Guest Kevin J Posted March 13, 2008 Posted March 13, 2008 are they less desirable than label presses? are they excluses (aka "unreleased")? thanks. just starting to buy these records, and well ... dont really know much about them outside of knowing what i like. kev
TOAD Posted March 13, 2008 Posted March 13, 2008 BLANKS ARE THE FIRST PRESS OF THE RECORD TO TEST THE MARKET IF THEY WERE GOING TO SELL IT COULD BE AGES TIL THEY PRESSED UP A NORMAL COPY FOR PUBLIC SALE THEY WERE OFTEN SENT TO SOUND MEN TO PLAY OUT AND IM LED TO BELIVE THEY WERE MORE EXPENSIVE TO BUY. SOME ARE DEFINATLY UNRELEASED THERES A FEW THAT COME TO MIND ON UK LABELS

ZapatootheTiger Posted March 15, 2008 Posted March 15, 2008 If they're UK blanks, these were often pressed deliberately to generate interest, rather than to test the market (as JA ones usuallly were)...
Guest Kevin J Posted March 15, 2008 Posted March 15, 2008 all of the blanks that ive aquired over the past weeks are Jamaican. all but one has a record store stamp. ive found most of the A-sides on various comps or just songs that i have heard somewhere before, but not all of the B-sides. im finding that UK releases seem to be a lot more expensive than JA ones. Im guessing that a lot of JA releases never really went out of print? such a different world than soul records.
ZapatootheTiger Posted March 15, 2008 Posted March 15, 2008 (edited) You could post the matrix numbers of some of these - that would help others (who have a copy of Roots Knotty Roots/RKR - I don't) identify. Soundclips also help and are more enjoyable than dry old matrix numbers This place has a section that may be able to help... https://s7.invisionfree.com/PAMA_FORUM/index.php Edited March 15, 2008 by ZapatootheTiger
michael-j Posted March 17, 2008 Posted March 17, 2008 (edited) just think of them like the 'white labels' in dance music. many house/jungle/whatever tracks never made it past white label - pressed up as promos, no royalties etc (not that Jamaican stuff had percentage contracts), but sold via shops. loads of big hits also seem to almost always be on blank - 'Carry Go Bring Come' for example, which sold thousands and thousands - presume that they didn't bother with a label for quick sellers and not to be confused with stuff that's had the label scrubbed off to hide the title and artist Edited March 17, 2008 by michael-j
ZapatootheTiger Posted March 18, 2008 Posted March 18, 2008 ...and of course, a white label (or blank) was cheaper to produce than labels with 2- or 3-colour artwork, so "official" releases may also have had nothing on the label, other than hand-written info...
