macca Posted March 30, 2008 Posted March 30, 2008 Baby Sugar I love You - Prince Ella & Sydney Jones on Prince. Sam used hammer this back in 76 & it used to drive me crazy. Played it off the NS Story Vol 8 the other night & thought bugger me, it's not that bad. A real tub thumper. Has this record remained rare?
Guest Posted April 2, 2008 Posted April 2, 2008 I don't care for any version of the old Peggy Lee "standard" FEVER (Little Willie John) - whether it's her version, Jazz-Funk (Ronnie Laws), Latin (La Lupe), Reggae (Keith 'Junior' Byles or Susan Cadogan) or indeed, LWJ's original Thats just f**ked up. How can you not like LWJ's original?

Guest andyrattigan Posted April 4, 2008 Posted April 4, 2008 Ketty Lester- Some things are better left unsaid (Or as I used to call it SOME THINGS ARE BETTER LEFT UNPLAYED) and I know its sacrilege to say this but I hate DOUG BANKS- I JUST KEPT ON DANCING. I liked it for years and then one day I heard it and I just hated it and have ever since. His voice really annoys me and for some reason it has a country kind of feel to it.Not my bag. another overated pile of pants is ARIN DEMAIN- SILENT TREATMENT Each to their own!
Ceejay Posted April 4, 2008 Posted April 4, 2008 EASY ONE FOR ME THIS!! WITHOUT DOUBT, UNQUESTIONABLY, ABSOLUTELY F--KIN' SHITE HOUSE FOR SALE!!!!! SECOND PET HATE 'NO ONE THERE' BY MARTHA REEVES. THE TUNE IS BAD ENOUGH, BUT WHY PEOPLE INSIST ON GETTING IN A CIRCLE AND SWAYING THEIR HANDS UP IN THE AIR LIKE THEY WERE AT A WEDDING DO IS EMBARRASSING (if you've been to Soul In The Sun, you'll know what I mean)!!!!

The Flasher by Mistura ft Lloyd Michaels. When I first heard it I almost throw my iPod away. WTF is this thing and how did it ever got played on the northern scene??? Then I listened to it over and over again. I love it now. Actually, when I always play it to people who doesn't know anything about northern soul and they love it to. If I ever make a movie, that's definitely gonna be in the soundtrack Bloody i-pod?? If we'd have thrown our recording machines away, we'd have killed someone, them personal tape recorders were bigger than house bricks!!!! Youth today, you don't know your born!! Agree with Joe, most are just over exposed & so sound tired, hide 'em away in a darked room for a couple of years & they'll sound fresh again, unless it's R&B then just leave 'em hidden away in a darkened room, fullstop. Take care,be safe & don't go downstairs at Middleton, It's EVIL, Spot.

Reg Posted April 4, 2008 Posted April 4, 2008 (edited) Patience Valentine..If you don't come or whatever it's called...brrrrrrrrr And that will never grow on me! I didn't used to like Barbara Mason that much.....I know!!! And now I've come to realise that it's probably one of the best records I'll ever hear. I don't know why I didn't take to it originally, I think I thought it was a bit tinny and one dimensional. And then one day I heard it out at a venue and it sounded like Northern Soul really should - lots of stops and starts, a great vocal and a fantastic melody. Great stuff :D Edited April 4, 2008 by reg
Simsy Posted April 4, 2008 Posted April 4, 2008 I didn't like Roger Hatcher - Sweetest Girl in The World. Couldn't understand why mates had paid thirty five quid for it, which was the going rate at the time. Thought it to be repetative twee crap. However over the years I mellowed on it and found a soulfulness that I hadn't appreciated before. L Allen - Can't We Talk It Over. This took a few years to grow on me - "tell me tell me tell me" Oh give over!

