Why a spilt in the scene

Have a look at this thread in another 24 hours... :D

Across the board nights with 10 different types of sound would be hard to promote indeed...

Banjos/flares/whistle/crack/speed/pills/poppers/skinheads/mods/disco queens/ shandy drinkers/ two steppers/chin strokers/victor meldrews/ Wigan stompers/ Stafford plodders/ plumbers/ finance managers/ hookers/pimps/ junkies/ creeps/ piss heads/ posers/...

This would be really something to see..Back to the 80s :wicked::shades:

I think all painter and decorators should be locked in the rnb room for the night....

I personaly would hate it in one room.....take middleton for an example, we only go there for the rnb room i could honestly say if the rnb room stopped we would go else where and thats just our opinion, im speaking for gina as well, i think its healthy to see every room doing what they do best, top djs booked, and peeps can venture into any room and hear class everytime regardless of style........ :D

Im an R&B fan , the Mrs is more of a classics fan , I know a lot of folks , they have different tastes, 100mph, mid tempo, modern ,rare ,but it seems these days we never all meet up because of this split..makes no sense to me :D

Bazza

true words bazza we have friends in different camps and we only seem to meet up all together is at a "across the board" venue such as pilsley.i think the only other option is as mentioned before the weekender.

Never been to Middleton, only ever heard good things about it,must make the trip one of these times,Now dont get me wrong if a venue has 2 or 3 rooms of course it makes good sense to play different styles......but most Venues are single room events ,splitting them selves off into one style only do's seems daft to me, I have been known to be wrong tho' :wicked:

The area were we put our free event on seems to work ok. In attendance, we have Soulie who like both rnb and soul, and the Scooterists who like soul, rnb and Jamaican Ska and rock steady.

Everyone gets on and has a good time, that's what its all about, I would say its mostly rnb, sixties soul and a bit of Latin and we play about 10 -15 Ska tracks mixed in our sets for the whole night, I think that's works really well. Plus you have to keep the crowd on the dance floor weather its oldies, underplayed gems, rare ect.

The scene is changing all the time, enjoy it while you can, you only live once.

Pete Griff

We have 3 rooms at middleton simply because we are 3 clubs that work very well together, the main room is probably more across the board than most clubs advertiseing as that you will hear 60s 70s 80s 90s rare c/ups oldies and everything in bettween all in one room the other 2 rooms excell in there particular field.

Now Then!!!!

More mischief

getting vary interesting now :(

Well i don't know how many styles people would class but rare and underplayed i don't call them styles and to me it's oldies (Northern), Modern and R & B (some) that are classed as Northern Soul. I don't expect Disco or ska or ordinary soul music to be played or funk etc. Funk and disco might have a little part ie Curtis Mayfield - Move On Up to me is Funky Northern or Tavares made some disco and it has some Northern sounds but i wouldn't expect this whole funk and Disco to come into it

I don't really always look 2 rooms, i know i like more 60's and early 70's Northern but i wouldn't want to go into a modern room for so long to hear something i might like. I like Messing with my Mind, Crazy World, Love Don't Come No Stronger, Pressure etc but i don't think i would want to go into a modern to hear them. why not in a room of mixed stuff. it's easy for a dj to mix it if they have the tunes

I am a fan of different styles too and would love a bit of each in the same room... The spilt is because every dog got a box of records now and wants to play them.. If they can't get booked at others venues then they just invent a new night... Not sure what the solution is but the split is the sign of our different taste as we get older..

Some folk would never want anything outside the safe zone while others mock many dj playing northern classics...

The trouble with one room for some is that there is no escape from a dj set that they don't like, all djs on these nights would have to play a mix for the whole crowd and that would be a tough job indeed...

