the ultimate record that is popcorn tempo but definitely soul is Johnny Barnes - 'Nothing without your love' on Jato. I'll list some more suggestions when i get a minute. Personally I love Ash's taste in music. He does some great CDs, I bought 4 CDs totally blind and adore every one - visit his website at https://rarerockinrecords.com. They also do a superb fortnightly show "Bring Back Yesterday". It's syndicated on destinationdoowop.com but can also be downloaded from his site at https://rarerockinrecords.com/raresounds.asp. The music is a wonderful mix of teen, doowop, girl sound, soul, real "boppin' oldies". After most of the BBY shows I end up buying at least a couple of the tracks played. Love the stuff, can't get enough. Each to their own, eh?;-) Alan Link to comment Social source share