WHEN I DO GO TO MIDDLETON I ALWAYS SPEND MOST OF MY NIGHT DOWNSTAIRS. GO DOWN THERE WHEN SOUL SAM COMES ON AND IT'S ALWAYS TOO GOOD TO LEAVE!!!
Chris L Posted April 4, 2008 Posted April 4, 2008 The thread that Joan initiated about playing records you don't like had a few titles dotted around but how about you didn't like either at first hearing or even for ages but then you had a change of heart perhaps. To kick it off: Tear Stained Face - Don Varner Didn't like this from the day I first heard it (think it was the Casino) until many years later when Mark Bicknell played the original at home on his hi-fi and I heard the 'farting' background horns for probably the first time. It was clean and undistorted and sounded fabulous and I absolutely love it now. Mick Troy Doods - Try my love. Didn't get it, don't get it, will never get it, break or burn every copy. Chris L
Guest Posted April 11, 2008 Posted April 11, 2008 THANKFULLY NOT HEARD FOR YEARS BUT IN MY WIGAN DAYS I DETESTED GREEN DOOR CURRENTLY I WOULD SAY IN ORBIT THAT BABY VOICE MAKES ME WANNA THROW

Guest ScooterNik Posted April 11, 2008 Posted April 11, 2008 I don't care for any version of the old Peggy Lee "standard" FEVER (Little Willie John) - whether it's her version, Jazz-Funk (Ronnie Laws), Latin (La Lupe), Reggae (Keith 'Junior' Byles or Susan Cadogan) or indeed, LWJ's original I don't know why. On the Northern side, the first tune that springs to mind which has me reaching for the switch is Don Thomas's COME ON TRAIN I can only assume you've not heard the Chicago Cubs version 'Pennant Fever' on Chess (IIRC, can't be bothered going looking, may be Cadet?). Stay well clear.
Guest Ollie Lailey Posted April 12, 2008 Posted April 12, 2008 still cant satnd jackie day naughty boy- so f-ing boring. Facinations - girls are out to get you, always thought this was utter turd, herd it on a decent sound system, completly different record! with regard to the four vandalls, i was not around on the scene when ther was some sort of issue with this record being an undiscoverd record from the 6ts........dont want to piss on anyones chips, but how did anyone think that this record was actualy any good, and an original......it sounds terrible, so obvious modern recording techniques were used....dont get it AT ALL??? heartache souvenirs?? my good, this is one of the best records ever.........

John Reed Posted May 7, 2009 Posted May 7, 2009 Prince George - Wrong Crowd Didn't like it when I first heard it and still think it's utter dross.
Mark S Posted May 7, 2009 Posted May 7, 2009 Used to detest most beat ballads they reminded me of dodgy club singers in ropey tuxedo,s and frilly shirts , now older and wiser I love them .
Professorturnups Posted May 7, 2009 Posted May 7, 2009 (edited) Holly St James - "That's not Soul" Mark C Whoops - put it in twice. But should be Holly S(hi)t James. Guess this is what you would call "Northern" cos it's a dancer, clapper etc - and plenty more where that came from!! Edited May 7, 2009 by professorturnups
Guest Posted May 9, 2009 Posted May 9, 2009 Rosemary (What Happend) - Richard (Popcorn) Wylie the epitome of absolute cack look up the word 'cack' in the dictionary and you will find 'Rosemary (What Happend) - Richard (Popcorn) Wylie' as an example now I will probably have some idiot tell me that I am 'probably on the wrong site' & that I don't like soul music

It's a lovely track, so I won't get upset over what I paid for it
Guest Dani Herranz Posted May 10, 2009 Posted May 10, 2009 Jock Mitchell´s "Not a chance in a Million" on Impact I used to hate this when I first heard from a tape, it dindn´t sound Soul to me, until I first heard it in played at the 100 club and was absolutely trapped by it, I love it since....this would bring another good topic: records that sound awful at home or car, in a CD or MP3 player, but are brilliant in the right place: allnighter/soul night, with a good sound system and high volume...
Theresa Posted May 10, 2009 Posted May 10, 2009 When I first heard Prophecy's 'Rain In My Life' I thought it was awful - the gasping delivery sounded like Marvin Gaye's constipated younger brother in the throes of an asthma attack. But on revisiting recently, what a grower! I don't even hear the ridiculous intakes of breath any more, just the desperation that the guy's girl mustn't leave him. Can't stop playing it. And squealing along with him
Dolly13 Posted May 11, 2009 Posted May 11, 2009 Perhaps it was the 'Tunes you dont like ' bit that prompted us to post up tunes we dont like ! Thats what gave it away for us !!!