The Wigan stomping oldies crowd and the rare/modern crossover crowd in one room is like me singing blues songs at a clan meeting unsure.gif

Five rooms at Prestatyn and still some moaners laugh.gif ... It can only get worse with the Victor Meldrew crowd coming on strong... Just f"ck off and moan some other place and let us get with having a good time..

well ive booked you now theres no backing out now laugh.gif

multi room allniters ar imo the best idea there have been to room allniter for many years normally modern and northern which doesn,t work for me as i don,t realy like much modern .i love rnb and its like breath of freash air having somewhere to go if the main room plays an hour of 70s.as for missing out on tunes being played in the other rooms carn,t work that thinking out if there was only one room youd miss it anyway

this scene has been split for years and a kind of good thing really. When I go to local do's I hear the top 200 tunes played by folk who don't really want to hear much else, to folk who only want to hear these tunes and not much else. They want a nice little disco with sounds that are vaugely familiar have a pint or two and a laugh with their friends from school ect ect....nice and well in their comfort zone.that is fine and dandy and none of my concern.....but in no way shape or form can this be called the SOUL SCENE it's some sort of scene ,but not the soul scene.......the soul scene consists of all nighters and a few soul nights that push the boundaries musically, that people are prepared to get of their arses to travel to,that still have an edge, that are full of night people old and new who can be bothered cause it's in their bones so to speak.....venues that are out of their comfort zone. This is the real soul scene always was always will be.It's what defines a brilliant scene as opposed to just an ok night out, getting tired at 11.30 and going home bored sensless.......imho yes.gifyes.gif

I personally prefer to hear a good mix of all styles in one room....as long as there are a good percentage of fresh or underplayed tunes.

Of course, not everyone will like every tune, or genre for that matter, but nobody will ever enjoy all the tunes played in one main room allnighter anyway so what's the difference.

At least it gives folk a chance of hearing something they may not normally get the chance to hear cus they don't want to wander from the main room, or don't believe they will enjoy anything being played in the R&B/Modern rooms.

I can understand specialised allnighters (ie R&B/Modern etc) catering for those just wanting to hear that specific genre all night, but surely if the music played is of decent enough quality it deserves to be played to a larger audience.

Besides which, certain tunes cross the bounderies anyway, so you still get R&B played in main rooms (ie Ray Agee/Hayes Cotton/Gwen Davis/Lavern Baker etc) and then you get the minority moaning that R&B is being played in the main room when there is another designated R&B room.....not to mention those who would argue Ray Agee and Hayes Cotton et al are Northern records...not R&B records...:thumbsup:

I'm no big fan of Modern, but I'm sure its a similar situation.

Imagine if this split room policy was adopted and strictly adhered to all those years ago...how many great R&B and Modern tracks would have fell by the wayside as they had lacked the exposure of being played by the main room DJs to the larger audience.

A classic example is Rufus Lumley Minneaplis' Minnesota, a record Johnny Beggs started to champion at the Steam allnighters in Crewe, to a very small and limited audience.

Its now a floorpacker for Flanny at Middleton, but could have so easily been overlooked and left in the hands of collectors rather than getting it's deserved spins to a larger audience.

There are plenty of great R&B records that suffer the same fate, and of most other genres as well, cus they get played in add on rooms to limited audiences.

Just my opinion like..... :P

So across the board means what then???? something different to a lot of folks it seems..

Is it just 60s/70s uptempo dancers..

60s/70s stompers/mid tempo/rare underplayed/RnB/ crossover/ disco etc etc etc..

60s/70s/80/90s/y2k.. Dancers /stompers/two steppers/deep soul/ soulful house

Maybe across the board should mean mixing Duffy into late 50s RnB and everything in between from monster oldies to the deepest disco

OOOOOOOOOOOh its a tough one aint it..

Good luck to you all

"No slitting at the back please"

across the board is a catch all for wanna be promoter/dj types of local do's,the reason for this is they attract a very few oldies/comfort zone went to wigan once types and the rest are middle aged locals who go for a late drink or to see if there are any loose council house bints to pull.....you should not worry because these do's are NOT part of the soul scene at all, would you want to go to a great nighter like lifeline, burnley wilton ect ect and see some of these people there sat down waiting for the bingo to start before going home at 11 o'clock coz they're tired.Ithink not good people.........tezzie
